CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
In this chapter, an introduction to this thesis will be demonstrated involving backdrop of the study, significance of the research and integral structure of the thesis.
1.1 Background of the study
Pragmatic ambivalence is a common linguistic phenomenon and it is usually utilized by communicators as a communicative strategy. There are two mainly different definition of pragmatic ambivalence by different scholars. However, the author prefers the definition of pragmatic ambivalence defined by Yu Dongming (1997). Pragmatic ambivalence refers to the indefinite or indirect expressions speakers use in a particular context in order to convey certain illocutionary acts or meanings at the meantime. What the thesis mainly studies is the kind of ambivalent words, namely, the key point of the thesis is not to explore the ambivalence of fuzzy words itself in daily verbal communication but to discuss those words without fuzzy words, which contains indeterminable, and ambivalent illocutionary acts or illocutionary forces.
The speaker?s words containing pragmatic ambivalence generally include positive meanings such as thanking, request, suggestion and negative meanings such as warning, accusation, and irony. While the listener is threatened by speaker?s words including pragmatic ambivalence, he/she might choose to keep silent to maintain face or avoid conflicts. But in most cases, the listener chooses to make response to pragmatic ambivalent speech. One is to make response directly and the second is to make response by pragmatic ambivalence.
