This is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, that, out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope. And where we are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can.

三、文本精讲

This is our time, 这是我们的时代,

什么时代呢?然后是并列的三个动词不定式表示目的:

首先是:

to put our people back to work 让我们的人民重新就业

这里有个结构,叫做put sb./sth. back to …,表示“把某人或者某物放回到原处”。2008年由于经济危机的影响,很多美国人被迫失业,所以这句话,是奥巴马在上任时向大家做出的让大家重新就业的承诺。

然后是and引导的并列成分:

and open doors of opportunity for our kids; 同时,为我们的孩子打开机会的大门;

这里也有个很好的结构,叫做open the door/doors for sb.,表示“为某人打开大门”。这里想表达的意思,就是不光要解决这一代美国人的就业问题,也要为下一代美国人的生存找好出路。

紧接着是第二个动词不定式表目的:

to restore prosperity去恢复繁荣

和一个and引导的并列成分:

and promote the cause of peace;同时推动和平事业;

the cause of sth.,字面意思是“某事的起因”,这里我们可以把cause理解成“目标、事业”。

然后是第三个动词不定式表目的:

to reclaim the American dream重申美国梦

claim是动词“声称”,reclaim就是“再次声称”,也就是动词“重申”。为什么要重申美国梦呢?首先我们要知道什么叫做“美国梦”,所谓的美国梦,简单来说,就是:life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement regardless of social class or circumstances of birth.(无论出身高贵还是卑微,每个人都可以通过自己的努力来争取机会让自己的生活过得更好。)但是因为在2008年,全球经济危机,美国的经济形势整体比较萧条,很多人的基本生活都得不到保障了,所以奥巴马这里才向大家做出了重申美国梦的承诺;

然后又是一个并列成分:

and reaffirm that fundamental truth, 再次确认一个基本真理,

什么真理呢?然后是两个that引导的同位语从句来解释说明这个真理的内容是什么:

that out of many, we are one;

out of我之前跟大家讲过,有“出自……”的意思,这里的out of many,意思是美国人口出自多个种族,比如白人、黑人、拉美人、亚洲人等等,所以这里的out of many, we are one,我们就可以理解成:虽然我们来自不同种族,但我们团结一致;

that while we breathe, we hope.

这句话的字面意思是:当我们呼吸的时候,我们就会希望;我们可以稍加润色,和前面那句话形成排比,叫做:只要我们一息尚存,我们就会保持希望。

大家应该发现了,到目前为止,刚才我们学的这些句子,连起来的时候整体结构看起来非常严谨,由一个基本的时间状语This is our time开始,紧跟三个动词不定式表目的,大家要明白一点,在语言表达当中,善于运用“三”的原则是非常具有穿透力的,因为层层传达的理念,在第三处往往能够彻底穿透听众的心灵;并且这三个动词不定式里,每个动词不定式都是and连起来的并列结构,所以无论是演讲者说出来,还是听众听起来,都会越来越感同身受、备受鼓舞。

我们再把刚才的整个部分连起来看一遍:

This is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, that, out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope.

这是我们的时代,让我们的人民重新就业,为我们的孩子打开机会的大门;恢复繁荣,促进和平;让美国梦重放光芒,再证这一基本真理,那就是:虽然我们来自不同种族,但我们团结一致;只要我们一息尚存,我们就会保持希望。

我们继续来看这个演讲片段的最后一句话,这也是整个片段最具爆发力的句子,所以整体演讲语速明显加快,并且铿锵有力:

这里有两个我们需要注意的地方:第一个地方是一个句型,叫做be met with sth.,表示“遭遇某事”,尤其指“遭受困难”;第二个地方,就是cynicism,这个词的意思是“犬儒主义”,“犬”就是“狗”,“儒”指的是“学者”,犬儒主义最早指的是古希腊哲学家安提斯泰尼(Antisthens)所主张的一种哲学思想,号召大家重返自然,克服欲望,不要去追求任何外界的利益和名誉。犬儒主义有一个很有名的代表人物,叫做第欧根尼(Diogenēs),这个人每天在大街上像一条狗一样过着行乞的生活。据说有一次亚历山大大帝去大街上拜访他,问他想要什么恩赐,第欧根尼说:“你别站在那里挡着我晒太阳就行。”

犬儒主义本来是一种很值得尊敬的哲学理念,但是现代的犬儒主义,往往指的是对任何奋斗的个体或群体进行讥讽嘲笑的行为,所以往往表示贬义。

cynicism的形容词,叫做cynical,表示“犬儒主义的”,比如说:Don?t be so cynical on new ideas.(别老是用犬儒主义的态度去对待新想法。)

除了遭受冷嘲热讽和质疑,还有第三个障碍,那就是:

and those who tell us that we can't,那些告诉我们我们做不到的人,

这里的those指的是“那些人”,后面的who tell us that we can?t是who引导的定语从句来修饰,具体说明那些人是谁;

紧接着就是遭遇到这些阻碍之后的反击:

we will respond我们会做出回应

什么回应呢?然后是with作方式状语:

with that timeless creed用那个永恒的信条

什么信条呢?后面是that引导的定语从句:

that sums up the spirit of a people: 总结了一个民族精神的信条:

sum up意思是“总结”,后面的a people指的是“一个民族”,也就是美国;

这个信条是什么呢?

