Part III Reading Comprehension

In this age of equality, sameness between the sexes is emphasized as if differences have to mean problems. Well, differences can mean problems. but only when they are not properly understood.

Imagine Adam alone in the Garden of Eden and you will have an idea about the way many men feel today. If the major issue for women is overload in their life----balancing career, relationships, children, home ---- the crisis for men is loneliness and the loss of women. Twenty-five years ago, most men came home from work to a warm meal, a clean house, the devotion of a gentle wife. Now the majority of women work outside, they are no longer the full-time housewives as before, so men are feeling deserted and easily hurt.

Women get emotional support through a network of friends and family. Most men don't have such relationships; they are intimate only with their wives or lovers. As a result, any lessening of their partner’s attention may be thought of as rejection or abandonment.

Bob's wife Sandy has a full-time job, and he really prefers her bringing home extra income. Yet he also feels uneasy and troubled. "When I get home at the end of the day, wanting to have a talk with Sandy,'' he said, "She puts me of. First she makes dinner, then the kids need something, or a friend calls her. She talks with her sister, her girlfriends, her workmates, but not with me. I sometimes do feel abandoned and annoyed."

Since most men have difficulty admitting loneliness and hurt, they tend to become angry instead. Bob's constant complaints and criticism made Sandy confused and irritated. Eventually, they came up with a simple solution that met both Bob’s need for time and Sandy's sense of responsibility to others. The first half-hour af ter arrived home from work was “theirs”, they would sit together and just talk to each other about everything they want to say.

Passage Two

Many people have the experience that getting up in the morning is so difficult and painful. This might be called laziness. But Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation to this, he has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labor through your work, you may say that you're feeling “hot”. T hat’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologue as: "Get up, Tom! You'll be late for school again!'' The possible explanation to the trouble is that Tom is at his temperature and energy peak in the evening.

Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has. You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help a lot. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway, counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. However, if your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point.

Get off to slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.

55. According the passage, what might bring family quarrels to the end?

C) Being aware of energy cycles of other family members.

D) Trying to control the energy cycles of other member

56. If one wants to do better at his low point in the morning, he should_________.

A) change his energy cycle B) go to bed earlier the day before

C) try to overcome his laziness D) get up earlier than usual

57. What does the sentence “get off to slow start which saves your energy” mean?

A) It will help you to control your temper early in the day.

B) It will enable you to concentrate on your routine work.

C) It will help to keep your energy for the whole day’ s work.

D) It will keep your energy cycle under control all day.

58. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A) Dr Klriman explains why people reach their peak at different hours of day.

B ) Habit can help people adjust to their own energy cycle.

C) Each person has his own energy cycle.

D) Getting up with a slow start helps us to save energy for work.

Passage Three

A person with a flat, dull voice which neither rises nor falls sounds like a flat and dull person. But he or she may not be! While we can’t deny the fact that people can give the impressi on that they are bored, anxious friendly or angry just by the sound of their voice.

A French friend of mine once said to me. " Your accent in French is excellent but you will never sound like a Frenchman until you put all your heart into your voice. It is a pity because you are a lively person and yet you don’t sound lively to a Frenchman!"

We learn the grammar and vocabulary and even the correct pronunciation of the foreign language, but we may forget the important emotional effect of the music of our speech. For British people, the intonation of language is attractive. That's to say, the rise and fall in the sound of our voice when we speak really matters. It's unfortunate that the intonation of some other countries can often communicate the wrong meaning.

British people sometimes feel offended because they think the other person is unfriendly even if he has spoken a perfect English sentence! And this failure of communication can also happen between British people themselves.

If you want to communicate successfully with another person, you may have to think about the music of your own voice. Especially when you meet someone from a different part of your country or from another country, you should be careful! Don’t judge them only by their intonation.

59. What does the writer want to show through the example in the second paragraph?

A) To learn a foreign language well, we must learn the sound and pronunciation well

B) Grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation are not the only important elements in learning a foreign language.

C) A person with a flat, dull voice will not give other good impression.

D) In learning a foreign language, we must talk to the native speakers frequently.

60. The word "music" in the third paragraph means___________.

A) intonation B) rising tone

C) sweet voice D) falling tone

61. British people sometimes feel offended while talking with others because .

A) they can’t understand what the other person says

B) the other person says something rude

C) the languages they speak are quite different

D) they misunderstand the other person's words

62. What is the main idea of the passage?

A) To communication with others successfully, we must know music well.

B) We can't simply judge a person by his voice, nor can we neglect the intonation.

C) Many listeners will not pay attention to the sound of one's voice.

D) It's not easy for people from different countries or parts to communicate.

