Passage 1

Americans in business are like people who are in business anywhere, they have a language of their own.

One such thing is "get your act together". When things go wrong in a business, an employer may get angry, he may shout "get your act together". "Getting your act together" is getting organized. In business it usually means developing a calm and orderly plan of action. It is difficult to tell exactly where the saying began. But it is probable that it was in the theater or movie industry. Perhaps one of the actors was nervous and made a lot of mistakes. The director may have said "Calm down now, get your act together." Word expert James Roger says the expression was common by the late 1970s.

Another expression used by American business people is "cut to the chase". For example, at an important meeting of one company, one official was giving a very long and uninteresting report and some people were falling asleep. Finally the president of the company said "Cut to the chase". "Cut to the chase" means stopping spending so much time on details or unimportant material, hurrying and getting to the good part. This saying was started by people who make movies. Hollywood movie producers believe that most Americans want to see action movies. Many of their movies show scenes in which the actors chase each other in cars or in airplanes or on foot. "Cut" is the director's word for stop. The director means stopping filming to leave some material and getting to the chase scene now.

21.The passage is mainly about____________.

25."Chase" is the movie director's word for ______________.

A. stop

B. action movies

C. scenes in which the actors chase each other in cars or in airplanes or on foot

D. unimportant material

Passage 2

Background music may seem harmless, but it can have a powerful effect on those who hear it. Recorded background music first found its way into factories, shops and restaurants in the USA. Very soon it spread to other parts of the world. Now it is becoming difficult to go shopping or eat a meal without listening to background music.

To begin with, background music was intended simply to create a soothing(舒适的) atmosphere. Recently, however, it's becoming a big business. An American marketing expert has shown that music can boost sales or increase factory production by as much as a third.

But it has to be the light music. Lively music has no effect at all on sales. Slow music can increase receipts (收入) by 34%. This is probably because shoppers slow down and have more opportunity to spot items they would like to buy. Yet, slow music isn't always the answer. The expert found that in restaurants slow music meant customers took longer to eat their meals, which reduced overall sales. So restaurant owners might be well advised to play faster music to keep the customers moving-unless, of course, the resulting indigestion (消化不良) leads to complaints.

26.Background music was first used_____________.

A. in the cinemas and theatres in the USA

B. in the offices and hospitals in the USA

C. in the schools and churches in the USA

D. in the factories, shops and restaurants in the USA

D. none of the above

29.Slow music is useless in ___________ in increasing sales.

D. cinemas

30.Restaurants owners are advised to play ____________ to increase overall sales.

A. lively music

B. loud music

D. faster music

Passage 3

In sixteenth-century France, the start of the new year was observed on April first. It was celebrated in much the same way as it is today with parties and dancing into the late hours of the night. Then in 1562, Pope(教皇)Gregory introduced a new calendar (日历) to the Christian world, and the new year fell on January first.

There were some people, however, who hadn't heard or didn't believe the change in the date, so they continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April first. Others played tricks on them and called them "April fools." They sent them on a "fool's errand" or tried to make them believe that something false was true.

In France today, April first is called "Poisson d'Avril (April Fish)." French children fool their friends by taping a paper fish to their friends' backs. When the "young fool" discovers this trick, the prankster (恶作剧的人) yells "Poisson d'Avril!"

Today Americans play small tricks on friends and strangers alike on the first of April. One common trick on April Fool's Day, is pointing down to a friend's shoe and saying, "Your shoelace is untied."

Whatever the trick, if the innocent victim falls for the joke the prankster yells, "April Fool! "

Some practical jokes are kept up the whole day before the victim realizes what day it is. Most April Fool jokes are in good fun and do not mean to harm anyone. The cleverest April Fool joke is the one that makes everyone laugh, especially the person upon whom the joke is played.

The symptoms tend to start from around September each year lasting until April, but are at their worst in the darkest months. The standard figure says that around 2% of people in Northern Europe suffer badly, with many more (10%) putting up with milder symptoms. Across the world the incidence (发生率) increases with distance from the equator (赤道), except where there is snow on the ground, when it becomes less common. More women than men are found having SAD. Children and young people can also suffer from it. The problem stems from the lack of bright light in winter. Researchers have proved that bright light makes a difference to the brain chemistry, although the exact means by which sufferers are affected is not yet known. As the cause is lack of bright light, the treatment is to be in bright light every day by using a lightbox or a similar bright treatment. (Going to a brightly-lit climate, whether skiing or somewhere hot, is indeed a cure). The preferred level

湖南自考学位英语模拟试题及答案详解(一)

2013湖南学位英语仿真模拟试题 试题(一) Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say “I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debt and y ou don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this rally a lie? Professor Jerald Jellison of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. (76)According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly w hen telling a “white lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intension of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way. Research has also be en done into the way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. T o the trained observer th ey are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now.” They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressures make it itch. Another gesture which gives liars away is what the writer Desmond Morris in his book Manwatching calls “the mouth cover”.(77)He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with the fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the mouth. Such a gesture
