Passage Four

Shopping is not as simple as you may think! There are all sorts of tricks at play each time we reach out for that particular brand (品牌)of product on the shelf.

Colouring, for example.,varies according to what the producers are trying to sell. Health foods are packaged (包装)in greens, yellows or browns because we think of these as healthy colours. Ice cream packets are often blue and expensive goods, like chocolates, are gold or silver.

When some kind of pain killer was brought out recently, researchers found that the colours turned the customers off because they made the product look weak and ineffective. Eventually.,it came on the market in a dark blue and white package—blue because we think of it as safe, and white as calm.

The size of a product can attract a shopper. But quite often a bottle doesn’t contain as much as it appears to.

It is believed that the better-known companies spend,on average,70 percent of the total cost of the product itself on packaging!

The most successful producers know that it’s not enough to have a good product. The founder of Pears soap, who for 25 years has used pretty little girls to promote (推销)their goods, came to the conclusion:“Any fool can make soap, but it takes a genius (天才)t o sell it.”

()48. Which of the following may trick a shopper into buying a product according to the text?

A. The cost of its package.

B. The price of the product.

C. The colour of its package.

D. The brand name of the product.

()49. The underlined part“the colours turned the customers off”(in Para. 3 )means that the colours _____.

A. attracted the customers strongly

B. had weak effects on the customers

C.tricked the customers into shopping

D. caused the customers to lose interest

()50. Which of the following is the key to the success in product sales?

A. The way to promote goods.

B.The discovery of a genius.

C. The team to produce a good product.

D. The brand name used by successful producers. ()51. Which of the following would be the best title for this text?

A. Choice of Good Products

B.Disadvantages of Products

C. Effect of Packaging on Shopping

D. Brand Names and Shopping Tricks

Passage Five

Have you ever argued with your loved ones over simple misunderstandings(误解)?Little wonder. We often believe we’re more skillful in getting our point across than we actually are, according to Boza Keysar,a professor at the University of Chicago. In his recent study, speakers tried to express their meanings using unclear sentences. Speakers who thought listeners understood were wrong nearly half the time. Here’s some good advice to reduce misunderstanding:

(1)Don’t trust what you see from the listener. Listeners often nod, look at you or say"uhhuh"to be polite or move the conversation along. But it’s easy to consider these as signs of understanding.

(2)Train the editor(编辑)in your head. If you say,"Beth discusses her problems with her husband,"it’s not clear whether she’s talking to her husband or about him. Try instead,"Beth talks to her husband about her problems."or"Beth talks to others about the problems with her husband."

(3)Ask listeners to repeat your message. Introduce your request by saying"I want to be sure I said that right."Questions like"How does that sound?"or"Does that make sense?"may also work. (4)Listen well. When on the receiving end,ask questions to be sure you’re on the same page. After all,it isn’t just the speaker’s job to make his speech understood.

()52. Why does the writer give us the advice?

A.We’re not skillful enough to make clear sentences.

B.Misunderstanding is damaging our normal lives.

C. Misunderstanding occurs now and then.

D.It’s impolite to say NO to others.

()53. The writer suggests that when talking to others, the speaker should _____.

A. know that listeners will show him that they understand his words

B.express himself clearly even when he sees signs of understanding

C. notice listener’s signs of understanding

D.look directly into his listener’s eyes

()54. By Train the editor in your head, the speakers are advised _____.

A. to get themselves trained by a good editor

B. to discuss problems with their husbands or wives

C. to express themselves in long but simple sentences

D.to make sure each sentence has only one meaning

()55. In the last paragraph, the underlined words you’re on the same page mean that _____.

A. you’re following the speakers closely

B. you’re reading the same page as the speaker does

C.you should know which page the speaker refers to

D. your story is written on the same page as the speaker’s

Where to live —in the City or in the Country

Some people like living in the city because city life has many advantages. They think there

are more job opportunities in cities.Life there is more colorful and meaningful than that in the

country. And there are more modern conveniences in cities for people to enjoy. But some other

people prefer to live in the countryside. They say life in the countryside is closer to nature and

better for their health.Life there is quieter and that country people are more honest than city people.

I would like to live in a city when I am young to earn enough money and I live in the countryside

when I am old for having a quiet life.

[专升本类试卷]专升本英语(阅读)模拟试卷5 一、Part III Reading Comprehension Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. 0 On a rainy day, you will see many streams of muddy(多泥的)water running down the slopes(斜坡)of a hill. The water is muddy because it washes away soil from the hill slopes. Sometimes soil is blown away by strong winds. When the soil is carried away by water or wind, we say that the land is eroded(侵蚀). This is known as soil erosion. Plants cannot grow on eroded land. There is not enough soil on eroded land to give them the things they need. Plants need water and salts from the soil. We can do a number of things to stop soil erosion. This is called soil conservation(保护). One way of soil conservation on flat, open ground is to grow small plants such as grasses. Their roots hold the soil tightly together. Another way is to plant trees around an open field. Thus soil erosion by strong winds cannot take place. Rows of trees act as a very big wall. Soil erosion on slopes can be stopped by cutting "steps" called terraces(梯田). Water carrying soil cannot run straight down the slope now. It has to run down the terraces. This slows down the flow(流速)of the water. Most of the soil in the water is left behind on the terraces. There are some other ways for soil conservation. 1 On a rainy day the water running down the slopes of a hill is muddy because______ . (A)there are no terraces on the slopes (B)there are no small plants on the slopes (C)it washes away soil from the slopes
