I suppose that the most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention, and especially if it’s given from the heart. When people are talking, there’s no need to do anything but receive them.Just take them 39 .Listen to what they’re saying.Care about it.Most times caring about it is even more important than 40 it.

One of my patients told me that when she tried to tell her story, people often interrupted to tell

her that they had once had something just like what happened to her.Subtly, her pain became a story about themselves.Eventually she stopped talking to most people. We connect through listening. When we interrupt what someone is saying to let them know that we understand.we move the focus of attention to ourselves. But when we listen, they know we care.

I have ever learned to respond to someone crying by just listening. In the old days I used to reach for the handkerchiefs, until I realized that passing a person a handkerchief may be just another way to shut him down, to take them out of t heir experience of sadness. Now I just listen. When they have cried all they need to cry, they find me there with them.

This simple thing has not been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been taught since I was very young at school.I thought people listened only because they were too shy to speak or did not know the answer.A loving silence often has far more power to heal than the kindest words.

56.What does the author valued most in the communication with each other?

A.Deep understanding. B.Saying “I’m sorry.”

C.Attention from heart. D.Doing nothing.

57.The woman patient stopped telling her story to most people because .

A.she didn’t get enough respect from others

C.people often told her their own opinions

D.people couldn’t understand her sad situation

58.If you hand a handkerchief to someone crying, you may .

A.hurt his feelings B.make him embarrassed

C.encourage him to continue to cry D.stop him from letting out his sorrow

59.It can be inferred from the passage that while communicating, .

A.listening is a perfect way to respond to others

B.people keep silent because they don’t know the answer

C.keeping silent means being too shy to speak

D.it is easy to form the habit of listening silently

60.Which of the following might be the author’s opinion about communication?

A.Keep silent. B.Just listen.

C.Be careful. D.Tell your own story.

A public high school in the rural town of Boonsbro, Maryland, offers a special program. Top students in the ninth and tenth grades can attend single-sex classes for math, science, English and social studies.

The aim is to help teenagers keep their mind on their work by keeping males and females apart. Rebecca Brown chooses the students for what Boonsboro High School calls the Academy. "What we really want to do is take that top group of kids and take them to the very highest level they can achieve here, so that they're prepared for college." She said. They need high marks and test scores and strong teacher recommendations. They also need to be involved in activities.

Michael Bair has been at Boonsboro High for twenty years and directs the Academy. His ninth-grade English class for boys centers on books that he believes boys find interesting. "The novels they're reading now, are very manly novels. They’re novels that deal with the arrogance(傲慢) of m an and the pride of man.” One of those books, for examp le, is "The Call of the Wild" by Jack

London. This classic story tells of a dog stolen from his home and sold to work as a sled dog in Canada's Klondike Gold Rush.

On this day, the students are working in small groups. Vincent and Logan explain why they are drawing pictures that relate to the story. Vincent said, "The main character, Buck, he gets abducted(绑架) and they send him off to the Yukon in a train. So I'm drawing part of the story where he's in the train. It gets you to visualize the setting of the story and gets you to think more about what's going on in the story, the important events of the story." "Instead of just doing work sheets about it, this is a lot more fun." Logan added happily.

Morgan Van Fleet is a senior at Boonsboro High. She liked being in the Academy. She says boys and girls act differently when they are together in a classroom. "To me, it almost seems like it's hindering(妨碍) your chances at developing yourself because you're more focused on 'Oh, I wish they'd shut up. Oh, what do they think of me?' instead of focusing on what's the homework or what's going on in this class, what's the lesson."

61.What is the purpose of the text?

A.To introduce. B.To persuade.

C.To instruct. D.To educate.

62.In Rebecca Brown’s opinion,.

A.any student in Boonsboro High School can take part in the program

B.students in the program are expected to get well prepared for college

C.Vincent thinks that his drawings can help understand the novel better.

D.Morgan Van Fleet thinks the program does no good to her.

65.The text is probably taken from .

A.a school’s introduction B.a teacher’s diary

C.a headmaster’s speech D.a news report

In fact, when I asked Arianna, my niece, why she was part of Banderas' fan club, she replied with a doubtful tone that she did not wish to be rejected in by the other teens.

what if it isn’t a dog-eat-dog world? What if caring for a dog or for a mom with Alzheimer’s(老年痴呆症) makes you stronger and allows you to live longer?

Researchers at the University of California-Berkeley are challenging our long-held belief that humans are born to be selfish.

Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection was misunderstood by his male followers, the researchers say. Rather than “every man for himself,” darwin believed that humans are suc cessful as a species precisely because of our educational, selfless and sympathetic characteristics.

Why has it taken so long for Darwin’s central revelation(揭示) to be properly understood? “We’ve had too many men in social science,” Berkeley psychology pr ofessor Dacher Keltner told me in an intervies. “Female scientists acknowledge that caring for people is part of human nature according to the research, which shows the human ability to care exists in our brains and nerve systems.”

In my book Passages in Caregiving, I urge women who take the whole responsibility for taking care of an elderly parent or a sick relative to build a Circle of Care. Reach out to your brothers and sisters, friends, neighbors and community volunteers to help you care, because no one can perform this overwhelming role alone. You will be as shocked as I to learn how the most selfless caregivers are rewarded with longer life.

