武汉大学考博英语模拟真题及其解析Text l

A wise man once said that the only thing necessary for the triumph

of evil is for good men to do nothing. So,as a police officer,I have

some urgent things to say to good people.

Day after day my men and I struggle to hold back a tidal wave of

crime.Something has gone terribly wrong with our once-proud American

way of life.It has happened in the area of values.A key ingredient

is disappearing,and I think I know what it is:accountability.

Accountability isn’t hard to define. It means that every person

is responsible for his or her actions and liable for their Geng duo

Of the many values that hold civilization together--honesty,

kindness, and so on--accountability may be the most important of

all.Without it,there can be no respect,no trust,no law--and,

ultimately,no society.

My job as a police officer is to impose accountability on people

who refuse,or have never learned,to impose it on themselves. But

as every policeman knows, external controls on people’s behavior are

far less effective than internal restraints such as guilt, shame and

embarrassment.

Fortunately there are still communities--smaller towns, usually

--where schools maintain discipline and where parents hold up standards that proclaim:“In this family certain things are not tolerated--they simply are not done!”

Yet more and more, especially in our larger cities and suburbs, these inner restraints are loosening.Your typical robber has none. He considers your property his property;he takes what he wants, including your life if you enrage him.

The main cause of this break-down is a radical shift in attitudes. Thirty years ago,if a crime was committed, society was considered the victim. Now,in a shocking reversal,it’s the criminal who is considered victimized:by his underprivileged upbringing,by the school that didn’t teach him to read,by the church that failed to reach him with moral guidance,by the parents who didn’t provide a stable home.

I don’t believe it.Many others in equally disadvantaged circumstances choose not to engage in criminal activities. If we free the criminal, even partly, from accountability,we become a society of endless excuses where no one accepts responsibility for anything.

We in America desperately need more people who believe that the person who commits a crime is the one responsible for it.

[C]it’s only natural for virtue to defeat evil(B)

[D]it’s desirable for good men to keep away from evil

The period of adolescence,i.e.,the period between childhood and adulthood, may be long or short, depending on social expectations and on society’s definition as to what constitutes maturity and adulthood. In primitive societies adolescence is frequently a relatively short period of time, while in industrial societies with patterns of prolonged education coupled with laws against child labor, the period of adolescence is much longer and may include most of the second decade of one’s life.Furthermore, the length of the adolescent period and the definition of adulthood status may change in a given society as social and economic conditions change.Examples of this type of change are the disappearance of the frontier in the latter part of the nineteenth century in the United States, and more universally, the industrialization of an agricultural society.

In modern society, ceremonies for adolescence have lost their formal recognition and symbolic significance and there no longer is agreement as to what constitutes initiation ceremonies.Social ones have been replaced by a sequence of steps that lead to increased recognition and social status. For example, grade school graduation, high school graduation and college graduation constitute such a

sequence, and while each step implies certain behavioral changes and social recognition, the significance of each depends on the

socio-economic status and the educational ambition of the individual. Ceremonies for adolescence have also been replaced by legal definitions of status roles, right, privileges and responsibilities. It is during the nine years from the twelfth birthday to the twenty-first that the protective and restrictive aspects of childhood and minor status are removed and adult privileges and responsibilities are granted. The twelve-year-old is no longer considered a child and has to pay full fare for train, airplane, theater and movie tickets.Basically, the individual at this age loses childhood privileges without gaining significant adult rights. At the age of sixteen the adolescent is granted certain adult rights which increases his social status by providing him with more freedom and choices. He now can obtain a driver’s license;he can leave public schools;and he can work without the restrictions of child labor laws. At the age of eighteen the law provides adult responsibilities as well as rights;the young man can now be a soldier, but he also can marry without parental permission. At the age of twenty-one the individual obtains his full legal rights as an adult. He now can vote,he can buy liquor,he can enter into financial contracts, and he is entitled to run for public office. No additional basic rights are acquired as a function of age after majority status has been attained.None of these legal provisions determine at what point adulthood has been

reached but they do point to the prolonged period of adolescence.

36.The period of adolescence is much longer in industrial societies because________.

[A]the definition of maturity has changed

[B]the industrialized society is more developed

[C]more education is provided and laws against child labor are made(C)

[D]ceremonies for adolescence have lost their formal recognition and symbolic significance

37.Former social ceremonies that used to mark adolescence have given place to________.

[A]graduations from schools and colleges

[B]social recognition

[C]socio-economic status(A)

[D]certain behavioral changes

38.No one can expect to fully enjoy the adulthood privileges until he is________.

[A]eleven years old

[B]sixteen years old

[C]twenty-one years old(C)

[D]between twelve and twenty-one years old

39.Starting from22,________.

[A]one will obtain more basic rights

[B]the older one becomes, the more basic rights he will have

[C]one won’t get more basic rights than when he is21(C)

[D]one will enjoy more rights granted by society

40.According to the passage,it is true that________.

