Reading Comprehension(60 points)

Directions: There are 4 reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choic es marked A,B,C and D. You should decide on the best choice.Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:

Do parents owe their children anything? Yes, they owe them a great deal.

One of their obligations is to give them a sense of personal worth, for self est eem is the basis of good mental health. A youngster, who is constantly made to fe el stupid and unworthy, constantly compared to brighter brothers, sisters, or cousins, will become so unsure, so afraid of failing, that he or she won’t try at all. Of cour se, they should be corrected when they do wrong; this is the way children learn. B ut the criticisms should be balanced with praise, preferably with a smile or a kiss. No child is ever too old to be hugged.

Parents own their children firm guidance and consistent discipline. It is frighteni ng for a youngster to feel that he is in charge of himself; it’s like being in a car w ithout brakes. The parent w ho says “No” when other parents say “Yes” sends a do uble message. He is also saying “ I love you, and I am ready to risk your anger b ecause I don’t want you to get into trouble”。

Parents owe their children some religious training. The fact that so many strang e worships are enjoying success is proof that children feel the need for something spiritual in their life.

Parents owe their children a comfortable feeling about their body, and enough i nformation about sex to balance the misinformation that they will surely receive fro m their friends.

Parents owe their children privacy and respect for their personal belongings. Thi s means not borrowing things without permission, not reading diaries and mail, not

looking through purses, pockets and drawers. If a mother feels that she must read her daughter’s diary to know what is going on, the communication between them must be pretty bad.

Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their live s. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others; it means being respectful to elders, to teachers, and to the law. The best way to teach suc h values is by example. A child who is lied to will think that it is right to steal. A youngster who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have a difficult time laughing and loving.

No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something. And if you give him your beliefs, he’ll have something of value to pass along to your grandchildren.

31. It can be inferred from the first paragraph that a child __C____ .

A. must develop himself in his own way

B. will be spoilt if he is given too many criticisms

C. will have less confidence if he has little self esteem

D. should be always compared with his brothers or sisters in intelligence

32. The refusal by the parents as to something not wise for a child implies __ C_____ .

A. his future hate to them

B. deep love for him

C. a risk for them

D. a warm hug

33. Which of the following is true? A

A. Children also have religious needs.

B. Children should have no privacy to their parents.

C. It’s better that a child can be in charge of himself.

D. Parents should not hold their child in arms after he has grown up.

34. If parents lie to their child, he will probably ___C____ .

A. refuse the truth

B. rely on other people

D. have a difficult time laughing and loving

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:

As we have seen, the focus of medical care in our society has been shifting fro m curing disease to preventing disease especially in terms of changing our many u nhealthy behaviors, such as poor eating habits, smoking, and failure to exercise. Th e line of thought involved in this shift can be pursued further. Imagine a person w ho is about the right weight , but does not eat very nutritious(有营养的)foods, w ho feels OK but exercises only occasionally, who goes to work every day, but is no t an outstanding worker, who drinks a few beers at home most nights but does no t drive while drunk , and who has no chest pains or abnormal blood counts, but sl eeps a lot and often feels tired. This person is not ill. He may not even be at risk for any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot healt hier.

The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who i s merely “ not ill” and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to th e body’s special needs. Both types have simply been called “well”。In recent years, howev er, some health specialists have begun to apply the terms “well” and “wellne ss” only to those who are actively striving to maintain and improve their health. Pe ople who are well are concerned with nutrition and exercise and they make a point of monitoring their body’s condition. Most important, perhaps, people who are well take active responsibility for all matters related to their health. Even people who h ave a physical disease or handicap (缺陷)may be “well,” in this new sense, if th ey make an effort to maintain the best possible health they can in the face of their physical limitations. “Wellness” may perhaps best be viewed not as a state that pe ople can achieve, but as an ideal that people can strive for. People who are well ar e likely to be better able to resist disease and to fight disease when it strikes. And by focusing attention on healthy ways of living, the concept of wellness can have

a beneficial impact on the ways in which people face the challenges of daily life.

