Teaching Is “One of the Least Popular Jobs in the UK”

The UK government has just published a report on the future of secondary school teaching, and the conclusion of the report is that many secondary schools now face great difficulties in finding people who want to be teachers. Since the 1980s, the number of graduates who would “seriously consider” teaching as a career has fallen sharply, from 64% in 1982 to just 17% today. The report suggests that urgent action needs to be taken in order to encourage more intelligent young graduates into teaching.①

The main drawback①①①①of secondary teaching, according to the report, is the low salary. Earnings in teaching are much lower than in many other jobs. Joanne Manners, 24, is a good example: “I graduated in maths last year, and I was thinking of doing a teacher-training course to become a maths teacher---but I saw I could earn twice as much if I worked in marketing or advertising, so I decided not to become a teacher.”①

It's not just about the money, however. The survey concluded that another reason why people don’t want to be teachers is that some teenagers behave very badly in school. A lot of schools have problems with discipline, and it seems clear that children do not have the same respect for teachers as in the past.① Here’s the view of Dave Hallam, an accountant from London: “I think parents are to blame. They should have stricter rules with their children at

home and also teach their children to have more respect for teachers.”①

The report is clear that the problem of teacher shortage is a very serious one. It says that the government should raise teachers’ pay significantly, to catch up with workers in other professions. It also indicates that the government could launch a nationwide publicity campaign, with some advertisements on TV and in the newspapers, to show the positive sides of teaching to young people.⑤

As is reported, secondary schools in UK experienced difficulties recruiting young teachers. The reasons are low salary and kid’s bad behaviors. Also, government should increase teachers’ income and promote a teaching campaign to display teaching’s bright side.(55words).

The advantages of social networking

Why do most people sign up to social networking sites? ①The main reason is to stay in touch with other people. These sites also help people to find their childhood friends that they have lost touch with. Renewing these long-lost friendships is just a click away. It is very exciting to be able to catch up with friends and keep up with their news on an almost daily basis thanks to frequent updates.①

Keep up-to-date,however,doesn’t have to be restricted to friends and acquaintances(相识的

人).What many people tend to forget is that they can also use networking sites for professional reasons. It is actually a great way of finding out about upcoming job opportunities. Friends might know about job vacancies that may not be advertised elsewhere or they can even recommend their friends for certain jobs. Even people already employed can promote their business online. This is particularly important for artists, actors and musicians who can create pages devoted to their band or theatre company, and inform fans about their gigs(现场演唱会)or latest exhibitions. In addition, the sites can be used to allow the public to give instant feedback on the artists’ work and to interact with their favourite artist.①

Another great advantage of social networking sites is how easy it is to organise an event with your friends. Thanks to different settings people can organise their friends by different criteria(标准). These criteria could be how close friends they are, common interests and hobbies or where they live. This means if a certain event takes place, for example, an open-air concert or a football match, all they have to do is invite the right group of friends to attend. Some networking sites offer a range of quizzes and games, so friends living on opposite sides of the globe can invite each other to participate and compete in a variety of games without leaving their homes.①

Meet The Member Who Quit Sugar

When I was 15, I weighed 100 kg.

I was a size 20+ and hated the way I looked. I was a serial big eater and quite depressed. I would sit in front of the fridge, eat something, move to the cupboard, eat a packet of chips, and move back to the fridge.

It was a heartbreaking cycle of hate and food. I didn’t feel confident, pretty, or worthwhile.

Shopping made me cry, I avoided mirrors, and my social life came to an end. I actually lost friends because they told me I was antisocial. It became so bad that I wanted to abuse myself; my skin and my mind became my enemy.

But then, I turned my life around. I quit sugar.

It started with my mum. She staged an intervention(干预) that made me cry. I wanted to change - I needed to change - and she could see how unhappy I was.

She put me onto a diet that mostly aimed to schedule meals, and - to my shock horror - cut out all processed sugar. It was so hard at first. I remember the shame of sneaking chocolate and candies when the three o’clock hunger hits.

But the weeks kept coming and it just got easier. I stopped eating sugar, and I stopped loving it; simple as that.

I substituted chips and biscuits for fruit and nuts, and had cup-of-soups after school when I was hit by the desire. I also had more energy, having a 20-minute walk with my dog into my everyday routine; I began to love that personal time.