[A]in the late19th century in the United States the dividing line between adolescence and adulthood no longer existed

[B]no one can marry without the permission of his parents until the age of twenty-one

[C]one is considered to have reached adulthood when he has a driver’s license(A)

[D]one is not free from the restrictions of child labor laws until he can join the army

Most growing plants contain much more water than all other materials combined.C.R.Darnes has suggested that it is as proper to term the plant a water structure as to call a house composed mainly of brick--a brick building.Certain it is that all essential processes of plant growth and development occur in water. The mineral elements from the soil that are usable by the plant must be dissolved in the soil solution before they can be taken into the root. They are carried to all parts of the growing plant and are built into essential plant materials while in a dissolved state. The carbon dioxide from the air may enter the leaf as a gas but is dissolved in water in the leaf before it is combined with a part of the water to form simple sugars--the base material from which the plant body is mainly built.

Actively growing plant parts are generally75to90percent water. Structural parts of plants, such as woody stems no longer actively growing, may have much less water than growing tissues.

The actual amount of water in the plant at any one time, however, is only a very small part of what passes through it during its development. The processes of photosynthesis,by which carbon dioxide and water are combined--in the presence of chlorophyll(叶绿素)and with energy derived from light--to form sugars, require that carbon dioxide from the air enter the plant. This occurs mainly in the leaves. The leaf surface is not solid but contains great numbers of minute openings, through which the carbon dioxide enters. The same structure that permits the one gas to enter the leaf, however, permits another gas--water vapor--to be lost from it.Since carbon dioxide is present in the air only in trace quantities(3to4parts in10,000 parts of air)and water vapor is near saturation in the air spaces within the leaf(at80F,saturated air would contain about186parts of water vapor in10,000parts of air),the total amount of water vapor lost is many times the carbon dioxide intake.Actually, because of wind and other factors, the loss of water in proportion to carbon dioxide intake may be even greater than the relative concentrations of the two gases. Also, not all of the carbon dioxide that enters the leaf is synthesized into carbohydrates(碳水化合物).

41.A growing plant needs water for all of the following except ________.

[A]forming sugars

[B]sustaining woody stems

[C]keeping green(D)

[D]producing carbon dioxide

42.The essential function of photosynthesis in terms of plant needs is________.

[A]to form sugars

[B]to derive energy from light

[C]to preserve water(A)

[D]to combine carbon dioxide with water

43.The second paragraph uses facts to develop the essential idea that________.

[A]a plant efficiently utilizes most of the water it absorbs

[B]carbon dioxide is the essential substance needed for plant development

[C]a plant needs more water than is found in its composition(C)

[D]the stronger the wind, the more the water vapor loss

44.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

[A]The mineral elements will not be absorbed by the plant unless they are dissolved in its root.

[B]The woody stems contain more water than the leaves.

[C]Air existing around the leaf is found to be saturated.(D)

[D]Only part of the carbon dioxide in the plants is synthesized.

45.This passage is mainly about________.

[A]the functions of carbon dioxide and water

[B]the role of water in a growing plant

[C]the process of simple sugar formation(B)

[D]the synthesis of water with carbon dioxide

武汉大学 2017年攻读博士学位研究生外语综合水平考试试题 (满分值100分) 科目名称:英语科目代码:1101 注意:所有的答题内容必须写在答案纸上,凡写在试题或草稿纸上的一律无效。 Part I Reading Comprehension (2’×20 = 40 points) Directions:In this part of the test, there will be 5 passages for you to read. Each passage is followed by 4 questions or unfinished statements, and each question or unfinished statement is followed by four choices marked A, B, C and D. You are to decide on the best choice by blackening the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET. Passage One Mr Gordon is right that the second industrial revolution involved never-to-be-repeated changes. But that does not mean that driverless cars count for nothing. Messrs Erixon and Weigel are also right to worry about the West’s dismal recent record in producing new companies. But many old firms are not run by bureaucrats and have reinvented themselves many times over: General Electric must be on at least its ninth life. And the impact of giant new firms born in the past 20 years such as Uber, Google and Facebook should not be underestimated: they have all the Schumpeterian characteristics the authors admire. On the pessimists’ side the strongest argument relies not on closely watching corporate and investor behavior but rather on macro-level statistics on productivity. The figures from recent years are truly dismal. Karim Foda, of the Brookings Institution, calculates that labor productivity in the rich world is growing at its slowest rate since 1950. Total factor productivity (which tries to measure innovation) has grown at just 0.1% in advanced economies since 2004, well below its historical average. Optimists have two retorts. The first is that there must be something wrong with the figures. One possibility is that they fail to count the huge consumer surplus given away free of charge on the internet. But this is unconvincing. The official figures may well be understating the impact of the internet revolution, just as they downplayed the impact of electricity and cars in the past, but they are not understating it enough to explain the recent decline in productivity growth. Another, second line of argument that the productivity revolution has only just begun is more persuasive. Over the past decade many IT companies may have focused on things that were more “fun than fundamental” in Paul Krugman’s phrase. But Silicon Valley’s best companies are certainly focusing on things that change the material world.

