She began looking for someone to ask for help. Just then Richness was passing by in a grand boat. Love asked, “Richness, can I come with you on your boat?” Richness answered, “I’m sorry, but there is a lot of silver and gold on my boat and there would be no room for you anywhere.”

Love then found Knowledge and asked, “Who was it that helped me?” “It was Time,” Knowledge answered. “But why did Time help me when no one else would?” Love asked. Knowledge smiled and with deep wisdom and sincerity , answered, “Because only Time is capable of understanding how great Love is.”

Passage 2

Guns are an unfortunate and dangerous reality in the lives of our children and adolescents(青少年). It is estimated that 44 million Americans own over 190 million guns. Nearly one-half of all homes contain guns, and despite continuing educational efforts, the majority of these guns are kept loaded, unlocked and potentially accessible to children. Research indicates that if a gun is stored in a home, the risk of homicide(杀人)increases threefold and the risk of suicide increases fivefold. Guns also are 43 times more likely to be used to kill a family member or someone known to a family than to kill a stranger.

Children and adolescents have easy access to guns. Over 7% of high school students indicated that they carried a gun in the past month, and it is estimated that approximately one million children bring guns to school each year. Many students who carry guns do so because they are afraid or influenced by peer pressure.

The United States has the highest rates of firearm-related deaths among industrialized countries, including homicide and unintentional deaths; young people are often the victims. Gun violence accounts for over 4,000 deaths and over 12,000 injuries each year among children and adolescents. The rate of

firearm-related homicides for U.S. children younger than 15 years of age is nearly 16 times greater than the rates in 25 other industrialized countries combined.

The most effective measure to prevent firearm-related deaths and injuries to children and adolescents is the removal of guns from homes and communities. This is particularly critical for homes or families in which the threat of personal violence exists. The AACAP also supports all efforts to educate children and the general public about the danger of guns, and the increased risk of accidental injury and death associated with gun ownership.

48.The most effective measure to prevent firearm-related deaths and injuries to children and adolescents is to_____.

A. educate children and general public about the danger of guns

C. encourage the strict enforcement of existing laws about the purchase,

ownership and storage of firearm

Passage 3

With the invention and development of television, entertainment has grown much more visual in character and is demanding less and less use of the imagination, considered by many to be man’s greatest facul ty; but its greatest inadequacy lies in its inability to exercise just those creative powers in men which are called upon and developed in the pursuit of a worthwhile hobby. This lack is not serious while a man is still fully employed in his day-to-day work which itself often gives him opportunities to create either with his hands or with his mind. At this time he seeks only some from of relaxation in his leisure. There comes a time, however, when he must retire from his occupation on account of age, and it is then that these shallower pastimes, useful enough as a form of relaxation, might cease to satisfy the hitherto active man. Today, many elderly people are finding this to be

true, and seem constantly to be suffering from a sense of frustration after retirement, which reveals itself in a short temper and slow degeneration of health, the two most common symptoms.

D.relaxation most suitable for their age

55. It can be inferred from the passage that_________.

A.hobbies are more important to the youth than to the elderly people

B.we should develop worthwhile hobbies when we are young

C.hobbies are not important in the health of modern men

D.in ancient time entertainment was less visual in character

Passage 4

There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external result or product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a promotion, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language----all these are examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.

By contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since by definition it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way. The process is not the road itself, but rather the attitudes and feelings people have, their caution or courage, as they encounter new experiences and unexpected obstacles. In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new

challenges to accept.

In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to confront the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a n ew way of being is essential to our ability to grow. Do we perceive ourselves as quick and curious? If so, then we tend to take more chances and to be more open to unfamiliar experiences. Do we think we’re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of timidity can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and not to take a step until we know the ground is safe. Do we think we’re slow to adapt to change or that we’re not smart enough to cope with a new challenge? Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.

These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we do not confront and overcome these internal fears and doubts, if we protect ourselves too much, then we cease to grow. We became trapped inside a shell of our own making.

Questions:

56.Which of the following is NOT generally believed to achieve personal growth?

A. He has made great efforts in his work.

B. An athlete won the golden medal in Olympic Games.

C. He has given up his smoking habit.

D. A student enrolled in Beijing University.

57.One who views personal growth as a process would________.

A. worry that he is likely to fail

B. be ready to face difficulties and take up challenges

C. see it as a boring and endless road

D. aim high and reach his goal each time

58.In the third paragraph “a new way of being” means___________.

A. a new way of taking risks

B. a new method of perceiving ourselves

C. a new approach to experiencing the world

D. a new system of adaptation to change

59.Which of the following is NOT the author’s advice to the reader?

A. He should try to avoid internal fears and doubts.

B. He should be willing to accept challenges.

C. He should quickly adapt himself to changes.

D. He should be likely to take more chances.

60.According to the passage, what attitude should we take to the process of personal growth?

A. Negative.

B. Neutral.

C. Positive.

D. Indifferent.

Passage 5

Stress can be fantastic. Or it can be fatal. It’s all up to you. Con stant change in the work environment creates opportunities, dangers, and stress. If there were little or no stress in our jobs, they would be boring. However, when there is too much stress, one can be overloaded and become ineffective.

If we have too little stress , we can start new projects to generate some activity increase our stress to an optimal level. When there is too much stress, we can attempt to reduce it, but this is much difficult. The best plan for controlling stress is to learn to control our reaction to stress inducing events. In a real sense, most stress is self-created. While we cannot always control external events generating potentially stressful input, we can learn to control our reactions.

When you accept responsibility for your own life, including your attitude and your level of stress, you learn that even when you can’t change the situation, you can change your reaction to the situation.

“Burnout”(没有劲)is an over-used and over-abused term frequently noted in connection with discussion on stress. Everyone who dislikes his/her job claims to have burnout. Some workers get burnout the first day on the job. Despite the abuse of the term by the free-loaders and goof-offs(游手好闲者),there are real examples of burnout. In brief, burnout exists when the rewards from doing something no longer seem sufficient to justify the effort to do it. It is easy to burnout on boring, repetitive tasks. It requires a real effort not to burnout in this situation. It also occurs when there is no opportunity for creativity and growth in a job. Few workers burnout while they are still growing and developing. They do it when opportunities for growth have been exhausted. The best defense against burnout is the application of the New Age management techniques.

Questions:
