Use your domestic plan when you travel in over 100 countries for $10 a day. Add International Day Pass to your existing plan before you go, then follow these tips to help manage costs and make the most of your travels:

How it works

While abroad, if you make or accept a call, listen to a voicemail, send a text, or use data, you will be automatically charged $10 for 24-hour access to your domestic plan. During that period you can:

◆Use your domestic plan data to email, post on social media, translate languages and more.

◆Make unlimited calls to countries included in International Day Pass.

◆Send unlimited texts to the world.

How to help manage costs

◆If you are outside of a 24-hour access period and you don’t w ant to use your phone, turn off data roaming (漫游) to avoid being charged $10 accidentally.

◆Save data by connecting Wi-Fi, especially if you download, or send and receive large files.

Almost 50 years ago, three astronauts were sent to the moon in the Command Module Columbia. Their job was to gather information about the moon. The trip to the moon was called Apollo 11 in 1969. The astronauts were Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. They walked on the moon, but no one had done that before. The Command Module Columbia brought them home safely.

Today, the spacecraft lives in the Smithsonian, which is a group of museums in Washington. The Smithsonian has over 150 million pieces from the country’s past and present on spacecrafts, among which are 455 artifacts from the Apollo 11 mission.

Lisa Young works at the Air and Space Museum. She wants these pieces to be around for many years and she is working on something special. She is getting the Command Module Columbia ready for a journey. It is going across the United States and will stop in four cities. This is the first time the Command Module Columbia has moved in over 40 years. “Many people don’t get a chance to come to the Smithsonian and we want more people to know about space,” said Lisa Young.

Moving the Command Module Columbia is a completely different puzzle. It weighs 9,000 pounds and can’t be covered. Therefore, the Command Module Columbia rides in a climate-controlled container. The team uses a custom-built(定制的)stand that can move the spacecraft without touching it. A specially fitted “raincoat” then covers it to keep visitors at a distance.

Young wants to keep the Command Module Columbia safe. But she also wants as many people as possible to see it. The spacecraft is now in Houston. It will travel to three other cities. In 2020, it will return home to the Air and Space Museum.

58.What can we infer about the three astronauts from the text?

A. They were the first to walk on the moon.

B. They found unknown things about space.

C. They collected artifacts for the Smithsonian.

D. They made the Command Module Columbia.

59.Why does Lisa plan the trip for the Command Module Columbia?

A. To expect people to give advice about space.

B. To encourage people to learn about space.

C. To help it collect artifacts.

D. To keep it safe.

60.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. The introduction of Apollo 11

B. A future plan about the Smithsonian

C. The popularity of the Air and Space Museum

D.A special trip for the Command Module Columbia

A new study, published in Nature Communications, finds forests may have a bigger cooling effect on climate than we thought and that without them, the world may be heating up more quickly than expected.

Forests emit(释放)gases that can react and combine with other gases in the atmosphere. Some of these, called biogenic volatile organic compounds(生物挥发性有机化合物), affect the formation of other compounds like methane, the presence of which can influence atmospheric temperature.

For their study, an international team of researchers, led by the University of Leeds in the UK, simulated(模拟)different forest conditions and calculated different warming and cooling effects through computer modeling. They discovered that while trees emitted gases that could warm the atmosphere, gases that had a cooling effect had a greater effect. As forests were cleared, emissions of these cooling reactive gases were reduced. The researchers figured the loss of this function might contribute 14% towards deforestation(砍伐森林)—caused global warming.

According to the researchers, this study is the first thorough analysis of the climate effects of non-CO2 reactive gases emitted by forests. “Most previous assessments on the climate effects of deforestation have focused on the amount of carbon dioxide that will be emitted, or changes of the way the land surface exchanges energy and water with the atmosphere,” said lead author Catherine Scott of the University of Leeds. “But as well as taking in carbon dioxide and giving out oxygen, trees emit other gases that take part in complex chemical reactions in the atmosphere and there’re possible results of reducing these ga ses.”

The scientists write that effective climate policies will require a “thorough understanding” of the relationship between land-use change like deforestation and climate, and urge more research to be done toward this goal.

“By understanding these compl ex effects, we now know more about how forests are affecting our climate, and we can see

a clearer picture of the effects of deforestation,” Scott said.

61.What can we know about reactive gases given out by forests according to the study?

A. They’re coolin g the land surface directly.

B. Their warming effects are relatively greater.

C. They can balance the atmospheric temperature.

D. Their cooling effects are relatively more obvious.

62.What is Catherine Scott trying to express in Paragraph 4?

A. The process of their research on forests.

B. Greater positive effects of forests on climate.

C. Problems with previous studies on deforestation.

D. Harmful effects of carbon dioxide on global warming.

63.What does the underlined part “this goal” in Paragrap h 5 refer to?

A. Learning how climate is linked to land-use change well.

B. Controlling effects of deforestation on climate.

C. Taking advantage of forests for our climate.

D. Making climate policies more effective.

64.What is the text mainly about?

A. Forests emit reactive gases that are good for human health.

B. Forests work mainly by absorbing carbon dioxide.

C. Forests play a role in complex chemical reactions.

D. Forests have another power to protect climate.

One of the ways that we learn language has been studying in a classroom. I planned to teach English when I graduated from college. I continued working for a company in Buffalo and used my time off to apply for a position as an English teacher.

Auburn’s Central High School was badly in need of a seventh-grade English teacher. Then, in November 1969, my opportunity came and I began to teach seventh graders English.

