I have been consistently opposed to feeding a baby regularly. As a doctor, mother and

scientist in child development I believe there i s nothing to recommend it, from the baby’s point of view.

Mothers, doctors and nurses alike have no idea of where a baby’s blood sugar level All we know is that a low level is harmful to brain development and makes a baby easily

annoyed. In this state, the baby is difficult to calm down and sleep is impossible. The baby asks

for attention by crying and searching for food with its mouth.

It is not just unkind but also dangerous to say a four-hourly feeding schedule will make a

baby satisfied. The first of the experts to advocate a strict clock-watching schedule was Dr.

Frederic Truby King who was against feeding in the night. I’ve never heard anything so

follow a timetable set by the mum. What is important is ridiculous. Baby feeding shouldn’t

feeding a baby in the best way, though it may cause some inconvenience in the first few weeks.

Well, at last we have copper-bottomed research that supports demand feeding and points

out the weaknesses of strictly timed feeding. The research finds out that babies who are fed on

demand do better at school at age 5, 7, 11 and 14, than babies fed according to the clock. By

the age of 8, their IQ(智商)scores are four to five percent higher than babies fed by a rigid

timetable. This research comes from Oxford and Essex University using a sample(样本)of

10,419 children born in the early 1990s,taking account of parental education, family income, a

health and feeling style. These results don’t surprise me.

sex and age, the mother’s

child’s

Feeding according to schedule runs the risk of harming the rapidly growing brain by taking no

account of sinking blood sugar levels.

I hope this research will put an end to advocating strictly timed baby feeling practices.

A.He is strict

B.He is unkind

C.He has the wrong idea.

D.He sets a timetable for mothers

小题2:The word copper-bottomed in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to _________

A.The baby will sleep well.

B.The baby will have its brain harmed.

C.The baby will have a low blood sugar level.

D.The baby will grow to be wiser by the age of 8.

小题4:The author supports feeling the baby_______.

A.in the night

B.every four hours

C.whenever it wants food

D.according to its blood sugar level

For high school leavers starting out in the working world,it is very important to learn

particular skills and practice how to behave in an interview or how to find all internship(实习).

In some countries, schools have programs to help students onto the path to work. In the Unites

States, however, such programs are still few and far between.

Research shows that if high schools provide career-related courses, students are likely to

get higher earnings in later years. The students are more likely to stay in school, graduate and

go on to higher education.

In Germany, students as young as 13 and 14 are expected to do internships. German

companies work with schools to make sure that young people get the education they need for

future employment.

But in America, education reform programs focus on how well students do in exams

instead of bringing them into contact with the working world. Harvard Education school

professor Robert

Schwartz has criticized education reformers for trying to place all graduates directly on

most

the four-year college track. Schwartz argued that this approach leaves the country’s

vulnerable(易受影响的)kids with no jobs and no skills.

Schwartz believed that the best career programs encourage kids to go for higher education

while also teaching them valuable practical skills at high sch001. James Madison High School

in New York, for example, encourages students to choose classes on career—based courses.

The school then helps them gain on—the-job experience in those fields while they’re still at high school.

However, even for teens whose schools encourage them to connect with work, the job

market is daunting. In the US,unemployment rates for 16-to 19-year-olds are above 20 percent

for the third summer in a row.

“The risk is that if teenagers miss out on the Summer job experience, they become part of

this generation of teens who had trouble in landing a job,”said Michael,a researcher in the US.

小题1:According to Robert Schwartz,_________.

A.there is no need for kids to go for higher education in the US

C.education reform should focus on students’performance in exams

D.teenagers in the US can’t miss out on the summer job experience

小题2:What’s the main idea of the text?

B.Tips on finding jobs for high school leavers.

C.The lack of career-based courses in US high schools.

D.Advice for American high school leavers.

