Jackie Chan was sick and tired of trying to cross over into American movies. The martial arts wonder and ex-Bruce Lee stuntman(特技替身演员) was a superstar in China, but his attempts at going Hollywood in films like Big Brawl (1980), The Cannonball Run (1981), and The Protector (1985) barely impressed American audiences. ＂Nobody knew who this little Chinese guy was that spoke no English,＂Chan told Yahoo Entertainment during a recent Role Recall interview. ＂I was disappointed and thought, ‘No more American market.’＂

In the late 1990s, his manager begged him to make one more go at it: There was this project called Rush Hour, in which Chan would play a Hong Kong police inspector who teams up with a wise-cracking LAPD detective (Chris Tucker) to rescue a Chinese politician’s kidnapped daughter. Chan agreed to do the 1998 action comedy directed by Brett Ratner in large part because it allowed him to speak in broken English.

After Chan wrapped Rush Hour, he told his manager he would never do another film like it again. ＂They don’t allow me to do my own style of action. The English, I’m not good. Chris Tucker’s English, I don’t understand.＂Chan said.

He sat there dumbfounded(惊呆了的) as moviegoers laughed through the premiere(首映). ＂Why are they laughing? I just don’t understand,＂he thought.

So Chan returned to Asia to work once again in his home region, when he got the call: Rush Hour was a massive hit. Released in Sept. 1998, it earned $141 million at the U.S. box office and $244 million worldwide.

It also leads to two sequels(续集)… and two more hits: 2001’s Rush Hour 2, Chan’s highest grossing(总收入) of all time ($226 million in the U.S., $347 million worldwide) and 2007’s Rush Hour 3 ($140 million in the U.S., $258 million worldwide).

Flat Holm, a small island in Britain’s Bristol Channel, has no permanent residents and minimal infrastructure(设施). The pretty land mass is now, however, becoming increasingly popular with tourists wishing to explore th e rural landscape and view the island’s seabird colonies.

Though this is welcome news, meeting the island’s growing energy needs without ruining its environment poses a challenge. Flat Holm team leader Natalie Taylor says, ＂As we promote the island more and we get more visitors here, there’s going to be a lot more demand for electricity so it’s really important that we’ve got a really high functioning system that can provide for those people. From an environmental point of view, we want to reduce the use of diesel(柴油) generators so that we can have as small ecological footprints as possible.＂While the Cardiff Council, which oversees the island, considered traditional solar and hydroelectricity, it was

manager Gareth Harcombe, the officials were seeking a portable option that could be moved if the site was needed for another purpose.

Fortunately, the UK-based company Renovagen had the perfect solution. A small panel can provide 11kW of power within two minutes. A more extensive version, unrolled from a shipping container, can yield 300kW of electricity in less than an hour.

The solar panel ＂carpets＂, laid on the island in early October, are being used to provide electricity to its sole pub and lighthouse. The Cardiff Council also plans to use them to charge two Nissan e-NV200 electric vehicles in the future.

In addition to providing power to remote islands like Flat Holm, Hingley hopes the Rapid Roll technology will be useful in areas affected by natural disasters. A good example is Puerto Rico, where most residents have been without electricity since Hurricane Maria destroyed the power lines in late September.

It’s common knowledge that sleep problems can be caused by things such as stress, anxiety, or even using a smartphone before bedtime. But recently, a team of researchers discovered that genes could also be a cause of sleepless nights.

The scientists, from Rockefeller University in New York, US, found that delayed sleep phase disorder( DSPD, 睡眠相位后移综合症), a condition that affects one’s sleeping patterns, is passed down via a mutated(突变的) gene. DSPD sufferers wake up later and go to bed later than the average person. To come to their conclusion, the team studied a 46-year-old woman who is only usually able to fall asleep at 2 or 3 in the morning. It was discovered that the woman’s body produces the hormone that h elps her sleep at night up to 7 hours later than regular sleepers. The scientists found this was caused by a mutation in one of the woman’s genes, one that helps regulate the ＂body clock＂.

Some of the woman’s family members were also found to share the sam e mutation — and the same sleeping problems — leading the scientists to believe that sleep troubles are passed down through the generations.

However, having this mutation doesn’t mean you automatically have sleep problems. The team also found two people who had the mutation but reported no problems with their sleep.

But while this is an interesting discovery, it offers no help to those who can’t fall asleep at night — although there are a few things you could try to help you sleep earlier.

BBC journalist Michael Mosley produced a TV documentary in May in which he talked about his battle with insomnia(失眠) and the techniques he used. ＂I avoid social media for at least an hour before bed, I do mindfulness exercises, and if I wake up in the middle of the night, I read a book for an hour or so,＂he wrote in an article for the Radio Times.

Today, my friends or I went on our trip to People’s Park, that we had a good time. We arrived at park later because of the traffic jam. First, we rode the roller coaster(过山车), which was really excited. After lunch, we went on the water rides —my most favorite! Although we got so wet, we still feel very delighted.
