Forget Cyclists, Pedestrians are RealDanger

We are having a debate aboutthis topic. Here are some letters from our readers.

■ Yes, many cyclists behavedangerously. Many drivers are disrespectful of cyclists. But pedestrians areprobably the worse offenders.

People of all ages happily walkalong the pavement with eyes and hands glued to the mobile phone, quite unawareof what is going on around them. They may even do the same thing while crossinga road at a pedestrian crossing or elsewhere. The rest of us have to evade themor just stand still to wait for the unavoidable collision.

The real problem is that somepedestrians seem to be, at least for the moment, in worlds of their own thatare, to them, much more important than the welfare of others.

—Michael Horan

■ I loved the letter from BobBrooks about cyclists . I am afraid they seem to think theyown the roads.

I was walking acrossAltrincharn Road one morning when a cyclist went round me and on being askedwhat he was doing he shouted at me.

The government built a cyclelane on the road but it is hardly used.

The police do nothing. What alaugh they are!

The cyclists should all have tobe made to use the cycle lanes and wear helmets, fluorescent jacketand tights at night and in the morning. They should pay some sort of tax and befined for not wearing them.

—Carol Harvey

■ Cyclists jump on and offpavements , ride at speed along the pavements, and think they have a special right to go through traffic lights when they areon red.

I was almost knocked down recentlyby a cyclist riding on the pavement when there was a cycle lane right next tohim.

Other road users, includinghorse riders, manage to obey the rules so why not cyclists?

It’s about time they had to beregistered and insured, so when they do hit a pedestrian or a vehicle, or causean accident, at least they can be traced and there might be anopportunity to claim.

—JML

The traditional tent cities at festivalssuch as Glastonbury may never be the same again. In a victory of green businessthat is certain to appeal to

Major festivals such asGlastonbury throw away some 10,000 abandoned tents at the end of events eachyear. For his final year project at the University of the West of England,James Dunlop came up with a material that can be recycled. And to cope with theBritish summer, the cardboard has been made waterproof.

Taking inspiration from aJapanese architect, who has used cardboard to make big buildings includingchurches, Mr. Dunlop used cardboard material for his tents, which he calledMyhabs.

The design won an award at theannual New Designers Exhibition after Mr. Dunlop graduated from his productdesign degree and he decided to try to turn it into a business.

To raise money for the idea, hetoured the City’s private companies which fund new businesses and found asupporter in the finance group Mint. He introduced his idea to four of Mint’s directorsand w on their support. Mint has committed around £500,000 to MyHab and taken ashare of 30 per cent in Mr. Dunlop’s business. The first Myhabs should betested at festivals this summer, before being marketed fully next year.

Mr. Dunlop said that thedesign, which accommodates two people, could have other uses, such as fordisaster relief and housing for the London Olympics.

For music events, the cardboardhouses will be ordered online and put up at the sites by the Myhab team beforethe festival-goers arrive and removed by the company afterwards. They can bepersonalized and the company will offer reductions on the expense if peopleagree to sell exterior advertising space.

The biggest festivals attracttens of thousands of participants, with Glastonhury having some 150,000 eachyear. Altogether there are around 100 annual music festivals where people campin the UK. The events are becoming increasingly environmentally conscious.

Sports accounts for a growing amount ofincome made on the sales of commercial time by television companies. Manytelevision companies have used sports to attract views from particular sectionsof the general public, and then they have sold audiences to advertisers.

An attraction of sportsprograms for the major U.S. media company is that events are often held onSaturday and Sunday afternoons — the slowest time periods of the week for generaltelevision viewing. Sport events are the most popular weekend programs, especially among male viewers who may not watch much television at other timesduring the week. This means the television networks are able to selladvertising time at relatively high prices during what normally would be deadtime for programming. Media corporations also use sports to attract commercialsponsors that might take their advertising dollars elsewhere if televisionstations did not report certain sports. The people in the advertisingdepartments of major corporations realize that sports attract male viewers. They also realize that most business travelers are men and that many men makefamily decisions on the purchases of computers, cars and life insurance.

Golf and tennis are specialcases for television programming. These sports attract few viewers, and theratings areunusually low. However, the audience for these sports is attractive to certainadvertisers. It is made up of people from the highest income groups in theUnited States, including many lawyers and

business managers. This is whytelevision reporting of golf and tennis is sponsored by companies sellinghigh-priced cars, business and personal computers, and holiday trips. This isalso why the networks continue to carry these programs regardless of lowratings. Advertisers are willing to pay high fees to reach high-incomeconsumers and those managers who make decisions to buy thousands of”company cars” and computers. With such viewers, these programs don’tneed high rating s to stay on the air.

(1)Why would weekend afternoons become dead time without sport programs?

A . Because there would be few viewers.

B . Because the advertisers would be off work.

C . Because television programs would go slowly.

D . Because viewers would pay less for watching television.

(2)In many families, men make decisions on .

A . holiday trips

B . sports viewing

C . television shopping

D . expensive purchases

(3)Why are the ratings not important for golf and tennis programs?

A . Because their advertisers are carmakers.

B . Because their viewers are attracted by sports.

C . Because their advertisers target at rich people.

D . Because their viewers can afford expensive cars.

(4)What is the passage mainly about?

A . Television ratings are determined by male viewers.

B . Rich viewers contribute most to television companies.

C . Sports are gaining importance in advertising on television.

D . Commercial advertisers are the major sponsors of

sport events

A little girl, less than two, was pushing her stroller (婴儿车) across the road. It was Sunday morning and traffic was not heavy. I stopped my car at once and ran toward her. This little girl knew enough to run from a stranger. I tried to catch her in order that I could get her out of the road. Suddenly her father came running down a hill across the road from where I had parked my car. He ran right to her and caught her up, saying “bad girl” to her. I picked up the stroller and gave it to him. The father grabbed (抓住) the stroller and walked toward where he came from without a word. I went back and sat in my car for a few minutes with my son. My hands were shaking and tears were about to run out of my eyes. “Do you feel cold, Mom?” asked my son. I just shook my head. After this happened, I thought about how thankful I was. Even though the father didn’t say thank you, I feel that I did something good. Doing something for someone else is pleasing, even when it’s only a matter of being in the right place at the right time. I didn’t really “save” her, but I feel like it was important that I happened to be there. It is sad that I was the only one who stopped. It really made me a little disappointed that no one else stopped to help. 21.When the author saw the little girl, ________. A.the girl had lost her way B.she was driving to work in a hurry

They aren't fools as you think sometimes! Our parents seem to know what is the best for us. Remember: to be honest is the best way. Good luck, Rebecca 1.
