Abstract: As the saying goes, what a kind of person say what a kind of words. From the words someone say, a clear character can appear in front of others. Many literatures also use this way to set up a character, which is not unfamiliar with us. From these peculiar and individual characters’languages, a specific impression has left.On one hand,it based on the charming of language itself.On the other hand,the Thunderstorm is a kind of drama, as we all know, language is the foundation to constitute drama,which can depict a character of role.The peculiar words make roles more lively and visual.Owing to so complicate roles’relationship in Thunderstorm , this passage will analysis main roles from the view of peculiar language.

1.Introduction

If anyone mentions to the Chinese drama, ones will talk about Cao Yu’s Thunderstorm without appointing, which is a masterpiece in Chinese literature history. The characters which modeled by Cao Yu have left a deep impression on Chinese heart, so do I. Having searched all kinds of studies of Thunderstorm, i prepare to discuss the peculiarity of character’s language. Because there is fewer points on this subject. But i think the particular languages have an important position on a successful work.

2.A brief presentation of peculiarity of characters’ language

2.1 A brief introduction of peculiarity

The basic factor of drama is language. The author often builds all kinds of characters through depicting and describing. Therefor, a good work could

not ignore the impotence of character’s language. Actually, the character’s

language is the role’s language in drama, which can express suitable

character and identity of the role. Making a brief conclusion, what a kind of

people say what kind of words, and ones are able to recognize the person

who is just through his or her words. At the same time, the readers have a

good understand of the imply meanings of roles by characters’unique

language.

2.2 The importance of characters’ language

The characters’language, a main way to build and show the characters’personality for roles, is various words speak by characters in

drama. This kind of words are from daily life but also with great difference.

In daily life,in order to finish their purpose and mental task, people regard

words as a manner to express thoughts and emotions. And in drama, the

writer also needs literal languages to convey thoughts, set characters, show

relationship between roles, and reveal complicate characters’ inward world.

Drama, a special form in literal world, most of words are dialogues. So ,the

characters’ language is obviously impotent for different roles.

2.3 The relationship between peculiarity and characters’ language

The peculiarity, a kind of unique character, has a special position on characters’language. In other words, the characters’language puts more abundant meanings to peculiarity. In drama, different roles get disparate words in order to show strong stage effect. Getting together with peculiarity, the characters’language tries to reach a standard of successful masterpiece of drama in literal world.

3.The main roles of Cao Yu’s Thunderstorm

The book of Thunderstorm is a famous stage drama. It describes about eight person from two families with different characters. The relationship among them is very complicated. Zhou Puyuan, 55, is a chairman of the board of directors of a coal-mining company. His wife who called Zhou Fanyi is younger than him 20 years old. He has two sons. one is Zhou Ping, 28, who was born by his former wife--Lu Shiping. The other is Zhou Chong, 17, born by his present wife. His servant, Lu Shiping’s husband--Lu Gui. Lu Dahai, 27, Lu Shiping’s son of former marriage. Lu Sifeng, 18, Lu Gui’s daughter, is a maid at the Zhous’. With such a complex relationship, they all show different characters which can learn from their words.

4. The specification of characters’ peculiar language

4.1 The language of Zhou Puyuan

蘩:(望望周朴园,又望望周萍,拿起药又放下)不!我喝不下!

朴:萍儿,劝你母亲喝下去。

萍:爸!我—

朴:去,跪下,劝你的母亲。

萍:(走到蘩漪前,向周朴园,求恕地)爸爸!

朴:(高声)跪下!

周萍望着蘩漪,蘩漪泪痕满面。周冲起得发抖。

朴:叫你跪下!

Zhou: ping, persuade your mother to take it.

Ping: but father, i —

Zhou: go on! Down on your knees and persuade her!

Zhou:(shouting) down on your knees!

Zhou: down on your knees, i said!

Form zhou’s four simple sentences, we can see that he would like to force someone to do something that others dislike. The chinese words are full of strength, and the translation also keep this style. Using the most simple words to express what is called power. These words make a full feature of Zhou Puyuan.

朴:话很多。我看你的性情好像没有大改,——鲁贵像是个很不老实的人。

Zhou: on the contrary, you do not seem to have altered much in temperature—lu gui strike me as being rather a shifty character.

Usually, Chinese words express meanings implicitly. It does not mean lu gui is not honest. Owing to zhou puyuan knows that lu gui has heard anything bad he does, but he can not say it clearly. He is selfness and tricky. The translation which uses wonderful words is also suitable to his social position and character.

4.2 The language of Lu Gui

贵:(咳嗽起来)他妈的!(兴奋地问着)你们想,你们哪一个对得起我?(向四风同大海)你们不要不愿听,你们哪一个不是我辛辛苦苦养到大?可是现在你们哪一件事儿做的对得起我?(对大海)你说?(对四凤)你说?(对着站在中间圆桌旁的鲁妈)你也说说,这都是你

的好孩子啊!

