Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1The Kite Runner

The Kite Runner is the first novel written by the Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini in 2003. It vividly explains to the readers life in Afghanistan over the past 30 years (from 1963 to 2001).

Amir, one of the main character of the novel, was born in 1963 in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, and was the son of a wealthy family. His father was Pushtun, a privileged group in Afghanistan, with a dominant position in Afghan society. Hassan, who was portrayed as the son of Amir’s family’s servant Ali, was Hazara, regarded as lower class citizens by the ruling Pushtun. As children, Amir and Hassan were good friends. Hassan and Amir worked together during kite competitions. Amir loved to write stories but his father hoped that he would play sports and actively encouraged him. The friend of Amir’s father Rahim Khan became Amir’s friend. In the community, there was also a Pushtun child Assef, who admired Adolf Hitler. He came into conflict with Amir and Hassan. During the discussion, Hassan used a slingshot to protect Amir. In 1975, Amir won the Kite championship by cutting down several kites. Hassan found the opponents’ kites. When Hassan was on his way back, he was stopped by Assef and his friends. Assef asked Hassan to give him the kite and Hassan refused, so he sexually assaulted Hassan. Amir watched Hassan being assaulted in a dark alley but he didn’t have the courage to save Hassan, instead he ran away. After this event, Amir felt extremely ashamed and was unable to face Hassan and asked his father to fire Ali and Hassan, but his father refused. So on the evening of 13th birthday, Amir claimed that Hassan had stolen his birthday present. Hassan admitted stealing and this resulted in Ali and Hassan moving out of the house. When the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979, Amir and his father fled to Pakistan. Later, Amir and his