我们再把最后一句话完整看一遍:

倘若有人嘲讽我们、怀疑我们,或者告诉我们我们做不到,那么我们就以这一凝聚了整个民族精神的永恒信条回应:是的,我们能做到!

五、亮解单词

1. opportunity [?ɑ:p?r?tu:n?ti]n. 机会

前缀op-和ob-一样,表示“相对”,比如说object(反对),就是“投向对面”;opportunity中间的port作单词的时候是“港口”的意思,opportunity这个词,早期指的是“港口对面的风迎面吹过来”,这对于海上的水手来说,是一件大好事,因为自己的船就可以迎着风一路驶向港口。后来opportunity通常用来表示“顺风顺水的机会”,逐渐演变成了“机会”的意思。

2. restore [r??st?r] vt. 修复;恢复

前缀re-表示“再次”,后面的store,除了有名词“商店”的意思,也有动词“存储”的意思,因为商店就是“存货的地方”。restore的意思是“再次存入”,指的是“把空缺或者缺陷填满”,也就是动词“修复、恢复”的意思。比如说:Her job is restoring old paintings.(她的工作是修复旧画。)

3. prosperity [prɑ:?sper?ti] n. 繁荣

去掉名词后缀-ity,就是:

prosper […prɑsp?] vi. 繁荣;兴旺

前缀pro-表示“向前”,后面的-sper-表示“希望”,很像我们之前学过的-spir-(呼吸)那个词根,所以我们可以把这两个词根结合记忆,因为一个人只有“呼吸”,才会有“希望”。prosper的意思,就是“迈向希望”,意指“繁荣、兴旺”,比如说:He hopes his business will prosper.(他希望自己的生意兴隆。)它的形容词,叫做prosperous,表示“繁荣的、兴旺的”,比如说:This market looks very prosperous.(这个市场看起来很繁荣。)

英语当中还有两个词,也表示“繁荣、兴旺”:

一个叫做thrive,这个词来自three(三),古人把“三”和“多”划等号,所以thrive 更偏重于指数量上“很多很多”,比如说:New businesses thrive in this area.(这一带新商家蓬勃兴起。)

另一个叫做flourish,这个词来自flower(花朵),寓意是“开花结果”,除了可以作近义词表示“繁荣、兴旺”之外,也可以专门指植物“健康、茁壮成长”,比如说:Plants flourish in this environment.(植物在这个环境下茁壮成长。)

但是prosper这个单词,因为有pro-(向前)这个前缀,所以更加突出的是“不断成功、越来越好”,这是其它两个单词没有的含义,比如说:You can?t prosper if you are doing something you don?t like.(如果你做的事情自己不喜欢,是不能变的越来越好的。)所以这几个词的细微区别,大家要注意区分。

4. promote [pr??m??t] vt. 促进;提升;推销

我们之前学过一个词,叫做motion(运动),字母组合mot和move一样,都表示“动”,而promote的字面意思是“向前动”,也就是动词“促进”的意思。比如说:This meeting has promoted better understanding between the two companies.(这次会议促进了两家公司更好的了解。)

在企业里,promote也可以表示“提升、晋升”,比如说:He just got promoted in his company.(他刚在公司里得到了岗位晋升。)

在买卖当中,promote还表示“促销、推销”,比如说:The singer is holding a concert to promote his new album.(这名歌手正在举行一场演唱会来推销自己的新专辑。)

promote的名词,叫做promotion,我们在超市里,经常在一些促销的商品上见到这个单词,大家以后可以留意一下。

5. reclaim [r??kle?m] vt. 重申;收回

claim本意是“声称”,也可以表示“声称一件东西是自己的”,也就是“认领”,比如机场的Baggage Claim,就是“行李提取”;reclaim这个词,可以表示“再次声称”,也就是“重申”;也可以表示“再次认领”,也就是“收回”。比如说:The team reclaimed the champion from their opponents.(这个队从对手那里夺回了冠军称号。)

6. reaffirm [?ri:??f?:rm] vt. 重申

前缀re-表示“再次”,后面是辅音双写af-引导的形容词firm(坚固的、坚定的),reaffirm表示“再次坚定自己的立场”,也就是动词“重申”,但是和reclaim相比,reaffirm没有“收回”的意思,这也是这两个词的最大区别。

7. fundamental [?f?nd??mentl] adj. 基本的;根本的

这个词前面的fund和found(建立)有关,后面是名词后缀-ment加形容词后缀-al,fundamental突出强调“建立一件事的基础”,也就是形容词“基本的、根本的”,比如说:There is a fundamental difference between the two points of view.(这两个观点有根本区别。)

8. doubt [da?t] vt.&vi. 怀疑n. 怀疑;疑惑

这个词和double(两倍的)相关,“怀疑”突出的,是“生二心”,也就是不信任对方。

doubt的形容词叫做dubious(可疑的),比如说:I was dubious about this plan.(我对这个计划持怀疑态度。)也就是对这个计划“没有把握”。

9. creed [kri?d]n. 信条;教义

这最早是一个宗教词汇,和“相信”有关,英语里有个很常见的单词,叫做incredible(难以置信的),中间的-cred-,就和creed相关。
