Nowadays, there are many people who don’t know the proper way to love either their friends or family members. They love their friends very much, but they love them in their own ways, or out of their interest. Their love hurt rather than enhance the friendship.

Many people fail to develop their friendship properly for a variety of reasons. Firstly, they are not considerate enough to put themselves in other’s shoes, minding only their own will. Secondly, schools and family education fall short of students’ expectations as knowledge about properly handling interpersonal relationships. Thirdly, as only child in a family, many young adults are reluctant to change in favor of others, expecting friendship to develop as they wished.

As far as I’m concerned, we should improve friendship with others by giving it wings. As the old saying goes, if we love something, we should provide it with a proper environment to grow instead of confining it. As for cultivating friendship, we’re supposed to give it enough room to flourish, keeping a sensible distance from our friends.

It’s an accepted fact that small amounts of alcohol are beneficial to our health, but some scientists claim that one alcohol in particular is better than all the rest.

A western diet of fatty foods is damaging to health, but there’s an interesting phenomenon in the making across the English Channel called the ‘French paradox’. The French eat lots of fatty foods but have very low rates of coronary artery disease. Why is this?

A traditional French diet can be high in fat, yet the French have one of the lowest rates of heart disease in the world. Many researchers put this down to the high consumption of red wine, five times that of the UK. So, what’s special about red wine?

Studies suggest that a certain kind of compounds in red wine may play an active role in limiting the hardening of the arteries which begins when blood vessels being to lose their ability to relax. In short, red wine plays an active role in limiting the hardening of the arteries.

Traditional cardiovascular risk factors, such as smoking and high blood pressure promote this harmful process. Fancy eating a stem cell beef burger, with some genetically modified rice? Perhaps with some specially bred banana that can make you healthier?

It’s not impossible, each has recently been announced by food technologists and scientists working to modify and improve the food we eat.

The burger, grown in the lab rather than grown as part of a living animal, is designed as a way to provide protein-rich meat while avoiding the killing of animals. The banana, a recently published study shows, contains an active compound that helps human cells work more efficiently. While the release of a rice in the Philippines, genetically modified to contain more vitamin A to boost our immune systems and avoid blindness, approaches closer.

Modifying our food isn’t itself new. Since the dawn of agriculture, we’ve bred crops to be larger, sweeter, yield more, or resist disease. But that trend continues with greater urgency. Many of the world’s soils are losing nutrients, and with the rise of monocultures, and loss of fruit and vegetable varieties, our fresh food contains less ‘goodness’ than 50 years ago, some experts say.

Therefore, scientists are looking ways to artificially boost the amount of nutrients in our food, particularly to help feed millions of starved people in developing countries.

A related trend is also emerging; foods in developed countries including the UK are also increasingly being modified and strengthened. But they are marketed and sold to us to boost our health, rather than provide a basic level of nutrition. The hope is that one day such foods might even help to prevent certain kinds of illnesses.

A report in the Lancet last year concluded that improving access to effective mental healthcare could help to alleviate poverty. Mental health was regarded as a “development priority”. But access to that crucial healthcare remains a barrier to many people in poor countries. While in Europe a third of people experiencing mental illness do not receive treatment, in developing countries the situation is much worse.

However, the largest psychiatry campaign to be conducted in the developing world, the Manas intervention, convincingly showed that training lay people can play a crucial role in helping to deliver effective care for depression and anxiety in poor areas.

Community healthcare programmes are not uncommon, and the Manas trial applied similar principles–training people to deliver basic care in their own communities–to mental health.

The campaign was conducted mostly in India, and involved more than 2,700 participants. After community consultation about the programme, local people, mostly women, attended four-week training sessions on helping to manage depression, with an additional two weeks to cover specific disorders such as alcohol abuse. Typically, they are female university graduates, although it is expected that community members with a lower education will be used some day.

On completing training, the community workers work with the primary health centre and work alongside a primary care doctor, under the supervision of a psychiatrist. There are only 4,000 psychiatrists in India, serving a population of 1.3 billion. Shifting certain aspects of care to non-specialists allows specialists to achieve greater coverage of the population.

A couple of weeks ago I was asked what I thought the future of technology in education was. It is a really interesting question. By its very nature, technology changes at a fast pace and making it accessible to pupils, teachers and other stakeholders is an ongoing 26. challenge.
