TEST 21

Section A

Directions:In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations and 2 long conversations. At the end of each conversation, one or more questions will be asked about what was said.

Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken only once. After each question

there will be a pause. During the pause, you must read the four choices marked A), B),

C), and D), and decide which is the best answer. Then mark the corresponding letter

on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the center.

1. W: Now, this one shows the view right out of my hotel room.

M: Wow, it looks just like a postcard.

Q: What are the speakers probably doing?

2. M: You know, at first, I didn’t realize what a comedian Howard is!

W: Oh, I know, he fools a lot of people.

Q: How would the speakers describe Howard?

3. (Ring…Ring…Sound of phone being picked up.)

M: Hello?

W: Hello, is Rita there? .

M: Hang on a minute, I’ll see.

Q: What does the man imply about Rita?

4. W: Today’s the first of the month. Isn’t your rent due today?

M: Yes, but I always pay it the day before it’s due.

Q: What does the man say about his rent?

5. M: Excuse me. I have a ticket for the 6 o’clock flight to N ew York. But I’m afra id I

can’t make it. Is there a seat available for tomorrow morning?

W: Let me see. I’m sorry. All the morning flights have been booked up. The earliest we can get for you is the two o’clock flight in the afternoon.

Q: What does the conversation tell us?

6. W: I’d like to buy a copy of Prof. Franklin’s book on sea shells.

M: I’m sorry, Ms. That book has been out of print for some time now.

Q: What does the man say about the book?

7. M: Why did Margaret call yesterday?

W: She wanted to pick up some magazines she lent me.

Q: What do we learn from the conversation?

8. M: It’s such a beautiful day. Why not sit out in the backyard for a while and enjoy it?

W: I’d love to. But there’s a lot of laundry to do.

Q: What will the woman probably do?

Now you will hear two long conversations.

Conversation One

W: Wasn’t that lecture interesting? Of all sea animals, the simple jellyf ish, with its clear plastic membrane and strange bell-shaped body, has always intrigued me.

M: Professor Ladd sure knows what he’s tal king about, but I don’t understand why he said that jellyfis h can’t really swim. He carefully explained its distinctive method of locomotion.

W: Yes, and it’s fascina ting. When the jellyfish expands its bell, water rushes in. When it contracts its bell, the water is expelled in one direction, and the jellyfish moves in the other.

M: It’s really unique in the way it uses the principle of jet propulsion to move. But isn’t that swimming?

W: Perhaps, but I suppose not in the same sense as fish do. Fish propel themselves with their tails to go wherever they want. You see, a jellyfish can only move upward. Then, as it begins to sink again, it poisons the tiny creatures it uses for food with its long string like tentacles that dangle beneath it.

M: Oh, so it can’t swim just anywhere it wants.

W: Not at all. A jellyfish is taken wherever tides and currents carry it.

Questions 9 to 11 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

9. What is the main topic of this conversation?

10. How does a jellyfish move itself?

11. When does the jellyfish catch its food?

Conversation Two

M: Excuse me, madam.

W: Yes?

M: Would you mind letting me take a look in your bag?

W: I beg your pardon?

M: I’d like to look into your bag, if you don’t mind.

W: Well, I’m afraid I certainly do mind, if it’s all the same to you. Now go away.

M: I’m afraid I shall have to insist, madam.

W: And just who are you to insist, may I ask? I advise you to go away before I call a policeman.

M: I am a policeman, madam. Here’s my identity card.

W: What? Oh... well... and just what right does that give you to go around looking into people’s bags?

M: None whatsoever, unless I have reason to believe that there’s something in the bags belonging to someone else?

W: What do you mean belonging to someone else?

M: Well, perhaps, things that haven’t been paid for?

W: Are you talking about stolen goods? I don’t know what things are coming to when perfectly honest citizens get stopped in the street and have their bags examined.

M: Exactly, but if the citizens are honest they wouldn’t mind, would they? So may I look in your bag, madam? We don’t want to make a fuss, do we?

W: Fuss? Who’s making a fuss? Stopping people in t he street and, demanding to see what they’ve got in their bags. Now go away. I’ve got a train to catch.

M: I’m sorry. I’m trying to do my job as politely as possi b le but I’m afraid you’re making it rather difficult. However, I must insist on seeing what you have in your bag.

W: And what, precisely, do you expect to find there? The jewels?

M: Madam, if there’s nothing th ere which doesn’t belong to you, you can go straight off and catch your train and I’ll apologize for the inconvenience.

W: Oh, very well. There you are.

M: Thank you.

Questions 12 to 15 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

12. What is the man?

13. Why does the man stop the woman?

14. Where does the conversation probably take place?

15. How does the woman react to the man’s request?

Section B

Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once.

After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices

marked A), B), C), and D). Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2

with a single line through the center.

Passage One

Frank Cummings had been waiting three days. He had seen people walk in and out of the hotel across the street. Not one of them was the person Frank was looking for. “I know she’s in there,” he said to himself. “And I know she can’t stay in her room forever. Sooner or later she has to come out.” He checked his camera again and looked out of the w indow. The seat next to him was covered with cameras of all sizes.

