Ⅱ. Reading Comprehension(40 points)

There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each of the passage there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer.

Passage One

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.

College brings together people from all works of life. There are so many different types of people in the world but if you go to a college campus, you are sure to find at least one of every kind. The great part about being here with so many different people is that you get to interact with some interesting characters and see how to deal with them. You will meet the people you dread the most, the smart-ass, the brain, or the unique spirit, but no matter who it is that is your worst nightmare to be around you will always be paired up with them in a group project. When you get into the real world you are not going to be able to pick your boss or coworkers. Interacting with these people in college living with different roommates will help you to learn how to cooperate with the people in life you find so unpleasant. College life is fun. The fact that I have been here for a short time just means it has not yet been a life changing experience to me. If I were to give any tips on how to survive, it would not be how to survive life. I would have to say that one should be outgoing and live life to the fullest. Meet new people whenever you can because they just may be a major influence in your life. Also, get your work done before you go out and party. Lastly, I would have to say, in life if you ever feel lost or alone, talk to someone about it. Everyone gets depressed at times in their life and there is always someone who will listen to your problems.

21. What is the theme of the passage?

A. Relationships in college.

B. Homework in college.

C. Freedom in college.

D. Partying in college.

22. What dose the author say about group projects?

A. They are always unpleasant.

B. They are always difficult.

C. Partners may not cooperate.

D. partners may be lazy.

23. Why does the author recommend meeting many new people?

A. They may become your best friends.

B. They may influence your life.

C. They may help you someday.

D. They make your life more fun.

24. How would you describe the author’s personality?

A. Shy and underconfident.

B. Strong but quite.

C. Extremely pessimistic.

D. Optimistic and outgoing.

25. What does the author say to do if you’re depressed?

A. Go somewhere by yourself.

B. Talk to someone about it.

C. Try to forget about it.

D. See a psychologist immediately.

Passage Two

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

During the 19th century, scientists found that when certain parts of a person’s brain were injured, he would lose the power to do certain things. And so, people thought that each part of the brain does.

In the past fifty years there has been a great increase in the amount of research on the brain. Scientists have found out that the way brain works is not so simple as people in general may think. Chemists tell us that about 100,000 chemical changes take place in the brain every second. Some recent researches also suggest that we can remember everything that happens to us. We may not be able to think of the things we have heard and seen, but it is all kept there in the storehouse of the human mind.

Earlier scientists thought that the power of one’s brain got weaker and weaker as one grew older. But it is now thought that that’s not true. As long as the brain is given plenty of exercise, it keeps its power. It has been proved that an old person who has always been active in the mind has a quicker mind than a young person who has only done physical work without using much of his brain.

26. In the last century, scientists found that a person would lose the power to

do certain things_________.

A.when he had drunk too much

B.if certain parts of his brain were hurt

C.after he did a quite different job

D.if he had been greatly frightened

27.Scientists today are still unable to show exactly_________.

A. how many chemical changes take place in the brain each second

B. whether each part of the brain does the same work

C.what each part of the brain is called

D.which part of the brain is the most important

28.It has been found that the brain usually works_______.

A. in a fairy complicated(复杂) way

B. a little any rest all day long

C.without any rest all day long

D.in a very simple way

29.Which of the following is not true?

A. Scientists are working hard to resolve the mysteries of the brain.

B.As many as six million changes take place in the brain every minute.

C. A young man doing physical labor is sure to have a much slower mind.

D.Even an old man may have a quick mind only if his brain is given

much exercise.

30.The more work our brains have, _________.

A. the less result we will gain

B. the more tired they will feel

C. the weaker their power will get

D. the more work they are able to do

Passage Three

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:

A normal conversation between strangers involves more than talk. It also involves the dynamics of space interaction. If one person gets too close, the other person will back up. If the first person invades the other’s space again, the other will back up again. The person who finds himself or herself backing up is trying to increase the distance of the comfort zone. The person closing in is trying to decrease that distance. Most likely neither person is fully aware of what is going on.

In the 1960s American anthropologist Edward T. Hall was a pioneer in the study of human behavioral use of space. His field of study became known as proxemics. Hall said that personal space for Americans can be defined as having four distinct zones: the intimate zone within 18 inches of your body for whispering and embracing; personal zone of 18 inches to four feet, for talking with close friends; social zone of four to 10 feet, for talking with acquaintances; and the social zone of 10 to 25 feet, for talking to strangers or to a group.

Historians say that our standards of personal space began with the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century. In cities such as London and New

York, people of different social and economic classes were suddenly crammed together, so they unconsciously developed a commonly understood rule of polite behavior and space to restrict the area around them.

People exhibit nonverbal messages of discomfort when their zones are violated. Invaded people might pull at their hair, become rigid, or even become angry. As Hall noted in his work, a comfortable conversation needs to include the range of human personal space.