I taught grammar lessons in the first week. I found that there were some students who wanted to learn, but there were some who didn’t. After a week, I gave them a test covering what the students had learned. David, one of my students, had been ill for the week and arrived in time to take the test on Friday. He wasn’t worried about taking the test, even though he was absent when I taugh t the week’s lessons. I was surprised that he got good grades.

One day I had a discussion with an eighth-grade English teacher. Somehow our conversation was drawn into a discussion about spelling. She told me that in Auburn School district there were no contestants(参赛者)in the annual contest held in Syracuse in previous years. David was one of the four students who wished to compete in that year’s Spelling Bee. I spent several weeks coaching my spellers, which was done at each of the contestants’ homes. Whi le we were studying the words to be learned, and I surveyed the words to be given, I found one word that I had never seen before. I pronounced “an-ka-voy”, giving it to the eighth graders in our group. David didn’t recognize the word from my pronunciation. He asked to see the word that he was supposed to spell out. It was “anchovy”. Being of Italian-American ancestry(血统), I was familiar with anchovy, and it is a kind of little fish often baked with pizza, but I had never seen the word “anchovy” in print.

In spring, I traveled with my contestants and their parents to a Syracuse high school where the contest was being conducted. All the contestants had to take a written test in the morning to qualify. Unfortunately, none of them qualified when the oral quiz was held in the afternoon.

Because of David’s talent for learning quickly, I followed his progress after he continued his education through the Auburn School system. As David became elder, even after he graduated from high school, he consulted me about English-related problems from time to time.

After high school, David attended college, got married and became a teacher in Arizona. As I began writing my monthly column in the magazine, I shared my writing with him as I did with all of my other e-mail contacts.

Recently, David offered to give me some suggestions on writing some of my future columns. He said, “There are thousands of similar examples which exist in texting.” He took the current everyday “How R U” as an appropriate example. He said, “Never has there been a season in which spelling words can be so critical... all thanks to the computer.”

David, like many other teachers whom I have spoken to, emphasized that many writers lack the ability to construct proper sentences. I, as well as David and others, complain how many so-called professionals too often write in broken sentences.

I hope there are many other teachers out there, who will admit that they also learn various things about our language from their students. I learn that many of us teachers are appreciated by those students who they teach.

Recently, David made this solemn(郑重的)declaration to me, “Your work as a seventh-grade teacher helped me develop my ability to write and communicate...You have been that deep influence that affected me far more than you will ever know in other areas such as language, and on the personal level as a child, and this continues to the very hour.”

Maybe other former students also admire their past teachers in a similar way. This is another way that all of us can “watch o ur language”.

About one in nine people still suffer from hunger around the world, and most of them live in developing countries. Fortunately, the world’s forests have great potential to improve their nutrition and ensure their livelihoods. However, forests’ contribution to relieving hunger and improving nutrition has been somewhat overlooked. The following are some ways that forests can benefit food security.

Firstly, tree foods tend to contain a large amount of vitamins, proteins, and other nutrients and are associated with more diverse diets. For instance, the iron content of dried seeds of some nuts is comparable with, or even higher than that of chicken meat. Trees in home gardens increase fruit and vegetable consumption.

Secondly, wild meat, fish, and insects are also important forest food sources. Insects are an especially cheap, abundant source of protein and fat. Caterpillars(毛毛虫)are great for vitamins and minerals. In some areas, many forests and tree-based farms are managed by local communities that provide a large supply of eatable insects.

Thirdly, forests are also essential for firewood and charcoal. In developing countries, a large number of people still use wood fuel for cooking and heating. The high prices for other energy sources suggest this situation is unlikely to change for some time. Access to cooking fuel provides people with more flexibility in what they can eat, including more nutritious foods that require more energy to cook.

Lastly, trees offer a large quantity of ecological services. For instance, they support bees and other pollinators(授粉者), which are essential for crop production. They also provide animal fodder(草料)that enables communities to produce meat and milk, and protect streams and lakes as habitat for fish.

Although forests are not a cure-all for global hunger, they play a vital role in complementing crops produced on farms. This is especially important when the staple food supply is weakened by droughts, armed conflicts, or other crises. Crop production tends to be affected greatly by extreme weather events, which may occur more frequently under climate change. Tree-based farming can adapt far better to such incidents. During periods of food shortage caused by such events, forest foods can provide a vital safety net, especially for the poorest households.

This forest-farm link also means that the loss and degradation(退化)of forests worsens the problem of food insecurity. Losing forests endangers “ecological services” such as a clean water supply, which is important for crop and livestock production. Managing landscapes on a multi-functional basis that combines food production, the maintenance of ecosystem

第五部分书面表达(满分25分)

Should parents leave all of their money to children and let them live a carefree life without even the necessity of earning money to support themselves? Here are two pieces of news about two celebrities:

Bill Gates: Bill Gates has promised to give all of his $ 58 billion fortune to charity he has set up with his wife, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which funds health and education projects around the world. He wanted to make a positive contribution to the world.

Zuckerberg: We will give 99% of our Facebook shares during our lives to advance human potential and promote equality. We know this is a small contribution compared to all the resources and talents of those already working on these issues. But we want to do what we can, working alongside many others.

Many world-famous wealthy businessmen choose to donate almost all of their possessions to the charity instead of leaving their fortune to their children. In their opinion, it is better to develop the quality of independence of their children, making them possess the competence of living by themselves.