Cutting out sugar gave me so much more control over my body, and my outlook on life improved. So many people are intimidated by the words “quit sugar”. It’s not true. Fruit, honey, et cetera are natural sugars, and believe me, they fuel you better than chocolate bars ever could.

Now I’m 17, turning 18, and I weigh 70 kg. I still struggle with my weight, but this is where I sit naturally, and I am very proud of myself. I never thought I would be confident enough to wear dresses or skirts, and take leadership roles to put myself out there and develop my social skills.

I could never have done it without the support of my friends and family, and I urge everyone who wants to do right by themselves and change their diet - quitting sugar or otherwise - to share their decision with people. Develop a support network, online or offline, which can offer you advice or pick you up when you’re down. And I can assure you, from my own personal experience, your body will thank you, and you will thank yourself too.

Step 4:概括。

After experiencing a lot of heartbreaking moments due to her overweight, the author made up her mind to go diet by quitting sugar. She turned to her mother and healthy food. After struggling with her weight and sugar-eating habit, now she has lost 30 kg and feels much better than ever before. Her experience is to take action and support.

Shyness

If you suffer shyness, you are not alone. It is not surprising that social scientists are exploring its environmental causes.

The first environmental cause of shyness many be a child’s home and family life. Today’s children are growing up in smaller and smaller families, with fewer and fewer relatives living nearby. Growing up in homes in which both parents work full time, children may not have the socializing experience of frequent visits by neighbours and friends. Because of their lack of social skills, they may begin to feel shy when they start school.

A second environmental cause of shyness in an individual may be one’s culture. In a large study conducted in Japan, 57 percent of participants rated themselves as shy. Researchers Lynne Henderson and Philip Zimbardo say, “One explanation is that in Japan, an individual’s performance success is credited externally to parents, grandparents, teachers, coaches, and others, while failure is entirely blamed on the person.” Therefore, Japanese learn not to take risks in public and rely instead on group-shared decisions.

Technology may also pay a role. In the United States, the number of young people who report being shy has risen from 40 percent to 50 percent in recent years. Due to our huge advances in technology, watching television, playing video games, and surfing the Web have replaced recreational activities that involve social interaction for many young people. Adults, too, are becoming isolated as a result of technology. Face to face interaction with bank clerks, gas station attendants are no longer necessary because people can use machines to do their banking, fill their their gas tanks, and order goods. In short, they become shy.

It appears that most people have experienced shyness at some time in their lives. Therefore, if you are shy, you have lots of company.

Shyness is common and it has environmental causes, including home and family life, culture and technology. Firstly, with smaller families and working parents, children lack social interactions. Secondly, blaming failure on individuals causes people in some culture to be shy in public. Finally, with the development of technology, people have fewer opportunities to socialize in person.

Learning by Rote in the Digital Age

Rote learning had become seen as an outdated method of teaching. The dictionary defines learning ‘by rote’ as: ‘from memory, without thought of the meaning; in a mechanical way’.

The decline of rote learning has been quickened by technology. No one needs to memorize friends’ phone numbers or email addresses because such data is conveniently stored and accessible electronically. And why remember when and where World War①broke out when you can find the answer on the internet in about six seconds? But now there are voices for a need to return to rote learning.

In fact, memorizing key data is essential to learning any skill. Doctoring requires knowledge of medicine and lawyering requires knowledge of cases and laws. Of course, being able to recall things will not further your understanding of those things, but without memorizing these

foundation elements, you cannot progress to a deeper understanding of a subject.

While the internet and computers have weakened the need for us to remember things, it may well be that mobile learning can help bring this style of learning back to life by making it more convenient and more fun.

Drilling yourself——with flashcards or by repetition——is usually hard and boring work, which is why most people need their multiplication tables to be drilled into them by teachers or parents. Rote learning without a willing third party can be a battle of discipline and motivation. But mobile learning can make those flashcards and drills more appropriate to individual study; our digital devices can challenge and inform us at the same time and also keeps motivated, whether through game-like structures or recording our progress.

Once you’ve required the essentials of a subject by rote learning you will find it easier to go deeper in the application of knowledge which is important.

