The study followed ove r 200,000 peop le for at least 16 years. And it’s not just a weak link: the researchers found that the suicide risk was cut by around 50 percent for coffee addicts.

This isn’t the first time that researchers have discovered that coffee and smiles might go hand-in-hand. A 2011 study found that women who drink coffee cut their risk of depression by 15 percent compared to those who don’t. Michel Lucas, the head researcher of the most recent study, told The Huffington Post that coffee addicts can thank caffeine for the good news. The drug may actually act like a mild anti-depressant by tweaking levels of happy hormones .

Of course, there’s plenty of research out there that doesn’t look so kindly upon coffee drinkers. Recently, the New Yorker published an article arguing that while coffee may heighten focus, that means it also puts a squeeze on creativity. And of course, coffee’s well-known negative effects like insomnia(失眠症) and disturbed sleep cycles

still hold.

We are in the midst of a heated public debate over the benefits of online education.

I think that the incidents of cheating have increased for two interconnecting reasons .The first is the trend of packing as many students as possible into course sections as a means of saving money .The second is the structure

of the online courses themselves . It is evident that these two intertwining(结) trends can serve to produce academic cheating and plagiarism(剽窃).

In the wake of the Great Recession and the following budget crisis , the dean of one of the colleges I teach in increased class size by as many as 50 students in an attempt to save of the non - online courses I teach was intended for 32 to 35 pupils . But when I taught the course last semester , it was composed of 82 students.

Online courses serve to exacerbate(加剧)the trend toward larger class primary motive for the increase in online courses is that they do not require physical classroom space .This allows campus administrators t o cut costs by increasing the number of students enrolled in a particular course section even if they don ' t have classrooms .

What's more,when students take classes online,the professor does not have face-to-face contact with the vast majority of the students enrolled in the a result , one can never be sure that the students are doing their own work for there is little to stop them from paying another student to take their exams for is evident that both increased class sizes without any accompanying teaching assistance and the structure of online courses by themselves , makes it easier for students to cheat . This not only cheapens the college but also makes the whole of a college education meaningless.

Is there anything more harmless than a turtle? (Unless, I suppose, you’re a nice, leafy vegetable.) Turtles and tortoises—the main difference is that turtles dwell at least partially in water, while tortoises live exclusively on land—are slow-moving, peaceful animals whose main form of protection from the outside world is a hard shell. Not for nothing do we have the fable of the slow and steady tortoise winning the race. Turtles have existed in some form for more than 220 million years, outlasting their early contemporaries the dinosaurs(恐龙). Long-lived turtles and tortoises are symbols of perseverance in the natural world.

Unfortunately, the rules of the race are changing. Turtles and tortoises are among the world’s most endangered vertebrates（脊椎动物）. Only primates（灵长类动物）—human beings expected—are at greater risk of being wiped off the planet. The threats are many. The animals are collected by traders, eaten in the wild and in fine restaurants, used as pets or for traditional medicine, and sometimes simply killed. The very adaptations that once made them so successful—their long adult life span and delayed sexual maturity—has made them vulnerable as the world around them changed, mostly thanks to human beings.

A 2011 report from the Turtle Conservation Coalition makes it clear: we need to act now if we’re to save the turtles and the tortoises:

World of the Future Scientists think that wonderful things may come true in the future. Future means a time that is not yet here. It can be a short time from now or a long time from now. There will be everything to make the city as self-sufficient as possible including shopping malls, theatres and sports complexes in addition to facilities (contained in a separate structure) for power generation, heating and waste recycling. Apart from offering an almost limitless space for development, such underground development has many more attractive ecological advantages over traditional forms of housing. It is less disturbing than high rise development and therefore favorable in environmentally sensitive areas. Land above the complex can be set aside for parkland and recreational use. In towns or cities where pollution levels are high, air can be filtered through air pipes in the roof of an underground housing or industrial complex. A world underwater At the docks you step into a shiny metal submarine that is shaped like a shark. The door is closed behind you, and powerful engine starts to push. Down slides the submarine--like a shark diving. Deeper and deeper under the water. Soon all sunlight is gone. The headlights of the diving ship are turned on. Then, six miles below, you come to the sea bottom. From the diving submarine, you change to tiny jet boat and ride along close to the bottom of the ocean, almost as you would skim over the land in an air-plane. As you travel, you have fun looking out the window at the sights on the bottom of the ocean. You see strange fish and underwater mountains, cliffs, and valleys. But more than that--hotels and mining camps and farms and factories! A world in space Let's go back to dry land and take a future journey the other way-up instead of down. Huge rocket liners take you into space to visit the Moon Camp. You walk around on the moon in a special moon suit. You visit an observatory where a giant telescope looks far into space--farther than anyone has ever been able to see from Earth. You go deep down into one of the moon mines. After you have visited the moon, you visit the Mars Colony and the Venus Exploration Outpost. A new world on the Earth Let's go back to Earth. In the far, far future, girls--and boys, too--may be playing with dolls that look like the people of the planets visited by our spacemen. To control or run all kinds of toys, boys and girls may learn to use special computers --machines that answer questions and do arithmetic faster than you can blink. Bicycles and perhaps skates may be run by jet power, and a new thing to ride may be a small flying saucer. Imagine a race between them! Television screens probably will be large and flat, hanging on the wall or going across the four walls of a room. People on the screen will look as real as if they were right in the room with you. Highways What about highways of the future? Well, a very small child probably will be able to drive a car. Nobody will need to steer. Electric signals will hold each car on the right road to get wherever the "driver" wants to go. And it probably will be impossible for cars to smash together.
