Passage One

During the Christmas shopping rush in London, the interesting story was reported of a tramp who, apparently though no fault of his own, found himself locked in a well-known chain store late on Christmas Eve. No doubt the store was crowded with last-minute Christmas shoppers and the staff were dead beat and longing to get home. Probably all the proper security checks were made before the store was locked and they left to enjoy the three-day holiday untroubled by customers desperate to get last-minute Christmas presents.

However ridiculous that may be, our tramp found himself alone in the store and decided to make the best of it. There was food, drink, bedding and camping equipment, of which he made good use. There must also have been television sets and radios. Though it was not reported if he took advantage of these facilities, when the shop reopened he was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him. He seems to have been a man of good humor as indeed tramps very commonly are.

Everyone else was enjoying Christmas. So he saw no good reason why he should not do the same. He yielded himself cheerfully, and was taken by the police. Perhaps he had had a better Christmas than usual. He was sent to prison for seven days. The judge awarded no compensation to the chain store for the food and drink our tramp had consumed. They had, in his opinion, already received valuable free publicity from the story revealed in the newspaper and on television. Perhaps the judge had had a good Christmas, too.

Passage Two

Online distance learning is an instructional system which connects learners with educational resources. Students work on their own at home, at work, or at school and communicate with faculty and other students by means of e-mail, electronic meetings, videoconferencing, chat rooms, instant messaging and other forms of computer-based communication. There are both advantages and disadvantages to online distance learning.

There are many benefits to using online distance learning environments. Online education is available all the time, anywhere and to all people. However, there are weaknesses for some learners. The online learner only has the written text and no other face-to-face hints. This may confuse the learner and cause misunderstanding. While distance learning allows for an openness, it is also difficult because it is done by e-mail messages and writing, and therefore may take more time than face-to-face learning. Sometimes the messages can be overwhelming for many online students.

Universities, colleges and schools use online distance learning environments. These are important for students who may be unable to attend classes for various reasons like illnesses or busy everyday schedules. Some learners just want to further their studies at home. They enjoy the convenience of home learning as they take regular programs or enrichment classes.

Online courses keep learners very occupied at all hours of the day. There are a great many messages and other online resources to read and respond to. Most learners have regular jobs or attend regular school classes on ground as well. However, the benefits are clear. Online distance learning is becoming very popular. Some online classes have become a profitable business as they replace regular traditional means of learning.

6.Which of the following is TRUE of the passage about online distance learning?

A)It has more disadvantages than advantages

B)It is a learning form based on internet

C)It is not available for some students

D)It has only enrichment classes

7.Sometimes online distance learning can be a problem because _______.

A)learners can’t afford it

B)learners get too many hints

C)it involves excessive writing

D)it is not available at the weekend

8.One of the good aspects of online distance learning is _____________.

A)speed

B)convenience

C)easy operation

D)variety of instruction

9.What kind of students may NOT like online distance learning?

A)Those busy with their schedules

B)Those in need of further education

C)Those unable to attend regular classes

D)Those in favor of face-to-face teaching

10.With regular means of learning, the learners have to study ________.

A)at school

B)on their own

C)at all hours of the day

D)by means of reading and writing

Passage 3

Invented at the turn of the century, radio ( the transmission of electric signals without wires connecting the points of transmission and reception) became widespread throughout North America and Europe by the 1930s. The early radio was large and cumbersome but over the years the radio has become increasingly smaller and more portable. People now listen to the radio in their cars or carry a walkman when going from one place to another. Radio is perhaps the most convenient of all the media. The influence of the radio began to decline in the 1950s with the advent of television. But many people still consider radio superior in quality when it comes to analytical news programs.

On July 1, 1941, the FCC granted broadcasters permission to use commercial to help pay costs. NBC and the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) soon began regular commercial broadcasts in New York City.

The United States’ entry into World War Two in December 1941 delayed the commercial growth of TV, but broadcasting continued. In fact, CBS was one of the most notable of the early shows that same month----a documentary on Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor.

The manufacture of commercial TV equipment, however, ended almost entirely in 1942. But technical improvements in the laboratory continued at a more rapid pace because government officials thought television might have military uses. During the war, engineers developed new types of phosphors for TV picture tubes that greatly improved brightness and contrast. Clearer glass tubes helped to increase picture clarity.

After World War Two ended in 1945, television stations sprang up throughout the United States. The year 1951 saw the first coast-to-coast telecast. A TV boom was underway.

