Once there was a slave named Androcles, who was so badly treated by his master that he resolved to run away from him. He therefore secretly left his master’s house and hid himself in a forest, some miles distant from the city.

After wandering about for some time, he came to a large cave, and overcome by hunger and tiredness, he lay down in it, and soon fell fast asleep.

He was suddenly awakened by the roar of a wild beast; a great lion stood right at the mouth of the cave. There was no way he could escape!

Androcles expected nothing else than to be at once torn to pieces, but to his great surprise, the lion came gently towards him, without showing any signs of anger. It gave forth a low and mournful (悲哀的)sound, as if it were begging for his assistance. As the lion approached him, he noticed that one of its feet was swollen.

He then went up to the lion, took hold of the wounded paw(爪子), and examined it as a surgeon would examine a patient. He was not long in finding out the cause of the swelling; for he saw in the ball of the foot a very large thorn (刺). The slave pulled out the thorn, and pressed out of the wound a quantity of matter, which gave the lion immediate relief.

Then, the lion began to show his gratitude by every means in his power. He jumped about like a playful spaniel (西班牙猎犬), wagged his great tail, and licked the hands and feet of his physician. From that moment Androcles became his guest; the lion always shared his prey.

The slave continued to live like this for several months. At length, wandering carelessly through the woods, he was seized by a company of soldiers who were sent by the master to search for him.

注意:

1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

2. 应使5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语;

3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;

Paragraph 1: He was sentenced to be torn by a lion in the public arena (竞技场).

Paragraph 2: However, the lion didn’t act as most had imagined.

(From that moment Androcles became his guest; the lion always shared his prey.),最后救了奴隶。

Paragraph 1: He was sentenced to be torn by a lion in the public arena (竞技场).

1.The terrifying day finally arrived.

2. All the people in the city went there to see the brutal fight between the poor slave and a bloodthirsty beast.

3. When Androcles appeared in the arena, they began to cheer and hoot.

4. All eyes were on him, and time seemed to stop.

5. Overcome by a stab of fear, he almost collapsed to the ground, his heart pounding and his knees shaking.

6. And then came a furious roar and the great lion charged at him with its flaming eyes and gaping jaws.

7. Desperate and hopeless, the slave closed his eyes and dropped his sword, thinking that he was done for.

Paragraph 2: However, the lion didn’t act as most had imagined.

1. Much to their surprise, the savage beast stopped short , knelt down and then licked the slave’s hands and feet.

2. He behaved like a pet dog.

3. And then he let out a low roar, as if whispering to his friend, “Didn’t you recognize me?”

4.Indeed, it was the very lion the slave had helped in the forest.

5. Sighing with relief, the slave stroked his neck gently, tears of gratitude welling up in his

eyes.

6. So moved were people by the story that they begged the master to set free the slave and the lion.

7. One good turn deserves another, and in the end, Androcles, the slave, became a free man.

One time, the teachers at a school wanted to teach the students about airplanes. While all airplanes can fly, some are able to fly farther than others. This is because not all airplanes are built the same. For example, a fighter plane looks very different from a plane that people fly in when they want to go on a holiday. The teachers wondered how they could make students understand this.

Then, the science teacher, Mr Moose, decided that the school should have a paper airplane contest. Every student would design a paper airplane. They would stand in a line in the playground behind the school. The students would take turns throwing their airplanes. The student whose airplane went the farthest would win.

When Mr Moose announced the paper airplane contest to the students, they were very excited.

A student named Paul, who was on the school sports team, said to everyone else that his airplane would win. “I am the strongest,” Paul said. “So I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest.”

However, while Paul was saying this, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. Brian did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.

Brian realized what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big stack (叠) of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into his backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded an airplane. It didn’t go very far, so Brian took another piece and folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when Brian had used all the paper, he walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up.

The next day was the contest. All the students lined up. Everyone took turns. After a while, everyone had thrown except Paul and Brian. Paul went first. With a loud yell, he threw the airplane into the sky. It went farther than every other airplane. Everyone cheered.

Paragraph 1:

Finally, it was Brian’s turn.

___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2:

Brian won because he tried out many solutions to the problem of how to make an airplane fly very far.

___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ 参考范文:

Finally, it was Brian’s turn. Brian took the airplane that he had picked up the day before. He walked up to the line and, with all his strength, he threw the plane. It went flying, farther and farther, until finally it landed –10 feet past Paul’s plane! The whole school cheered. Brian won the contest. Mr Moose gave him a prize: a toy airplane.

Brian won because he tried out many solutions to the problem of how to make an airplane fly very far. He did this by testing out many different designs and comparing the results. When he found the design that worked best – the paper airplane that flew the farthest – he used it. Because Brian tried a lot of designs, he was able to make up for his lack of strength and beat Paul.