解释说明性的短语或句子,如to be, that is, mean, stand for, namely, to refer to, to mean, in other words等,有时也以同位语、定语从句的形式出现,或用破折号、括弧来表示。

因果关系的语境,通常由because, so ,therefore, so that, so / such… that…

有时文章作者为了增强表达效果,会用一对反义词揭示事物的不同点,形成鲜明的对比,这时只要把握其中的一词,就不难推出另一词的含义,这时句中多见unlike; although; but; yet; while; on the contrary; on the other hand; for one thing; for another; instead of; rather

词语有or, like, similarly等。

such as, like, for example, for instance等连接性词语往往用来列举说明前面较难理解的名词。

D We've all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on airplane, surrounded by people who are, like us, deeply focused on their smartphones or, worse, struggling with the uncomfortable silence. What's the problem? It's possible that we all have compromised conversational intelligence. It's more likely that none of us start a conversation because it's awkward and challenging, or we think it's annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it's an invaluable social practice that results in big benefits. Dismissing small talk as unimportant is easy, but we can't forget that deep relationships wouldn't even exist if it weren't for casual conversation. Small talk is the grease (润滑剂) for social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. "Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk," he explains. "The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them." In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at UBC, invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction(互动) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience. "It's not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband," says Dunn. "But interactions with peripheral(边缘的) members of our social network matter for our well-being also." Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense of belonging, a bond with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense

第五讲词义猜测类专项练习 【分类真题】 (2019年全国卷II.A) My Favourite Books Jo Usmar is a writer for Cosmopolitan and co-author of the This Book Will series(系列)of lifestyle books. Here she picks her top reads. Matilda Roald Dahl I once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl's writing and it gave me a new appreciation for his strange and delightful words. Matilda's battles with her cruel parents and the bossy headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, are equally fumy and frightening, but they're also aspirational. After Dark Haruki Murakami It’s about two sisters —Eri, a model who either won’t or can’t stop sleeping, and Mari, a young student. In trying to connect to her sister, Mari starts changing her life and discovers a world of diverse "night people" who are hiding secrets. Gone Girl Gillian Flynn There was a bit of me that didn't want to love this when everyone else on the planet did, but the horror story is brilliant. There's tension and anxiety from the beginning as Nick and Amy battle for your trust. It's a real whodunit and the frustration when you realise what's going on is horribly enjoyable. The Stand Stephen King This is an excellent fantasy novel from one of the best storytellers around. After a serious flu outbreak wipes out 99.4% of the world's population, a battle unfolds between good and evil among those left. Randall Flagg is one of the scariest characters ever. 21. Who does "I" refer to in the text? A. Stephen King. B. Gillian Flynn. C. Jo Usmar. D. Roald Dahl.

近三年词义猜测题考查频次一览表 2017年2016年2015年 全国卷Ⅰ2(代词that;短语the water catcher) 1(单词courier) 1(单词contributions) 全国卷Ⅱ2(代词that;句子the tables are turned) 2(单词downside;代词 it) 1(短语signed off) 全国卷Ⅲ1(单词displaced) 2(代词them;短语 a pipe dream) / 近几年高考词义猜测题在数量上保持稳定,每套试卷中直接考查词义猜测的试题不超过 2道。 What does the underlined word "..." in Paragraph...refer to? What does the underlined phrase "..." in Paragraph...refer to? What does the underlined word "..." in Paragraph...mean? What does the author mean by "..." in Paragraph...? Which of the following can replace the underlined word "..." in Paragraph...?

1.根据定义(definition)猜测词义 如果生词有一个句子(定语从句或是同位语同位语前常有 or, similarly, that is to say, in other words, namely, or other, say, i.g. 定义常用的谓语动词多为:be, mean, deal with, be considered, to be, be called, define, represent, refer to, signify 等。 例1.Do you know what a “territory” is ? A territory is an area that an animal ,usually

the male, claims(声称)as its own.(2005年湖北卷) [分析]由定义可推知,这里territory指的是:“动物的地盘”。 例2.In fact, only about 80 ocelots, an endangered wild cat, exist in the U.S. today.(2005年浙江卷) [分析]由同位语an endangered wild cat我们很快猜出生词ocelots的义域:一种濒临灭绝野猫。 例3. Here is The Pines ,whose cook has developed a special way of mixing foreign food such as caribou ,wild boar ,and reindeer with surprising sauces . (2004年福建卷) According to the passage ,The Pines is a . A.place in which you can see many mobile homes B.mountain where you can get a good view of the valley C.town which happens to be near the Banff National Park D.restaurant
