Much meaning can be conveyed, clearly, with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.

Do you have such kind of experience? In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not too long. And if he is sensing that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable.

The same is in daily life. If you are looked at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is anything wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry toward other’s stare at you that way. Eyes do speak, right?

Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. But things are different when it comes to stare at the opposite sex. If a man glances at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to avert his gaze, his intentions are obvious. That is, he wishes to attract her attention, to make her understand that he is admiring her.

However, the normal eye contact for two people engaged in conversation is that the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time; in order to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking, to tell him that he is attentive.

If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking, as if he tries to dominate (镇住,控制)you, you will feel disconcerted. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim, since he believes the false ideas that to look straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication.

In fact, continuous eye contact is confined to lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each other tenderly for a long time, to show affection that words cannot express.

Evidently, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and specific situation.

Rachael lives in Wisconsin and has lived there all her life. She is just an average girl; at first when you are around her, she seems to be very shy. If you get to know her, she’ll start to open up but always keep things to herself.

Sports are something that keeps her going, a way to release stress. Usually, you will see Rachael out with friends or just sitting down reading a good book. She takes pride in the fact that she can read a whole book in one day, and that she still doesn’t consider herself a bookworm.

Some people call Rachael strange because of things she does. She’s learned to disregard what other people think because she jus t doesn’t care any more. She likes to surround herself with people like her so it makes her feel like she is the less strange one in most situations.

Rachael wants to be two completely different people in her life. A communication journalist for one, she has always wanted to be that person. The second possible career would be lawyer. It’s a huge goal, and one day you’ll see her doing something she loves.

Influenced by her parents, Rachael enjoys listening to all kinds of music. Rarely, if ever, do you see her without some sort of music. Every morning you can see Rachael in her bathroom getting ready for school with her player at maximum volume(音量).Her parents always get mad at her about that, but she can’t hear them anyway over the music. Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.

The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.

Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off

greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.

But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But is also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.

There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary material is collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.

11. What does the underlined phrase “over-consumption” refer to?

A. Using too much packaging.

A. helps control the greenhouse effect

B. means burning packaging for energy

C. is the solution to gas shortage

D. leads to a waste of land

14. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?

A. Unpackaged products are of bad quality.

B. Supermarkets care more about packaging.

C. It is improper to judge quality by packaging.

D. Other products are better packaged than food.

15. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. Fighting wastefulness is difficult.

B. Needless material is mostly recycled.

C. People like collecting recyclable waste.

D. The author is proud of their consumer culture.

Having returned from her round trip (往返旅程), the angry woman stood outside the ticket office of the station. "The railway owes me£12," she said to Harry Jenks, the young man working at the office. "You sold me a ticket for May 22nd, but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me £12."

Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. "Come into the office, Madam," he said politely. "I'll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd."

The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd.How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn't have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. "You look sunburnt," he said to her. "Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?"

"Yes," she answered, shyly. "The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!"

"That's fine," said Harry. "My little girl can't swim a bit yet. Of course, she's only three…"

People say teenagers are no good. They make too much noise in shopping malls; they drive carelessly up and down America’s main streets. And at least some of the time those things are true. But we shouldn’t forget that there are hard moments in the life of a teenager too.

I watched such a moment not long ago at a woman’s funeral which happened in a church. A teenage grandson stepped forward. Softly he began: “I want to share a few values that Nana taught me. She never failed to see light in any situation. When our family dog would attack her, what would Nana say? ‘Oh, what beautiful markings that dog has.’ That was Nana.

“She was a strong woman who often lived in the shadow of my grandpa, who was a successful businessman in this city. But she was the one behind the scenes who provided the strength and support for Grandpa’s career,” he said, with a voice now trembling. “That was Nana’s way.”

Finally, in a voice breaking free of sorrow, he looked up and said, “Nana taught me courage. She put up a fight to the end, when she died peacefully, which is how she lived her life. That was Nana’s way, and I hope I can carry on in the same manner.”

There are no hearts as sensitive as those of teenagers, because everything is happening to them for the first time. The trouble with teenagers is that they haven’t learned to be controlled. When that boy rose to speak about the woman who had been his dearest friend, his honest voice dragged each of us out into the open where we could no longer hide. I was moved and learned a

lot.

22. We can infer from the passage that the boy ______.

A. was filled with sadness and gave up finishing his talk

B. was always very good at expressing himself

C. practiced a lot in order to give a moving speech

D. had great difficulty in accepting the loss of Nana

23. The writer wanted to tell the readers ______.

A. the young people were too weak to face certain facts

B. the young people have learned to control themselves

C. the adults could learn something valuable from the young

D. the adults should teach the young how to deal with the death

It is exciting to apply for a job that really interests you. In making your application, there are a

number of points for you to observe.

In your letter of application, aim to say just enough to introduce yourself. If you are answering an advertisement, any information for which it asks must, of course, be given. This will usually cover your school record and any further education and training. You may also be asked to give the names of one or two persons to supply reference. For this purpose you should choose people who know you well enough about your character and ability; and you should also ask for their permission to be named as referees.

It will depend on circumstances how much you can usefully add about yourself. Your purpose is to bring to the notice of the boss any good reason why you rather than any of the other applicants should be chosen for the job. If therefore you feel you have any special skill for the work or, for example, any particular interest in the line of business, let this be known.

Finally there is your use of language. You cannot go wrong if you keep your sentences and paragraphs short, making sure the sense is clear and well expressed. Choose plain words so long as they can express your meaning.

24.The aim of writing a letter of application is to ___________

A. tell the boss your school record

B. express why you are most suitable for the job

C. show your character and ability

People usually hate mice, but one mouse has won the hearts of the people all over the world-the famous Mickey Mouse. Do you know how Mickey came into being?

Very late one night, Walt Disney was still working hard as usual. He was drawing cartoons. Suddenly he heard a strange sound-crunch, crunch. Walt looked inside the waste basket. There

was a family of mice eating pieces of bread that were left over from Walt’s lunch For many nights, they played there. Walt began to like having the mice around. He liked one little mouse better than any of the others. He named this mouse “Mortimer”. They became good friends. Sometimes when Walt was working late into the night, Mortimer would jump onto his shoulder and touch his ear with his cold little nose.