Sysmpathy is not a woman’s word. In fact it makes all of us stronger under stress and more highly respected b y our peers. For so long we have repeated the false saying “Nice guys finish last.” But the 40 richest Americans committed to doing good by donating half their fortunes are no spring chickens. So here is my new explanation: Nice guys die last.

71.The first paragraph serves to .

A.give the background of the topic

B.blame the world for selfishness

C.bring out the topic of the passage

D.urge people to care for a dog

72.In Passages in Caregiving, women are advised to .

A.help as many people as possible

B.take good care of themselves

C.learn how to live a longer life

D.share the responsibility of caring with others

73.The underlined words “no spring chickens” in the last paragraph refer to.

A.rich people B.poor people

C.young people D.aged people

74.Why does the author mention the 40 richest Americans’ commitment in this passage?

A.To argue against offering sympathy.

B.To use it as an example to support his opinion.

C.To show their generosity to society.

D.To call on people to learn from them.

75.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

A.Measures must be taken to improve the world

B.Darwin’s theory of evolution is out of date now

C.Selflessness could be the secret to longer life

D.Males and females have different opinions about selflessness

阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题。(请注意问题后的词数要求)

What is the single largest cause of sick leave in the UK? The answer is not the common cold or flu, but back pain. Back pain affects one in three British adults, costs the country over £5 billion every year and is extremely difficult to treat.

But now Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) will be offering a new solution: acupuncture (针灸). The ancient Chinese needle treatment has been around in the UK for many years, but this is the first time it has been officially supported. Traditionally, doctors in the UK have advised back pain sufferers to stay active, do stretching exercises and take painkillers when necessary. In more serious cases some people are given X-ray treatment or injections.

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence(NICE), however, says there is evidence that acupuncture may than expensive X-rays or injections, so patients who have been suffering for over six weeks should be given a choice. As an alternative to acupuncture, patients will be able to choose either a course of spinal manipulation(脊椎推拿), or a series of special exercise session.

In the UK, acupuncture is classed as a complementary(辅助的)treatment, which is the term given to a medical procedure which hasn’t gone through the strict trials by which scientists prove some treatments work.

While many experts have welcomed the move to make acupuncture available, some are still skeptical about its effectiveness. Research from the US earlier this month found that simulated (模拟)acupuncture using toothpicks which do not make a small hole in the skin could be as good as using real needles. So while some are yet to be convinced back pain sufferers will be hoping that acupuncture helps get them feeling healthy and mobile again. Employers, on the other hand, will be hoping it gets them back to work.

76.What is the best title of the text?(within 10 words)

77.Which sentence in the text is closest in meaning to the following one?

Not all experts are convinced of the benefit of acupuncture although many of them have been for the application of the treatment.

78.Fill in the blank in Paragraph 3 with proper words.(within 5 words)

79.What’s the difference between simulated acupuncture using toothpicks and real acupuncture?

(within 20 words)

80.Translate the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 into Chinese.

23. How long does Potty about Potter last? A. Two days. B. Four days. C. Five days. D. One week. B Many of us love July because it’s the month when nature’s berries and stone fruits are in abundance. These colourful and sweet jewels form British Columbia’s fields are little powerhouses of nutritional protection. Of the common berries, strawberries are highest in vitamin C, although, because of their seeds, raspberries contain a little more protein (蛋白质), iron and zinc (not that fruits have much protein). Blueberries are particularly high in antioxidants (抗氧化物质). The yellow and orange stone fruits such as peaches are high in the carotenoids we turn into vitamin A and which are antioxidants. As for cherries (樱桃), they are so delicious who cares? However, they are rich in vitamin C. When combined with berries of slices of other fruits, frozen bananas make an excellent base for thick, cooling fruit shakes and low fat “ice cream”. For this purpose, select ripe bananas for freezing as they are much sweeter. Remove the skin and place them in plastic bags or containers and freeze. If you like, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice on the bananas will prevent them turning brown. Frozen bananas will last several weeks, depending on their ripeness and the temperature of the freezer. If you have a juicer, you can simply feed in frozen bananas and some berries or sliced fruit. Out comes a “soft-serve” creamy dessert, to be eaten right away. This makes a fun activity for a children’s party; they love feeding the fruit and frozen bananas into the top of the machine and watching the ice cream come out below. 24. What does the author seem to like about cherries? A. They contain protein. B. They are high in vitamin A. C. They have a pleasant taste. D. They are rich in antioxidants. 25. Why is fresh lemon juice used in freezing bananas? A. To make them smell better. B. To keep their colour. C. To speed up their ripening. D. To improve their nutrition. 26. What is “a juicer” in the last paragraph? A. A dessert. B. A drink. C. A container. D. A machine. 27. From which is the text probably taken? A. A biology textbook. B. A health magazine. C. A research paper. D. A travel brochure. C Teens and younger children are reading a lot less for fun, according to a Common Sense Media report published Monday. While the decline over the past decade is steep for teen readers, some data in the report shows that reading remains a big part of many children’s lives, and indicates how parents might help encourage more reading. According to the report’s key findings, “the proportion (比例) who say they ‘hardly ever’ read for fun has gone from 8 percent of 13-year-olds and 9 percent of 17-year-olds in 1984 to 22 percent and 27 percent respectively today.” The report data shows that pleasure reading levels for younger children, ages 2—8, remain largely the same.