But the TV image still differed from the scene being telecast in one significant aspect: the image lacked color. Since the late 1930s, researchers had experimented extensively with color-TV systems. In December 1953, the FCC pave the way for color broadcasting by establishing a standard, and in 1954 color sets went on sale in the United States.

Passage 4

It is hard to predict how science is going to turn out, and if it is really good science it is impossible to predict. If the things to be found are actually new, they are by definition unknown in advance. You cannot make choices in this matter. You either have science or you don’t, and if you have it you are obliged to accept the surprising and disturbing pieces of information along with the neat and promptly useful bits.

The only solid piece of scientific truth about which I feel totally confident is that we are profoundly ignorant about nature. Indeed, I regard this as the major discovery of the past hundred years of biology. It is, in its way, an illumination piece of news. It would have amazed the brightest minds of the 18th century Enlightenment to be told by any of us how little we know and how bewildering seems the way ahead. It is this sudden confrontation with the depth and scope of ignorance that represents the most significant contribution of the 20th century science to the human intellect. In earlier times, we either pretended to understand how things worked or ignored the problem, or simply made up stories to fill the gaps. Now that we have begun exploring in earnest, we are getting glimpses of how huge the questions are and how far from being answered. Because of this, we depressed. It is not so bad being ignorant if you are totally ignorant; the hard thing is knowing in some detail the reality of ignorance, the worst spots and here and there the not-so-bad spots, but no true light at the end of the tunnel nor even any tunnels that can yet be trusted.

But we are making a beginning and there ought to be some satisfaction. There are probably no questions we can think up that can’t be answered, sooner or later, including even the matter of consciousness. To be sure, there may well be questions we can’t think up ever and therefore limits to the reach of human intellect, but that is another matter. Within our limits, we should be able to

work our way through to all our answers if we keep at it long enough and pay attention.

1.According to the author, really good science _______.

A)would surprise the brightest minds of the 18th century Enlightenment

B)will produce results which cannot be foreseen

C)will help people to make the right choice in advance

D)will bring about disturbing results

2.It can be inferred from the passage that scientists of the 18th century ______.

A)thought that they knew a great deal and could solve most problems of science

B)were afraid of facing up to the realities of scientific research

C)knew that they were ignorant and wanted to know more about nature

D)did more harm than good in promoting man’s understanding of nature

3.Which of the following statements is NOT true of scientists in earlier times?

A)They invented false theories to explain things they didn’t understand

B)They falsely claimed to know all about nature

C)They did not believe in results from scientific observation

D)They paid little attention to the problems they didn’t understand.

4.What is the author’s attitude towards science?

A)He is depressed because of the ignorance of scientists

B)He is doubtful because of the enormous difficulties confronting it

C)He is confident though he is aware of the enormous difficulties confronting it.

D)He is delighted because of the illuminating scientific findings.

5.The author believes that __________.

A)man can find solutions to whatever questions concerning nature he can think up

B)man cannot solve all the problems he can think up because of the limits of human

intellect

C)sooner or later man can think up all the questions concerning nature and answer them

D)questions concerning consciousness are outside the scope of scientific research

VR (Virtual Reality) technology can be widely used in many areas, such as urban planning, interior design, industrial simulation, historic restoration, design of bridges and roads, real estate sales, tourism, education, water power, geological disasters, education and training, and provide practical solutions. In the field of advanced manufacturing, standing in front of large aircraft engines of 3D image, The strengths of virtual -"can be arbitrary tear down" express thoroughly. The operators can put a lot of virtual engine parts one by one, and then into the internal engine.Virtual reality achieves many functions, such as,a cross-platform interactive design, virtual display, virtual assembly, and CAE data visualization capabilities, so it increase the team's design efficiency drastically, and researchers can find the corrected design flaws and potential process problems timely and improve product development manufacturing success rate. Virtual reality technology is also very useful in the field of education and training. It creates conditions for the real tests which are not available or difficult to complete the teaching function. When it refers to high-risk or extreme environments, inaccessible or irreversible operation, high cost, high consumption, large or comprehensive training, etc., virtual reality technology can provide reliable, safe and economical experimental projects.G-Magic Virtual Reality Lab of East China University is an example of virtual reality in University Teaching. The lab has a CAVE virtual reality of cave system and college students’design work can be projected onto the walls, ceiling and floor. For example, the student designed a shower room, he can use the system to show it in the laboratory as the same size as the real