He started to think about her. He needed a good picture of her to complete his book of photographs. Everyone knew she didn’t like photographers. She always tried to avoid them. Frank was watching the hotel door when she suddenly appeared. She was tall, beautiful and wearing fashionable clothes. A companion stood next to her. On her other side was a very big man—a driver she also used as a guard. “She has beauty and talent,” Frank thought. “Now I know why her fans admire her.”

All at once the actress and the others entered a car and drove away. The photographer

followed them in his car. “Just one prize picture,” he said. “That’s all I really want.” He knew this book of photographs would make him famous.

Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard.

16. What was Frank Cummings?

17. Why did Frank need a good picture of the actress?

18. What did everyone know about the actress?

Passage Two

According to some studies, the period from 6 a. m. to 10 a. m. is the average peak time for many major causes of death such as cancer and heart disease.

Until recently doctors were taught that the human body lives in a stable state, changing little during the day. The science of chrono-biology—the study of how time affects life—is sparking a medical revolution by revealing how much our bodies change through daily rhythms.

The natural biological rhythms are as vital as our heartbeats. By learning their secrets, we are dis covering new ways to prevent and cure illness. There isn’t a function in your body that doesn’t have its own rhythm. The absence of rhythm is death. In other words, our interior biological clock stops working.

Most people enjoy a peak in short-term memory and mental quickness in the late-morning hours until shortly before noon. Then a measurable dip in energy and efficiency begins around 1 p. m. In the afternoon, exercise endurance, reaction time and manual ability are at their highest.

Our daily rhythms can bring a dark side to the early evening, however. These hours include a second daily peak in heart attacks, although smaller than the morning’s. Around 7 p.m., alcohol takes longer to be cleared by your liver.

By understanding our body clocks, we can improve our health and continue to foster our survival. Without grasping, for instance, that our natural temperature rises one to two degrees from morning until evening, we could misjudge thermometer readings. A temperature of 99 degrees might signal perfect health at 5 p.m. but illness at 7 a.m.

Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage you have just heard.

19. According to this passage, when do most people enjoy a good short-term memory?

20. When do our livers take a longer time to clear alcohol?

21. What is the main idea of this passage?

Passage Three

After retiring from 30 years of teaching, Ethbell Pepper could easily have decided to sit back and relax and enjoy a peaceful retirement. But that kind of life is not for Ethbell Pepper. “I just wanted to do something different. If you are going to participate in life, do it. Don’t just sit down and look out of the window,” she said. At 68, she decided to become one of the pioneer par-ticipation in a program at the university of California. The program offers campus housing and

classes to people over sixty. She was enrolled in a class called Human Relationships and Diverse Soci ety. “I taught my minority students in my English and drama classes in high school for 20 years. But in this cou rse, I found out a lot about other cultures I didn’t know then. One of the more im portant lessons that I’m learning is to perceive, not to judge.” Older adults can add to the educa-tional resources of university by bringing with them a lot of valuable experience. Their presence on campus helps break some long beliefs of aging. Young students may have fears of growing older. But that kind of fear can be reduced as they see that older people can be active, healthy, and continue to contribute to society. The younger students can begin to see aging as a natural part of living.

Questions 22 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard.

22. What did Ethbell do when she was 68?

23. How long did Ethbell teach minority students?

24. What do elderly people do to the university?

25. What’s the most important lesson Ethbell is learning?

Section C

Directions:In this section, you will hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for the first time you should listen for its general idea. Then listen to the passage again.

When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks

numbered from 26 to 33 with the exact words you have just heard. For the blanks

numbered from 34 to 36 you are required to fill in the missing information. For these

blanks, you can either use the exact words you have just heard or write down the main

points in your own words. Finally, when the passage is read for the third time, you

should check what you have written.

The United States and five major Asian nations have announced a partnership to develop new energy technologies to reduce pollution and curb global warming without hurting economic development. The plan was officially unveiled Thursday at a (26) ministers’ meeting in Laos.

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer announced the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development. He says it will develop and (27) disseminate clean energy technologies among some of the biggest polluters in the developing and the (28) industrialized world.

The par tnership brings together the world’s two largest (29) polluters—the United States and China—and four other major Asian economies: Japan, India, Australia and South Korea. Together these six countries contribute more than one-half of the world’s so-called greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.

U.S. (30) Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick says the partnership will allow industrialized partners to gain a better understanding of the challenges (31) facing developing nations.

“We have to list en to our developing country (32) colleagues about some of their particular problems,” he said. “India and China in particular both have huge development challenges, of

which energy is a (33) critical component.”

Mr. Zoellick underscores that (34) the new partnership is not meant to replace or undermine the Kyoto Protocol, but complement it.

The Kyoto Protocol requires 35 industrialized nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by five percent by the year 2012. (35) The United States and Australian governments have refused to ratify the treaty because it does not mandate pollution curbs in developing nations like China and India.

(36) The new partnership is voluntary, does not have deadlines or pollution reduction targets and cannot enforce compliance.
