B Year of Giving

Yesterday I started the Year of Giving, my first day of a year-long journey into eploring the act of giving and the meaning of charity. I chose December 15 as the starting date, which mared three years since my mother died from heart disease. She was one of the most generous people that I have ever nown. She always thought of others first and certainly serves as an inspiration to me.

I had a rather busy day yesterday, ironic (具有讽刺意义的) for someone who is unemployed right now. In the morning I went to the gym, and unsuccessfully got the phone call from the unemployment office for some job searching. Before I new it, it was noon. I grabbed a quic lunch and rushed down to a meeting. On my way to Connecticut, I wondered if I would see someone that I would feel forced to give my first $ 10 to. I was running late and decided to do it afterwards.

After the meeting I had about half an hour to find the first person of my Year of Giving! I decided to chec out DuPont Circle. I had met a guy there named Jerry once and thought he would willingly accept my $ 10. He wasn’t there, but I did see a man sitting by himself who looed really lonely, so I approached h im. Now I had to figure out what I was going to say, I thin I said something lie, “Hi, can I sit down here?” “I would lie to now if I could give you $ 10?” He ased me to repeat what I had said, I did, then he looed at me

funny, got up and left.

I then started waling south where I spotted a man standing by the bus stop on Connecticut Ave. He

appeared to be in his 60s. I don’t now what drew me to him, but I thought I would mae my second attempt. I was a bit nervous and ased him which bus came by that stop. Then I eplained that I was starting

a year-long project to give $ 10 to someone every day and that I wanted to give my $ 10 for today to him.

The gentleman, I later found out that his name was Ed, responded without hesitation that he could not accept my offer and that there were many people more deserving the money than him. This was eactly one of the things that I hoped would happen. People would thin of others before themselves.

In 1924, Harvard sent Joseph Francis Roc on a treasure hunt through China’s southwestern provinces—the Wild West of their day. But gold and silver weren’t his tas Roc, a distinguished botanist, sought only to fill his bags with all the seeds, saplings, and shrubs he could find. Botany, though, was just one of Roc’s strengths. His hand-drawn map of his travels through China’s “Cho-Ni” territory, in the Harvard Map Collection, includes more than a thousand rivers, towns, and mountains indicated in both English and Chinese, and was so well made that the U.S. government used it to plan aerial missions in World War II.

Scientist, linguist, cartographer, photographer, writer—Roc was not a wallflower in any sense. Arrogant and self-possessed, he would wal into a village or warlord’s place “as if he owned the place,” said Lisa Pearson, the Arboretum’s head librarian.

In declaring his successful return under the headline “Seeing Strange Flowers, in the Far Reaches of the World,” the Boston Evening Transcript ran a large photo of the daring eplorer wearing in a woolly coat and fo-sin hat. “In discussing his heroism including hair-raising escapes from death either from mountain slides, snow slides and robber armies, he waves the idea away as if it is of no importance.”

The Arboretum and Roc parted ways after 1927, mainly because his trip cost Harvard a fortune—about $900,000 in today’s dollars. Fortunately, many of his specimens, many of his amaing photos, and his great stories remain.

2021届高三下学期二月份月考试卷 英语试卷 (含答案)

2021届高三下学期二月份月考试卷 英语试卷 一、 We smile because we are happy, and we frown because we are sad.Recent studies suggest that our emotions are driven by their related facial expressions. This February psychologists at the University of Cardiff in Wales found that people whose ability to frown is lessened by botox injections(肉毒杆菌注射)are happier,on average, than people who can frown. The researchers administered an anxiety and depression questionnaire to 25females,half of whom had received botox injections to stop frowning. The botox injected people reported feeling happier and less anxious in general. In a related study from March, scientists at the Technical University of Munich found that the botox subjects had much lower activity in the brain circuits(回路)involved in emotional processing and responses—in the amygdala, hypothalamus and other parts of the brain—as compared with controls who had not received treatment. The concept works the opposite way, too.People who frown during an unpleasant procedure report feeling more pain than those who do not, according to a study published in May2008in the Journal of Pain.Researchers applied heat to the forearms of29participants,who were asked to either make unhappy, neutral or relaxed faces during the procedure. Those who exhibited negative expressions reported being in more pain than the other two groups. No one yet knows why our facial expressions influence our emotions as they seem to.The associations in our mind between how we feel and how we react may be so strong that our expressions simply end up strengthen our emotions—there may be no evolutionary reason for the connection. 1.What can we know about the result of the study from Paragraph2? A.The ability to frown should be stopped by injection. B.Less frowns make people happier. C.Women love to frown and feel sad. D.Half women have no ability to feel happy. 2.What did scientists do in the related studies?

2019届上海市各高中名校高三英语题型分类专题汇编--阅读理解B篇--老师版(带答案已校对珍藏版)

III. Reading Comprehension Section B Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. B Kettlebells do not hurt people. People do. A kettlebell will get your respect – the easy way or the hard way. Here is the easy way. 1. Get a medical clearance. Get clearance, especially from an orthopedist and a cardiologist. The latter is no joking matter, since kettlebell training can be extremely intense. 2. Always be aware of your surroundings. Find a training area with a non-slippery surface on which you are not afraid to drop a kettlebell. The area must be clear of objects you might trip over – including other kettlebells – or that you might hit with a kettlebell. There should be no people or animals in a radius where you could injure them. 3. Train barefoot or wear shoes with a flat, thin sole and room for the toes to spread. Training barefoot is superior for health and performance reasons. If you must wear shoes, wear Converse Chuck Taylors, Vibram Five Fingers, or similar shoes that have thin soles and do not pinch the toes together. You have sensory receptors on the bottoms of your feet that make you stronger and improve balance and coordination. Wearing traditional shoes diminishes the ability of these receptors to work properly, and therefore inhibits performance and can increase the risk of injury. Go native. 4. Never contest for space with a kettlebell. Do not try to save a rep that has gone wrong. Guide the kettlebell to fall harmlessly, and move out of the way if necessary. And remember, quick feet are happy feet. 5. Practice all safety measures at all times. Respect every kettlebell, even the lightest one. Always use perfect form picking up and setting down a kettlebell. The set is not over until the bell is safely parked.