哈工大考博英语真题及答案

General English Admission Test For Non-English Major Ph.D. program (Harbin Institute of Technology) Passage One Questions 1-7 are based on the following passage: According to a recent theory, Archean-age gold-quartz vein systems were formed over two billion years ago from magmatic fluids that originated from molten granitelike bodies deep beneath the surface of the Earth. This theory is contrary to the widely held view that the systems were deposited from metamorphic fluids, that is, from fluids that formed during the dehydration of wet sedimentary rocks. The recently developed theory has considerable practical importance. Most of the gold deposits discovered during the original gold rushes were exposed at the Earth’s surface and were found because the y had shed trails of alluvial gold that were easily traced by simple prospecting methods. Although these same methods still leas to an occasional discovery, most deposits not yet discovered have gone undetected because they are buried and have no surface expression. The challenge in exploration is therefore to unravel the subsurface geology of an area and pinpoint the position of buried minerals. Methods widely used today include analysis of aerial images that yield a broad geological overview, geophysical techniques that provide data on the magnetic, electrical, and mineralogical properties of the rocks being investigated, and sensitive chemical tests that are able to detect : the subtle chemical halos that often envelop mineralization. However, none of these high-technology methods are of any value if the sites to which they are applied have never mineralized, and to maximize the chances of discovery the explorer must therefore pay particular attention to selecting the ground formations most likely to be mineralized. Such ground selection relies to varying degrees on conceptual models, which take into account theoretical studies of relevant factors. These models are constructed primarily from empirical observations of known mineral deposits and from theories of ore-forming processes. The explorer uses the models to identify those geological features that are critical to the formation of the mineralization being modeled, and then tries to select areas for exploration that exhibit as many of the critical features as possible. 1. The author is primarily concerned with . A. advocating a return to an older methodology. B. explaining the importance of a recent theory. C. enumerating differences between two widely used methods D. describing events leading to a discovery 2. According to passage, the widely held view of Archean-age gold-quartz vein

Each passage is followed by 4 questions or unfinished statements, and each question or unfinished statement is followed by four choices marked A, B, C and D. You are to decide on the best choice by blackening the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET. Passage One Justice in society must include both a fair trial to the accused and the selection of an appropriate punishment for those proven guilty. Because justice is regarded as one form of equality, we find in its earlier expressions the idea of a punishment equal to the crime. Recorded in the Old Testament is the expression “an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.”That is, the individual who has done wrong has committed an offence against society. T o make up for his offence, society must get even. This can be done only by doing an equal injury to him. This conception of retributive justice is reflected in many parts of the legal documents and procedures of modern times. It is illustrated when we demand the death penalty for a person who had committed murder. This philosophy of punishment was supported by the German idealist Hegel. He believed that society owed it to the criminal to give a punishment equal to the crime he had committed. The criminal had by his own actions denied his true self and it is necessary to do something that will counteract

For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET by blackening the corresponding letter in the brackets. Questions 1 to 4 are based on the following passage: Auctions are public sales of goods, conducted by an officially approved auctioneer. He asks the crowd assembled in the auction-room to make offers, or "bids", for the various items on sale. He encourages buyers to bid higher figures and finally names the highest bidder as the buyer of the goods. This is called "knocking down" the goods, for the bidding ends when the auctioneer bangs a small hammer on a table at which he stands. This is often set on a raised platform called a rostrum. (definition)→ what The ancient Romans probably invented sales by auction, and the English word comes from the Latin Autcio, meaning "increase". The Romans usually sold in this way the spoils taken in war; these sales were called sub hasta, meaning "under the spear", a spear being stuck in the ground as a signal for a crowd to gather. In England in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, goods were often sold "by the candle": a short candle was lit by the auctioneer, and bids could be made while it stayed alight.(history)→ how Practically all goods whose qualities vary are sold by auction. Among these are coffee, hides, skins, wool, tea, cocoa, furs, spices, fruit and vegetables and wines. Auction sales are also usual for land and property, antique furniture, pictures, rare books, old china and similar works of art. Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: We are told that the mass media are the greatest organs for enlightenment that the world has yet seen; that in Britain, for instance, several million people see each issue of the current affairs program, Panorama. It is true that never in human history were so many people so often and so much exposed to many intimations about societies, forms of life, attitudes other than those which obtain in their local societies. This kind of exposure may well be a point of departure for acquiring certain important intellectual and imaginative qualities; width of judgment, a sense of the variety of possible attitudes. Yet in itself such exposure does not bring intellectual or imaginative development. It is no more than the masses of stone which lie around in a quarry(采石场)and which may, conceivably, go to the making of a cathedral. The mass media cannot build the cathedral, and their way of showing the stones does not always prompt others to build. For the stones are presented within a self-contained and self-sufficient world in which, it is implied,