Rote learning means mechanical memorization. Although technology makes it less needed, its value is being rediscovered. Rote learning helps people acquire basic knowledge, laying a foundation for further understanding. In fact, technology makes mobile learning possible, which motivates learners in rote learning and makes memorization more interesting and individualized.

To Laugh Is Human

Most of us don’t know why we laugh at some jokes and not at others. Scientists know that we are able to laugh at birth. Babies begin to laugh at three to four months of age, well before they produce their first words. What scientists are interested in is why we laugh.

Scientists believe humans laugh with others primarily because it makes us feel connected with one another, which in turn gives us a sense of trust and comfort. To scientists, laughter is an unconscious reaction; consequently, when we laugh, others can be certain that it is an honest reaction, and honesty is key when building and maintaining friendships.

Since laughter is seen as a social signal that we send to others, it can also help explain why it is so infectious. Studies have proven that when people see or hear something funny, they are 20 times more likely to laugh when they are with others than when they are alone. Wanting to be accepted by others is part of human nature. And mirroring other people’s laughter is a way to signal to others that you feel the way they do, which makes us feel more connected with one another.

Humans have not always laughed just so they can feel closer to others, however. Scientists

point out that this social function of laughter was born out of an even more fundamental human need. Laughter, they believe, came about because it contributed to our very survival as a species. Scientists assume that sharing laughter ensured our ancestors a higher survival rate because it led to greater cooperation between individuals. Humans learned quickly that greater cooperation led to survival, and the brain in turn realized that laughing with others increased out chances of finding people to cooperate, hunt, eat, live, and eventually, survive with.

Scientists think humans are born with the ability to laugh, but why do we laugh? We laugh to feel closer to one another. Laughter helps us to be recognized so we laugh more in groups than when alone. Laughter also evolved from a more basic need to survive as it promoted cooperation, enabling humans to survive better. (59w)

Stress for a teenager is as real a problem as stress for an adult. Therefore, it’simportant to understand the causes of stress in teenagers.

When parents change their jobs or if the family decides to move to a differentplace, the child has to change schools, find new friends, adapt to the new socialcircle and fit into new groups. It is always difficult for children to adapt to suchchanges, which can be a serious cause of stress in

their life.

Academic difficulties, such as inability to understand a certain subject cancause stress. Not every child has the ability to understand every subject. Somekids need extra help besides school work to grasp a few concepts. Poor academicperformance is often laughed at and is looked down upon by both teachers andpeers. In such cases, it can make the child feel isolated, neglected and hurt. All ofthis, put together, can add to stress, which many times worsens grades.

Extracurricular (课外的)activities such as playing a sport, or attendingart classes can weigh heavily on your child’s mind. Balancing school andextracurricular activities does seem like a burden when you have to be outstandingat both. When the pressures from both ends get unmanageable, teenagers tend toget tired and annoyed. Tiredness sets in, leading to stress related issues such as lackof concentration in school.

These are the common causes of stress in teenagers, which can be noticedthrough signs such as poor memory, anxiety, negative and pessimistic attitude. Ifthe signs of teenage stress go unrecognized for a long time, it can make the childemotionally out of balance. And next step, if this happens, it is necessary for parentsto know how to deal with stress.

作文:

Steve Jobs once concluded his speech with the sentence “Stay Hungry, Stay foolish.” It means we should have an inquiring mind and hold a modest attitude towards knowledge. The saying carries much importance in this changing world because it is the precondition of innovation and it is innovation that propels the development of our society.

Numerous stories in the real business world illustrate this point. Koda and Nokia used to lead the photography and mobile phone industries. However, they lagged behind the digital trend because they stuck to the old-fashioned products and lost their alertness to the keen competition in the market. By comparison, under the leadership of Steve Jobs, Apple marched ahead with its tireless pursuit of better technology. It has brought about numerous technological breakthroughs in

handy gadgets and keeps its lead in the market.

From where I am standing, this saying also reminds common people of the importance of modesty. When we stay hungry for knowledge, we regard taking in new information as a joyful matter. The acquisition of knowledge helps to broaden out horizons. When we stay foolish, we can detect the shortcomings in ourselves and know better about ourselves.

“Stay Hungry, Stay foolish” is the legacy Steve Jobs left to this world. We should maintain an attitude of modesty and always be ready to embrace everything innovative and revolutionary, thus keeping up with the times.