The servants were up very late on the Saturday evening, getting everything ready for the next day, and while they were busy they saw the glow (暗淡的光) of a fire start in the sky. By 3 o'clock on the Sunday morning, the glow had become so bright that one of the servants, Jane, woke her master to see it. Pepys went to the window to watch it. It seemed fairly far away, so after a time he went back to bed. When he got up in the morning, it looked as though the fire was dying down, though he could still see some flames. So he set to work to tidy his room and put his things back where he wanted them after the servants had cleaned everything. While he was doing this, Jane came in to say that she had heard that the fire was a bad one: three hundred houses had been burned down in the night and the fire was still burning. Pepys went out to see for himself. He went to the Tower of London and climbed up on a high part of the building so that he could see what was happening. From there, Pepys could see that it was, indeed, a bad fire and that even the houses on London Bridge were burning. Someone told him that the fire had started in a

World of the Future Scientists think that wonderful things may come true in the future. Future means a time that is not yet here. It can be a short time from now or a long time from now. Some of the underwater wonders are almost ready to come true now. Others won't come tree, we think, until a long time from now. Some, of course, may never come true--but who knows for sure? They may. What are some of the wonders that may come true in the future? A world underground The green utopia (an ideally perfect place) underground is going to help us regain a more harmonious relationship between the often opposing sides of large-scale development and our ecosystem. The city may be called Alice City, from Alice's Adventure in the Wonderland, which offers a wonderful world that is almost as fantastical as that was described in the book. A large clear dome (圆顶), within an area of open parkland, leads into a multi-leveled structured metropolis of underground offices, housing, transportation and public areas. There will be everything to make the city as self-sufficient as possible including shopping malls, theatres and sports complexes in addition to facilities (contained in a separate structure) for power generation, heating and waste recycling. Apart from offering an almost limitless space for development, such underground development has many more attractive ecological advantages over traditional forms of housing. It is less disturbing than high rise development and therefore favorable in environmentally sensitive areas. Land above the complex can be set aside for parkland and recreational use. In towns or cities where pollution levels are high, air can be filtered through air pipes in the roof of an underground housing or industrial complex. A world underwater At the docks you step into a shiny metal submarine that is shaped like a shark. The door is closed behind you, and powerful engine starts to push. Down slides the submarine--like a shark diving. Deeper and deeper under the water. Soon all sunlight is gone. The headlights of the diving ship are turned on. Then, six miles below, you come to the sea bottom. From the diving submarine, you change to tiny jet boat and ride along close to the bottom of the ocean, almost as you would skim over the land in an air-plane. As you travel, you have fun looking out the window at the sights on the bottom of the ocean. You see strange fish and underwater mountains, cliffs, and valleys. But more than that--hotels and mining camps and farms and factories! A world in space Let's go back to dry land and take a future journey the other way-up instead of down. Huge rocket liners take you into space to visit the Moon Camp. You walk around on the moon in a special moon suit. You visit an observatory where a giant telescope looks far into space--farther than anyone has ever been able to see from Earth. You go deep down into one of the moon mines. After you have visited the moon, you visit the Mars Colony and the Venus Exploration Outpost. A new world on the Earth Let's go back to Earth. In the far, far future, girls--and boys, too--may be playing with dolls that look like the people of the planets visited by our spacemen. To control or run all kinds of toys, boys and girls may learn to use special computers --machines that answer questions and do arithmetic faster than you can blink. Bicycles and perhaps skates may be run by jet power, and a new thing to ride may be a small flying saucer. Imagine a race between them! There may be telepathy (心灵感应) helmets that send thought waves from your brain to that of your friend miles away. You just think a thought and your friend knows it! You can have secrets with each other that nobody else can turn in on! Robots There will be other surprises in the future. How would you like to have a robot playmate? Having robot playmates may not be-so much fun as it seems. But maybe a boy with a wrench (扳手) and a screwdriver can fix the robot so that it won't be too perfect! Food What about the food of the future? Scientists think that much of it will be artificial --made in factories from such surprising things as coal, limestone, air, and water. You don't think that ice-cream or cake or candy or even bread and potatoes made out of these things will taste very good? You may be wrong. These artificial things will be blended so skillfully by food chemists that the food of the future probably will be delicious. It probably will also be healthful because all the things that you need to live a long and healthy life will be put into it. A longer life Scientists of the future will almost certainly find other ways to make life last longer. They probably will find cures for most diseases. Hospitals will probably have "body banks" that can give you almost any new part you need to keep on living. People of the future may live to be a lot older than 100 years. TV Are you wondering whether there'll be television in the future? There'll almost certainly be wonderful programs. Television screens probably will be large and flat, hanging on the wall or going across the four walls of a room. People on the screen will look as real as if they were right in the room with you. Highways What about highways of the future? Well, a very small child probably will be able to drive a car. Nobody will need to steer. Electric signals will hold each car on the right road to get wherever the "driver" wants to go. And it probably will be impossible for cars to smash together. Controls that won't even have to be touched will make all speeding cars miss each other or will put on the brakes. Driving by car will be as safe as being at home. Weather control But maybe the most wonderful surprise in the future will be weather control. Cities may have giant plastic domes over them to keep out snow, rain, or storms.
