第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A

Do you start your day by making a list of all you have to complete, from walking the dog and washing the clothes, to phoning a relative or checking your e-mails? Do you-always takea list with you to the supermarket? Do you write down all the steps you needto see a big project through?

I fyou’re a natural list maker you can consider this habit asagood thing to do. Here are some reasons:

Give your memory a kick: Even if you pride yourself on remembering all you need to complete, i t’s only human t o forget every oncein a while. A to-do list is a handy reminder.

Help you stay in themoment: It sounds surprising, but true. Trying to mentally keep track of the things weighing on yourmind can make it tougher to concentrate on the activity at hand.

Calm anxiety: Instead of carrying around a terrible nervousness that you’ve forgotten to take care of a chore, keeping an up-to-date list can help relieve that kind of stress.

:Most of us are likely to put off until tomorrow what we can do today, but keeping a list helps to keep this natural impulse at bay. Thinking about what has to be done ahead of time is a good way to prevent us from falling behind schedule.

Prioritize (划分优先顺序):Seeing everything we want to take-care of allows us to prioritize the most time to the more important tasks. On the other hand, not having a to-do list makes it possible for us to spend too much time on trivial items.

Increase happiness: You will feel very happy each time you check off a task you have completed on your list. Studies show that reaching your goal actually releases feel-good chemical in your brain that increases happiness.

“Get yourself up and make something of yourself, buddy!” Though my mother has passed away, her words are as clear in my head today as when I was a boy.

“Christ!” I said, “I ha ve made、something of myself. I want to sleep late as I like.”

“If there is one thing I can’t stand, it’s a quitter.” Her voice in my head is more powerful than my will to refuse, so I pull myself from bed.

Before I was out of primary school, mother could see I lacked the giftsfor either making millions or winning the love of crowds. So she began pushingme towardsworkingwith words. Words ran in her family. There seemed tobe a word gene thatpassed down from her mother’s grandfather. The greatest proof was my mother’s firstcousin Edwin. He wasthemanaging editorof the New York Times and had gained a name in his career:

In 1947 I graduated from Johns Hopkins and applied for a job with the Baltimore Sun as a police reporter. It paid $30 aweek. When Icomplained wage was shameful fora learned man, mother refused to sympathize. “If you work hard at this job,” she said .”maybe you can make something of it.”

After a while, Iwas asked to cover diplomats (外交官)at various African embassies. Then, seven years later I was arranged by the Sun to cover theWhite House, a task thatwas as close to heaven as a journalist could get. However, whatever achievementof mine only seemed insignificant in her eyes. Uncle Edwin’s success was really annoying during my early yearsas a reporter. What a thrill, I thought.

My elder brother Steve, in the absence of my father who died when I was six, gave me important lessons in values that helped me grow into an adult.

For instance, Steve taught me to face the results of my behavior. Once when I returned in tears from a Saturday baseball game, it was Steve who took the time to ask me what had happened. When I explained that my baseball had soared through Mrs. Holt’s basement window, breaking the glass with a “Bang!”,Steve encouraged me to confess (认错)to her. After all, I should have been playing in the park down Fifth Street and not in the path between buildings. Although my knees knocked as I explained to Mrs. Holt, I offered to pay for the window from my pocket money if she would return my ball. I also learned from Steve that personal property is a sacred (神圣的)thing. After I found a shiny silver pen in my fifth-grade classroom,Iwanted to keep it, but Steve explained that it might be important to someone else in spite of the fact that it had little value. He reminded me of how muchI’d hate to lose to someone else the small dog my fathercarved from a piece of cheap wood, I returned the pen to my teacher, Mrs. Davide, and still remembered the smell of her perfume (香水)as she patted me on the shoulder.

Yet of all the instructions Steve gave me, his respect for life is the mostvivid in my mind. When I was twelve I killed an old brown sparrow(麻雀)in the yard with aBB gun. Excited with my accuracy, I screamed to Steve to come from the house to take a look. I shall never forget the wayhe stood for a long moment and stared at the bird on the ground. Then in a quiet, dead voice, he asked, “Did it hurtyou first,Mark?” I didn’t know what to answer. He continued with his eyes firm, “The only time you should even think of hurting a living thing is whether it hurts you first. And then you think a long, long tim e.” Ireally felt terrible then, but thatmoment stands out as the most important lesson my brother taught me.,