As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried. Arthur stopped and asked, “It looks like you’ve got a problem,” Arthur said. “I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry and I can’t start my car.” “Is there something I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.” “No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.” The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the long loud noise of an alarm. It was from the bank. There had been a robbery (抢劫)! Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer. Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him. She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that?” he thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!” Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. 1. Name________________ It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. College, career, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit (追寻) of the dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him. Over the phone, his mother told him, “Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral(葬礼)is Wednesday.” Memories flashed(闪现)through his mind like an old newsreel (新闻短片) as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days. “Jack, did you hear me?” “Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It’s been so long since I thought of him. I’m sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,” Jack said. “Well, he didn’t forget you. Every time I saw him he’d ask how you were doing. He’d reminisce (回忆) about the many days you spent over ‘his side of the fence’ as he put it, ” Mom told him. “I loved that old house he lived in,” Jack said. “You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man’s influence (影响) in your life,” she said. “He’s the one who taught me carpentry. I wouldn’t be in this business if it weren’t for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things that he thought were important. Mom, I’ll be there for the funeral.” Jack said. Busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser’s funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away. The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time, which was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture … Jack stopped suddenly. “What’s wrong, Jack?” his Mom asked. “The box is gone,” he said. “What box?” Mom ask ed. “There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he’d ever tell me was ‘the thing I value most’,” Jack said. It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it. “Now I’ll never know what was so valuable to him,” Jack said sadly. 1.

山川又可以细分为:forest, mountains, caves, islands and volcanoes, paths, rivers, sea。

高频短语–名词和形容词 * Magnificent forest of tall trees高大的森林 * Like a crowd of vivid green umbrellas像一群鲜艳的绿色雨伞* Emerald /?em(?)r?ld/ green leaves翠绿的叶子 * Vivid green stems鲜艳的绿色茎 * Like fluttering, emerald ribbons像飘动的翡翠丝带 * Blazing carpet of bluebells耀眼的风信子 * Red and orange berries红色和橙色浆果

One weekend in July,Jane and her husband,Tom,had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest.Unfortunately,on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel.By the time they reached the lake,Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp”and walked away. With no path to follow,Jane just walked on for quite a long time.After she had climbed to a high place,she turned around,hoping to see the lake.To her surprise,she saw nothing but forest and,far beyond,a snowcapped mountain top.She suddenly realized that she was lost. “Tom!”she cried.“Help!” No reply.If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving,but the farther she walked,the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall,Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night.Lying awake in the dark,Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family.She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him. Jane rose at the break of day,hungry and thirsty.She could hear water trickling(滴落)somewhere at a distance.Quickly she followed the sound to a stream.To her great joy,she also saw some berry bushes.She drank and ate a few berries.Never in her life had she tasted anything better.Feeling stronger now,Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake. As she picked her way carefully along the stream,Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me?Unfortunately,the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above.A few minutes later,another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse,thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again. Paragraph1: But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again. Paragraph2: It was daybreak when Jane woke up. Before getting lost While getting lost After getting lost 梳理记叙要素,归纳文本大意 who Jane,Tom what Jane was lost where in the forest when one weekend in July why a quarrel with Tom,her husband 主旨大意Jane was lost in the forest and survived in the end. 2.

At Dana's yard sale, Tim chose a baseball from the toys spread on the card table and asked about the price. Dana told him everything was a quarter except Nezumi, a cotton toy rat. It was gray with some cotton sticking out from the hole where an ear had been torn off. "Nezumi is extra special, so he's ten dollars. He needs a safe new home." Dana sighed. Tim laughed saying he didn't have ten dollars. Dana laughed, too and gave Nezumi to Tim as a free gift because he was her friend. When Tim whispered it was sort of old, Dana said old toys were the best. She then invited Tim to her birthday party the next evening, adding that her parents were giving her a real rat for her birthday. Tim was amazed and asked if it was a live rat. "Of course," Dana said. At home, Tim's mother showed him the gift she had bought for Dana. It was a knitting spool (编织线轴) shaped like a mushroom. Mom said Dana could knit a scarf for her doll. Tim sighed that Dana wasn't a knitting kind of person but a rat kind of person. Mom laughed after knowing what had happened. Together they drove to the pet store, where Tim searched and searched and selected a clear plastic ball, one in which the rat could run around on the floor safe from cats and dogs. Tim thought of Nezumi's ear and decided Dana's new rat would need this ball. The next day, Dana brought cupcakes to class. When she handed a cupcake to Tim, she asked if Tim brought Nezumi to school as Nezumi liked to ride in backpacks. Tim was at a loss because Nezumi was at home on his bed. Then Dana asked what gift he was giving her. Tim replied it was a surprise. In silence they sat for a while before he heard Dana say her parents were giving her a new bike for her birthday instead of a live rat because they thought rats would bite things. Paragraph 1: At home that afternoon, Tim stared at the plastic rat ball.