36. Today medical care is placing more stress on __C_____ .

A. does not have any unhealthy living habits

B. does not have any physical handicaps

C. is able to handle his daily routines

D. is free from any kind of disease

39. According to the author, the true meaning of “wellness” is for people __B_ ____ .

A. to best satisfy their body’s special needs

B. to strive to maintain the best possible health

D. to keep a proper balance between work and leisure

40. According to what the author advocates, which of the following groups of p eople would be considered healthy? D

A. People who have strong muscles as well as slim figures.

B. People who are not presently experiencing any symptoms of disease

C. People who try to be as possible, regardless of their limitations.

D. People who can recover from illness even without seeking medical care.

Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage:

One of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to ad mit one’s mistakes. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I wa s wrong about that ” it is even harder to say “I was wrong, and you were right ab out that”。

I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made

a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain gro cery store in the neighborhood where I grew up, and he asked me if I remembere d the egg cartons. Then he related an incident and I began to remember vaguely t he incident he was describing.

I was about eight years old at that time, and I had gone into the store with my mother to do the weekly grocery shopping. On that particular day, I must have found my way to the dairy food department where the incident took place.

There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there was in i mpressive display of eggs in dozen and half dozen cartons. The cartons were stack

ed three or four feet high. I must have stopped in front of a display to admire the stacks. Just then a woman came by pushing her grocery car and knocked off the stacks of cartons. For some reason, I decided it was up to me to put the display b ack together, so I went to work.

The manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happene d. When he appeared, I was on my knees inspecting some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the culprit. H e severely reprimanded me and wanted me to pay for any broken eggs. I protested my innocence and tried to explain, but it did no good. Even though I quickly forg ot all about the incident, apparently the manager did not.

Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage:

In cities with rent control, the city government sets the maximum rent that a l andlord can charge for an apartment. Supporters of rent control argue that it prote cts people who are living in apartments. Their rent cannot increase; therefore, they are not in danger of losing their homes. However, the critics say that after a long time, rent control may have negative effects. Landlords know that they cannot incr ease their profits. Therefore, they invest in other businesses where they can increas e their profits. They do not invest in new buildings which would also be rent contr olled. As a result, new apartments are not built. Many people who need apartments cannot find any. According to the critics, the end result of rent control is a shorta ge of apartments in the city.

Some theorists argue that the minimum wage law can cause problems in the s ame way. The federal government sets the minimum that an employer must pay w orkers. The minimum helps people who generally look for unskilled, low paying job s. However, if the minimum is high, employers may hire fewer workers. They will r eplace workers with machinery. The price, which is the wage that employers must pay, increases. Therefore, other things being equal, the number of workers that em ployers want decreases. Thus, critics claim, an increase in the minimum wage may cause unemployment. Some poor people may find themselves without jobs instead of with jobs at the minimum wage.

Supporters of the minimum wage say that it helps people keep their dignity. Be cause of the law, workers cannot sell their services for less than the minimum. Furt hermore, employers cannot force workers to accept jobs at unfair wages.

Economic theory predicts the results of economic decisions such as decisions ab out farm production, rent control, and the minimum wage. The predictions may be correct only if “other things are equal”。Economists do not agree on some of the p redictions. They also do not agree on the value of different decisions. Some econo mists support a particular decision while others criticize it. Economists do agree, ho wever, that there are no simple answers to economic questions.

46. There is the possibility that setting maximum rent may___A_____.

A. cause a shortage of apartments

B. worry those who rent apartments as homes

C. increase the profits of landlords

D. encourage landlords to invest in building apartment

47. We can safely say that rent control ____C____.

A. will always benefit those who rent apartments

B. is unnecessary

C. will bring negative effects in the long run

D. is necessary under all circumstances

48. The problem of unemployment will arise _____A___.

A. if the minimum wage is set too high

B. if the minimum wage is set too low

C. if the workers are unskilled

D. if the maximum wage is set

49. The passage tells us _____B___.

A. the relationship between supply and demand

B. the possible results of government controls

C. the necessity of government control

D. the urgency of getting rid of government controls

50. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

Example 1:P52,03,36 Lynda and hundreds of young people like him____ the post of typist. 第A approach(方法,靠近,走近)B applied for C appealed to(吸引,恳求,上诉)D approved of (赞成) 题干研究: 1 考查词汇:Q1: like; post; typist. Post no bills. Post position of paid employment. Q2: Lynda and hundreds of young people like him 并列平行结构。 A growing number of unemployed Americans waste time browsing the estimated 4,000 to 5,000 online job sites, filling them with resum es and then waiting for replies. 选项研究: A approach(方法,靠近,走近) B applied for C appealed to(吸引,恳求,上诉) D approved of (赞成) 选项考查到:1 形近词;2 词义及语境,在此语境下只能选用某一选项。