31. This passage is not mostly about_________.

A. what nonverbal communication is

B. human conversation

C. the life of Edward T. Hall

D. human behavioral use of space

32. Edward T. Hall identified________

A. talks between strangers

B. angry people

C .four zones of personal space D. the Industrial Revolution

33. If you and a close friend began talking when you were eight feet apart, you

will probably soon______

A. move closer together

B. move farther apart from each other

C. begin talking softly

D. ask another friend to join the conversation

34. The third paragraph provides______

A. historical view on personal space

B. an economic reason for personal space

C. an overview of Edward T. Hall’s field of study

D. a definition of personal space

35. The word “dynamics” (line 1, paragraph 1) means_______

A. difficulties

B. forces or influence that cause change

C. largeness

D. explosions so large that they are beyond belief

高级英语6 Paraphase-期末考试 复习答案

Unit 2 The Fine Art of Putting Things Off Michael Demarest 1"Never put off till tomorrow," exhorted Lord Chesterfield in 1749, "what you can do today." That the elegant earl never got around to marrying his son's mother and had a bad habit of keeping worthies like Dr. Johnson cooling their heels for hours in an anteroom attests to the fact that even the most well-intentioned men have been postponers ever. Quintus Fabius Maximus, one of the great Roman generals, was dubbed "Cunctator " (Delayer) for putting off battle until the last possible vinum break. Moses pleaded a speech defect to rationalize his reluctance to deliver Jehovah's edicts to Pharaoh. Hamlet, of course, raised procrastination to an art form. 2The world is probably about evenly divided between delayers and do-it-nowers. There are those who prepare their income taxes in February, prepay mortgages and serve precisely planned dinners at an ungodly 6:30 . The other half dine happily on leftovers at 9 or 10, misplace bills and file for an extension of the income tax deadline. They seldom pay credit-card bills until the apocalyptic voice of Diners threatens doom from Denver. They postpone, as Faustian encounters, visits to barbershop, dentist or doctor. 3Yet for all the trouble procrastination may incur, delay can often inspire and revive a creative soul. Jean Kerr, author of many successful novels and plays, says that she reads every soup-can and jamjar label in her kitchen before settling down to her typewriter. Many a writer focuses on almost anything but his task—for example, on the Coast and Geodetic Survey of Maine's Frenchman Bay and Bar Harbor, stimulating his imagination with names like Googins Ledge, Blunts Pond, Hio Hill and Burnt Porcupine, Long Porcupine, Sheep Porcupine and Bald Porcupine islands. 4From Cunctator's day until this century, the art of postponement had been virtually a monopoly of the military ("Hurry up and wait"), diplomacy and the law. In former times, a British proconsul faced with a native uprising could comfortably ruminate about the situation with Singapore Sling in hand. Blessedly, he had no nattering Telex to order in machine guns and fresh troops. A U.S. general as late as World War II could agree with his enemy counterpart to take a sporting day off, loot the villagers' chickens and wine and go back to battle a day later. Lawyers are among the world's most addicted postponers. According to Frank Nathan, a nonpost-poning Beverly Hills insurance salesman, "The number of attorneys who die without a will is amazing." 5Even where there is no will, there is a way. There is a difference, of course, between chronic procrastination and purposeful postponement, particularly in the higher echelons of business. Corporate dynamics encourage the caution that breeds delay, says Richard Manderbach, Bank of America group vice president. He notes that speedy action can be embarrassing or extremely costly. The data explosion fortifies those seeking excuses for inaction—another report to be read, another authority to be consulted. "There is always," says Manderbach, "a delicate edge between having enough information and too much." 6His point is well taken. Bureaucratization, which flourished amid the growing burdens of government and the greater complexity of society, was designed to smother policymakers in blankets of legalism, compromise and reappraisal—and thereby prevent hasty decisions from being made. The centralization of government that led to Watergate has spread to economic institutions and beyond, making procrastination a worldwide way of life. Many languages are studded with phrases that refer to putting things off—from the Spanish ma?ana to the Arabic bukra fil mishmish(literally "tomorrow in apricots," more loosely "leave it for the soft spring weather when the apricots are blooming"). 7Academe also takes high honors in procrastination. Bernard Sklar, a University of Southern California sociologist who churns out three to five pages of writing a day, admits that "many of my friends go through agonies when they face a blank page. There are all sorts of rationalizations: the pressure of teaching, responsibilities at home, checking out the latest book, looking up another footnote." 8Psychologists maintain that the most assiduous procrastinators are women, though many psychologists are (at $50-plus an hour) pretty good delayers themselves. Dr. Ralph Greenson, a professor of clinical psychiatry (and Marilyn Monroe's onetime shrink), takes a fairly gentle view of procrastination. "To many people," he says, "doing something, confronting, is the moment of truth. All frightened people will then avoid the moment of truth entirely, or evade or postpone it until the last possible moment." To Georgia State Psychologist Joen Pagan, however, procrastination may be a kind of subliminal way of sorting the important from the trivial. "When I drag my feet, there's usually some reason," says Fagan. "I feel it, but I don't yet know the real reason." 9In fact, there is a long and honorable history of procrastination to suggest that many ideas and decisions may well improve if postponed. It is something of a truism that to put off making a decision is itself a
