Unit2(翻译)

l wilderness –an unsettled, uncultivatedregion left in its natural condition 荒野(地)

l thaw –melt

l eave – projecting overhang at lower edge 屋檐

l trade – give in exchange for sth. else

l trap –catch inor as if in a trap

l pack –fold, roll or combine into a bundle

l strap –fasten orsecure with a strap

l quiver – shake with fast, tremulous movement

1.Pa said he must go to town to trade thefurs of the wild animals he had been trapping all winter.

The word trade often used as a noun. But here trade is a verb, means to buy and sell goods. There are many such conversions in English.

e.g. verbs converted from nouns

Ma said that Laura might come with her while she milked the cow,Laura could carry the lantern.

SoLaura put on her coat and Ma buttoned it up.

n 2.Ma was worried, but Pa said that by starting before sun-up and walkingvery fast all day he could get home again before dark.

n Sun-up is an American expression forsunrise. Note that sometimes American English and British English havedifferent words for the same thing.

3. Its sides were of tin, with places cutin them for the candle-light to shine through.

Thepreposition of here means made from.

e.g. The dress is of silk.

The crown is of gold.

4. The woods were dark, but therewas a gray light on the snowy path, and in the sky there were a few faintstars.

l Note that the word woods isdifferent word from its singular form, wood. Woods means a place trees growthickly, smaller than a forest. In English, some nouns will carry on newmeanings when they are used in their plural forms.

5. "But he could have hurt us, couldn't he?" she asked.

Note that the question is put in its subjunctive mood. From the contextwe know that Ma's consoling remarks make Laura feels better. When she asks thisquestion, she knows well that the bear will not hurt them because they haveprotections. So what she really implies is that without those protections, the

bear will have hurt them.

1. “But we have to read and learn all theseLatin writers. I want to read modern writers, and English writers, like GeoffreyChaucer. Can you read?”

不过我们得学习那些拉丁作家,读他们的作品。我想读当代的、尤其是英国作家的作品。比如杰弗里·乔叟。你识字吗?

Unit5(翻译)

●Twenty Minutes’ Reading on P18-21 ●Translate the following passage into Chinese Trading error dims Everbright's prospects The record 523 million yuan ($85 million) fine may seem big, but Everbright Securities Co's troubles are far from over. The company is facing claims estimated at 2.7 billion yuan by investors alleged to have been misled by the company's deliberate withholding of information about its 7.2 billion yuan trading mistake. But lawyers said potential claimants may need more information from the China Securities Regulatory Commission investigation to pin Everbright down. According to the Securities Law of China, the principal should shoulder responsibility if insider trading incurs any losses. But Liu Mingjun, director of the capital market department of Beijing Celue Law Firm, told Xinhua News Agency that there is a lack of detailed interpretation and regulations in the Securities Law. In the United States, investors who can prove they suffered a loss as a result of insider trading would bring a civil claim against the broker responsible for it, said Gene Buttrill, capital markets practice partner at the global law firm Jones Day. So far, the commission has only handed down the penalty with a note saying that investors who felt cheated can seek redress through litigation. It has not disclosed details of its investigation that showed how Everbright stonewalled the stock exchange on Aug 16, allowing itself time to engage in insider trading to cover its potential losses. Following Everbright's former president Xu Haoming's resignation on Aug 22, Yang Chizhong, assistant executive, and Mei Jian, secretary of the board of directors, resigned on Saturday. Xu and Yang, together with Shen Shiguang, general manager of the accounting department, and Yang Jianbo, general manager of the strategic department, were fined by the commission and banned from any work involving the stock exchange. Buttrill of Jones Day said insider trading cases in the US carry both criminal and civil penalties. "For serious cases, jail sentences are often appropriate," he added. The share price of Everbright Securities plummeted 8.54 percent to close at 9.21 yuan on Monday, while the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index

大学英语3 期中考试答案

Unit 1 Education: A Transformation of the Soul 1On my first day of high school, my teacher showed the class a Power Point presentation entitled The Value of Education. The first slide read simply this: ―Education = $‖. I felt uncomfortable, not knowing exactly why. 2 Education, throughout my high school experience, continued to be described to me like this: college means a diploma. A diploma means a better job. A better job means more money. More money means a good life. But I wondered who had decided the criteria for a ―better‖ job and a ―good‖ life. It all seemed so mathematical. Education was presented to me as an equation equaling a person I had not chosen to be. 重点单词的句子翻译: 1.她读了一首题为《想起你》的诗。(entitle) 2.他给这本书取名为《野性的爱》。(entitle) 3.教育的关键在于激励和享受,而不是一所学校或一个大学文凭。(diploma) 4.那青年用了3 年的时间取得研究生文凭。(diploma) 5.我自己成功的标准是能够努力工作和快乐生活。(criteria) 3 I went on to college, of course, as everyone told me to do. College is how you become an earner, they told me. My major that first semester was International Relations. I liked the woman I envisioned myself as in this field – a diplomat, a savvy citizen of the world. But gradually I began to realize that this person was not someone I bore any resemblance to. She was, rather, a clone of the well-educated, well-moneyed ideal my teacher had presented to me years ago. This woman had earning potential; she was smart and worldly. But she was not someone I would become. She had nothing I really wanted.

大学英语期末考试写作必背范文

Is It Better to Buy or Rent? The price of housing has kept increasing in recent years, which causes a big headache for people living in cities. A lot of people cannot afford to own a real estate property, so they choose to rent instead of buying an apartment. This group of people does not want to bear burden of mortgage so that they opt for a practical solution. Renting an apartment makes them have a place to stay and thus they can focus on work as well as personal life. Some other people, however, believe that an apartment owned by themselves makes them feel safe and relieved, so they are willing to sacrifice some other aspects of life to borrow money from the bank to buy an apartment. As far as I am concerned, to buy or to rent is all about it will be better to rent first and wait for the good timing when the price is going down to buy. Topic 2: On Job Hopping It seems that nowadays, very few young people are willing to stay in a job position for long, let alone for the whole life. They change jobs constantly. This results from several factors. Firstly, young people like fresh things, and it is easy for them to be fed up with old routine work. So when they stay in a position for a while, the excitement will fade out. They are quite realistic and not willing to waste time in a job they are not interested in. Thirdly, some young people are not satisfied with current salary, believing they deserve better pay. In my opinion, constant job hopping will not benefit young people in their career development. Every job has its own merits and young people can certainly learn something from it as long as they are patient and wise enough. Every job experience is valuable down the career path and young people shall be able to make the most of it. Topic 3: Online Social Network Modern people will be no stranger to online social network. Facebook, Renren and Kaixin001 are probably the most populous networks among Chinese netizen. In these networks, people interact with each other, be it a stranger or a friend, and have a lot of fun in the virtual world. This phenomenon could be a result of the fast development of the Internet and people's great interest of the virtual world. I think it is a very good new platform for people to keep in touch. But it should not be overused. Firstly, some people are addicted to it, which makes them want to get online 24 hours a day. When people spend too much time on one thing, they will naturally have not enough time for study and for work. Secondly, online social network change people's behavior of interacting with others. In virtual world, you just click the mouse and type in words instead of having a face-to-face talk. This will not benefit people's long term friendship, and even harm their interpersonal relationships in real world.
