Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

How Desert Animals Survive the Summer Heat and Dryness

Some desert animals can survive the summer heat and dryness because they are very unusual. The camel (骆驼), for example, can experience and bear an increase in the temperature of its body and its blood of 9℃without anything bad happening to it. In addition, it can drink a lot of water at one time; then store enough water in parts of its body to supply its needs for two weeks or more. The kangaroo rat (袋鼠), on the other hand, gets all the water it needs from water that it produces when it breathes. However, most animals need to maintain a fairly constant body temperature, and will die if it rises more than 5℃. Therefore, they need to find some way to stay away from the heat of the summer sun. Nor can many animals either store or produce water in

their bodies, as the camel and kangaroo rat can. So they must find ways to keep their bodies from losing water because of the heat. Because very few desert animals can survive the high temperature of a typical summer's day, most of them are active only in the night. Only after the sun has set does the desert come fully to life. The night is relatively cool, and the darkness provides protection, not only from the sun, but also from other animals and from the birds. So the coming of darkness is the signal for the large majority of animals and insects to start again their search for water and food. When morning comes, most of them seek shelter again: many go underground; nearly all find some dark and cool place where they can keep away from the sun's heat.

For many species of insects, living in the desert is easier than for animals. Like many desert plants, they have a waterproof skin which prevents water loss because of the high temperature. In addition, some species spend all or most of their life below ground. Here, for most of the year at least, there is some moisture, and it is generally cooler than on the surface. In the case of ants, only adults leave the underground nests, and they do so only to gather food or to defend the nest against attack.

Compared with other desert animals, the camel can bear ______.

A) a very low body temperature

B) only a little change in body temperature

C) a big increase in body temperature

D) a constant change in body temperature

The kangaroo rat is different from other animals in that _______.

A) it can produce water through breathing

B) it can store water in parts of its body

C) it can maintain different body temperatures

D) it can drink a lot of water at a time

Why is the desert full of activity in summer nights?

A) Because it is cooler and safer for most animals.

B) Because animals can find food in the dark.

C) Because it is easy to find water at night.

D) Because animals cannot sleep at night.

Why is it easy for many species of insects to live in the desert?

A) Because it is not difficult for them to survive there.

B) Because they are not afraid of the heat.

C) Because it is not difficult for them to find food there.

D) Because they have a waterproof skin.

Most insects live below the ground because _________.

A) it is easy for them to build nests there

B) it is easy to find water there

C) it is cooler there than on the surface

D) it is easier to build nests there

Passage One

Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.

Last week I visited one of my old neighborhoods in Washington D.C. I had not been there for twenty years and as I walked along the street, my mind was flooded by memories of the past. I saw the old apartment building where I had lived and the playground where I had played. As I viewed these once familiar surroundings, images of myself as a child there came to mind. However, what I saw and what I remembered were not the same. I sadly realized that the best memories are those left untouched.

My old apartment building, as I remember, was bright and alive. It was more than just a place to live. It was a movie house, a space station, or whatever my young mind could imagine. I would steal away with my friends and play in the basement. This was always exciting because it was so cool and dark, and there were so many things there to hide among. There was a small river in the back of the building. We would go there to lie in the shade of trees and enjoy ourselves. However, what I saw was completely different. The apartment building was now in disrepair. What was once more than a place to live looked hardly worth living in. The windows were all broken. The once clean walls were covered with dirty marks. The river was hardly recognizable(可认出的). The water was polluted(污染)and the trees and flowers were all dead. The once sweet smelling river now smelled terrible. It was really heartbreaking to see all this.

I do not regret having seen my old neighborhood. However, I do not think my innocent childhood memories can ever be the same. I suppose it is true when they say, "You can never go home again."

In the first two paragraphs of the passage the writer tries to tell us that ________.

A) he had lived in Washington D.C. for twenty years

B) he was very imaginative when he was a child

C) he had had fond memories of his old neighborhood

D) he had come from a very poor neighborhood

The writer, as a child, was very fond of playing in the basement because ________.

A) it was bright and alive

B) it contained a movie house and a space station

C) it was ideal for playing hide-and-seek.

D) it was surrounded by trees and flowers

How did the writer feel when he visited his old neighborhood in Washington D.C.?

A) Greatly surprised. B) Very regretful.

C) Quite excited. D) Very sad.

On his visit to his hometown, the writer found the old apartment building ________.

A) seemed unfit to live in B) had been repaired

C) could hardly be recognized D) looked dirty and smelt horrible

"You can never go home again" in the last sentence of this passage means that ________.

A) one should never revisit his hometown after many years of absence

B) one will never find his hometown the same as it was in his childhood memory

C) a visit to one's hometown will bring back one's fond memories of home

D) a visit to one's hometown will bring back many sad memories

Passage Two

Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.