Lu(coughing): god almighty!(heatedly) just look at you. There is not one of you can look me in the face!(turning to dahai and sifeng) it is no good you pretending not to hear, either, i have worked my fingers to the bone to bring you two up, both of you, but what have either of you ever done to show your gratitude?(to dahai) eh?(to sifeng) answer me that!(to lu ma, who is standing by the round table in the center.)or perhaps you can tell me, seeing that they are your precious children?

These words show lu gui’s complain. He often teases the weak, but afraid the powerful. During the process of translation, the translator uses different words to show different attitudes. From this, we can see that lu gui is really a shifty man. He knows how to get well along with various people.

4.3 The language of Zhou Fanyi

蘩:我不是!我不是!自从我把我的性命,名誉交给你,我什么都不顾了。我不是他的母亲,不是,不是,我也不是周朴园的妻子。

Fan: no, i am not. Ever since i placed my life and my reputation in your hands. I have shut myself off from everything else. No, i am not his mother, no more than zhou puyuan’s wife.

In that time, fanyi is a brave woman. Even though her behavior could not accept by everyone, i admire her. In order to pursuit her true love, she can do what she likes. Form these words, i can feel her pain. The translation words do not pay much attention on sentence pattern, but transmit the same emotion, arise the same feelings in others, and leave a deep impression on ones’ heart.

5. Conclusion

5.1 The functions of characters’ language in drama

“Language is the body of drama.”The most important thing is the dialogue of characters’language in drama. Regardless of the thesis of works, the background of times, or the character of roles, all of them should be convey to readers by the dialogue of characters’ language. As a masterpiece, the Thunderstorm have given full expression of characters’language. Various roles set a clear figure through their words. Moreover, the characters’language in drama not only modeled such many distinct characters, but also declared an attitude of life. It is not just abut a complicate image, which gives readers a chance to experience the essence of life through a small stage. To some extent, this is the true meaning of drama.

5.2 The advantage of peculiarity in modeling roles

The drama work has its’ own peculiarity. To convey the thesis of drama, author should tries his best to describe proper roles’dialogue. So, the characters’language have to possess peculiarity. The basic standard for drama is modeled vivid characters. And the peculiarity of language is a part of it. Without knowing the roles’character, readers can image it from their words.

A successful character could not leave the peculiarity which belongs to. Sometimes, even though the name of character has been forgot, the peculiarity of words would never. At the thought of this kind of roles, one would know which types of language of peculiarity belongs to. In one word, the peculiarity has an inseparable effect on modeling roles.

The Study of Speech Sounds in Language I. Introduction Knowledge of a language includes that of the different components of the language: the morphemes,words,phrases,and sentences. It also includes knowing what sounds are in the language and how these sounds are put together to form meaningful units. Different terms can be found in describing the sound system of language. Traditional terminology puts phonetics and phonology at a paralleled level. In this terminology, phonetics is the study of separate speech sounds, while phonology is concerned with the system of combination of sounds. According to the terminology in some books, however, the study of speech sounds in a general way is termed as phonology. It is concerned with all the aspects of the speech sounds and sound systems of a language. Its subdivisions are phonemics. Phonetics deals with speech sounds in isolation, and phonemics studies the systems of speech sounds. To avoid confusion, the traditional terminology is adopted in this book. II. Analysis on ---- 2.1. Analysis of speech sounds The study of phonic medium of language in isolation is the level of phonetics, attempting to describes all the sounds that occur in human language. It’s mainly concerned with the production, transmission, and perception of the speech sounds. Analysis of speech sounds can be approached from the following 4 levels Level 1: anatomy and physiology----refers to speech organs and their functions Level 2: articulatory phonetics----studies how to produce speech sounds. Level 3: auditory phonetics---studies how the sounds are perceived by the hearer. Abstract Euphemism, cosmetic words, is not only a lingual phenomenon, but also a cultural and social phenomenon. It is like a mirror, reflecting the values, aesthetic conceptions and moral concepts in some extent. Euphemism plays an important part in social communication. It is like lube that avoids hurting the other party’s feeling. It oils the human relationship in communication and helps to save face of communicators. If people make full use of euphemism, it can accelerate and facilitate human communication. This paper elaborates on the features and social functions of euphemism. And it focuses on the relationships between its polite functions and Politeness Principle. This thesis is composed of six parts with Chapter Four and Five as its core: The first chapter focuses on the origin and definitions of euphemism. The second chapter discusses the features of euphemism in many ways. The third chapter talks about the social functions of euphemism from the angle of pragmatics. The fourth chapter forms the basis of the whole research by connecting euphemism with politeness and face-saving theory. The fifth chapter centers on euphemism and Politeness Principle. The last chapter concludes the whole thesis. Appropriate use of English euphemism can contribute a lot to successful message exchange.