高中英语牛津上海版高中三年级第一学期判断推理类阅读巩固提升练习(二)(有答案)

判断推理类阅读巩固提升练习(二) Passage 1 In today's fast paced, high stress world people are working longer hours than ever, and often exhaust themselves at. Day's end in front, of the television to relax enough to begin again in the morning. However, television watching, for most people, does not really lower stress. Studies show that TV viewing more than an hour or so actually creates stress and, especially in women, may lead to the blues. Most individuals are unaware that doing some exercise after work makes them more energetic since it increases energy levels. Wise use of free time does not mean getting an advanced degree, although the mental encouragement gained through education is unbeatable in keeping your mind active. Learning new things nearly always adds a spark to your daily life, especially if it is a favorite topic, such as sport, fashion, or art. Also, look through your bookstore or library to find books on your interests. Try to replace a half hour TV watching with reading. It is reported that in the United States recently, many individuals have as few as two good friends. Long work hours and car commute act to separate people from each other. This separation is deadly. Find ways to meet people at the end of the day and on weekends. Often this can be best done by combining activities, such as by joining a walking group to get both exercise and companionship. Taking a class will lift your spirits and allow you to meet others with similar interests. Hobbies are great for reducing stress and provide another opportunity for social interaction. Using your free time to aid your health may include these elements and many more, such as going to concerts and spending time with family. Overall, the key is to spend less free time being passive. The best ways to use free time are to be mentally and physically active, spend some time outdoors, and interact with other people on a regular basis. 1.What can we learn from the passage? A.Watching television may cause women to feel depressed. B.Finding interests and hobbies in common means taking a class. C.Going to concerts is the best way to make you mentally active.

高中英语牛津上海版高中三年级第一学期阅读理解-议论文类阅读巩固练习(有答案)

阅读理解-议论文类阅读巩固练习 Passage 1 Texas — US President George W Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin failed to bridge their differences over a key arms control treaty last week, but that didn't stop them from backslapping as they ended a summit. The two leaders also offered differing interpretations of the fate of nuclear warheads to be removed from missiles under arms reductions they each announced last week. Bush said he intended to destroy the warheads, but Putin said their fate should be negotiated. The two men untied on the need for Northern Alliance forces—to allow for a broad based government that respects all parties there. Bush and Putin had spent the night at Bush's ranch. Despite the rain, the rural environment and friendly company appeared to have worked its magic. They slapped on the back and joked, at one point teasing each other about whether it is better to visit Texas in the heat of August or Siberia in winter. Analysts say the dramatic warming in US-Russian relation could herald an era of pragmatism in global affairs as the two old rivals finally end decades of hostility and become friends. "Washington and Moscow are no longer playing the 'big game' against each other, but with each other," said Karl Heniz Kamp, an analyst at the Konrad Adenanaer Foundation, a German think tank. 1.It can be concluded that President Bush and President Putin . A.didn't agree on key arms control treaty B.offered different explanations of the future of nuclear warheads under arms reductions C.neither A or B D.bothAandB 2.The reason why the two men joined together is that. A.they were needed by the Northern Alliance forces B.they had taken the advice given by Karl Heniz Kamp, an analyst of German think tank. C.they had already been partners D.they had no different opinions on everything

Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (C) Robert F. Kennedy once said that a country’s GDP measures “everything except that which makes life worthwhile.” With Britain voting to leave the European Union, and GDP already predicted to slow as a result, it is now a timely moment to assess what he was referring to. The question of GDP and its usefulness has annoyed policymakers for over half a century. Many argue that it is a faulty concept. It measures things that do not matter and misses things that do. By most recent measures, the UK’s GDP has been the envy of the Western world, with record low unemployment and high growth figures. If everything was going so well, then why did over 17 million people vote for Brexit, despite the warnings about what it could do to their country’s economic prospects? A recent annual study of countries and their ability to transformed growth into well-being throws some light on that question. Across the 163 countries measured, the UK is one of the poorest performers in ensuring that economic growth is translated into meaningful improvements for its citizens. Rather than just focusing on GDP, over 40 different sets of criteria (标准) from health, education and civil society engagement have been measured to get a more comprehensive assessment of how countries are performing. While all of these countries face their own challenges, there are a number of consistent themes. Yes, there has been a budding (初见端倪的) economic recovery since the 2008 global