Who coined the term personal computer? The Oxford English Dictionary says Byte magazine used it first, in its May 1976 issue. But Yale Law School librarian Fred Shapiro decided to do some digging on his own--with help from JSTOR, an online electronic database for academic (学术的) journals. JSTOR's arts and sciences archive (档案) offers scans of 5 million pages from 117 journals, some dating back 150 years. Using character-recognition software, JSTOR creates searchable files for each document (文件), allowing full-text searches across 15 academic fields. While searching for the origin of personal computer, Shapiro uncovered several competing claims. Stewart Brand, founder of Whole Earth Catalog, says on his Web site that he first referred to a "personal computer" in a 1974 book; and GUI pioneer Alan Kay is said to have used the term in a paper published in 1972.

But a search on JSTOR's general science archive turned up what Shapiro says is the earliest recorded use of personal computer, in the October 4, 1968, issue of Science. The issue contains a Hewlett-Packard advertisement for its new HP 9100A. "The new Hewlett-Packard 9100A personal computer," the advertisement says, is "ready, will ing and able …to relieve you of waiting to get on the big computer." The $4,900 device -- a desktop scientific calculator equipped with magnetic cards-doesn't seem like much of a computer nowadays. And at 40 pounds, it wasn't very personal, either. But according to Shapiro, it was the first device to be called a personal computer.

The term "personal computer" first appeared ________.

A) in Byte magazine

B) in a Hewlett-Packard ad in Science

C) in a 1974 book

D) in a paper published by Alan Kay

What is JSTOR?

A) It is an online database. B) It is an academic journal.

C) It is a kind of computer software. D) It is a research organization.

Shapiro succeeded in his search for the origin of the term personal computer by ________.

A) looking into the Oxford English Dictionary

B) digging into magazines that are more than 150 years old

C) scanning JSTOR's general science archive on line

D) focusing on academic journals such as Science

With a HP 9100A, according to the Hewlett-Packard advertisement, you ________.

A) can easily get on the big computer.

B) don't have to get on the big computer

C) can save a lot of money.

D) will be willing and ready to d o scientific work

What do we learn from the passage about the first device that was called a personal computer?

A) It looked very different from the PC we know today.

B) It was small, light and easy to carry around.

C) It was as efficient as a big computer.

2018年英语六级考试试题及答案

2018年英语六级考试试题及答案 PartⅠWriting 1.【题干】For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay on the importance of building trust between business and consumers. You can cite examples to illustrate your views. 150-200 words. 【答案】Without a doubt, a mutually-trusted relation between businesses and consumers is important for the two parties. First of all, though business is objective, cooperation is relatively subjective. Only when a consumer believe in what a businessman is selling, he or she could decide to buy something from the man. In reality, I have seen too many consumers purchase or refuse one commodity only because they like or dislike the salesman who they meet, especially when they are in a bad mood. Secondly, when one businessman consider that a customer trusts him, he would feel honored and satisfied thereby giving more preference to the customer. Naturally, when one businessman offers the best quality goods and the best prices to a customer, the customer has no excuse to refuse the businessman. Once such relation informed, both the two parties gain profit from it Hence, both businesses and consumers should work together to form a reciprocal relation. PartⅢReading Section A

For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. In 1985 when a Japan Air Lines (JAL) jet crashed, its president, Yasumoto Takagi, called each victim’s family to apologize, and then promptly resigned. And in 1987, when a subsidiary of Toshiba sole sensitive military technology to the former Soviet Union, the chairman of Toshiba gave up his post. These executive actions, which Toshiba calls “the highest form of apology,”may seem bizarre to US managers. No one at Boeing resigned after the JAL crash, which may have been caused by a faulty Boeing repair. The difference between the two business cultures centers around different definitions of delegation. While US executives give both responsibility and authority to their employees, Japanese executives delegate only authority—the responsibility is still theirs. Although the subsidiary that sold the sensitive technology to the Soviets had its own management, the Toshiba top executives said they “must take personal responsibility for not creating an atmosphere throughout the Toshiba group that would make such activity unthinkable, even in an independently run subsidiary.” Such acceptance of community responsibility is not unique to businesses in Japan. School principals in Japan have resigned when their students committed major crimes after school hours. Even if they do not quit, Japanese executives will often accept primary responsibility in other ways, such as taking the first pay cut when a company gets into financial trouble. Such personal sacrifices, even if they are largely symbolic, help to create the sense of community and employee loyalty that is crucial to the Japanese way of doing business. Harvard Business School professor George Lodge calls the ritual acceptance of blame “almost a feudal (封建的) way of purging (清除) the community of dishonor,”and to some in the United States, such resignations look cowardly. However, in an era in which both business and governmental leaders seem particularly good at evading responsibility, many US managers would probably welcome an infusion (灌输) of the Japanese sense of responsibility, If, for instance,
