Title:The Strategies of English Idioms Translation

Introduction to the title and its research situation:

In the past several decades, English idioms translation strategies had attracted people’s attention s; there were too many researches which had been done on English idioms translation strategies. Recently, the study of English idioms translation strategies has been paid more and more attention by researchers home and abroad. Various aspects of English idioms translation strategies have been investigated. Such as American translating theorist E A Nida defines translating consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closet natural equivalent of the source language message (1969) and he also has put forward a translating standard, that is, ―functiona l equivalence‖ or ―dynamic equivalence‖ (1998). Chinese researchers also have done extensive research into English idioms translation such as Yan Fu's ―faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance‖.

Idioms are such an integral part of our language learning that too much about it has been taken for granted. For some people, idiom may not even be considered a worthy subject for academic study. They take it as a tool for access to other fields of English language rather than as a subject in and of itself. However, if you pause and think of idioms, it is indeed necessary to reconsider how much we really understand about the nature of idiom and its role in our life.

Idioms are a cluster of words or phrases that have a meaning of their own peculiar to that language. English is a language particularly rich in idioms----those modes of expression peculiar to a language (of dialect) that frequently defy logical and grammatical rules. Without idioms English would lose much of its variety and humor both in speech and writing while using it properly, people will not only enhance the ability to express all sorts of ideas but also the ability to appreciate culture, which then improves the linguistic ability. English idiom relate so closely to English culture that they are a drop in the ocean of English culture and reflect the significance of English culture throughout history. Customs are a kind of social

phenomenon. They are not the product of individuals but that of the collective in the society, which are affected by politics, economy, religion, literary art and so on and then affect those things in reverse. English idioms are thus greatly influenced by English customs, which concern almost every respect of social life. As a special part of culture, language, especially idioms, inevitably reflects the customs of the nationality. This thesis, based on the former theory, tries to analyze the characteristics and functions of idioms and put forward to some basic strategies of idioms translation, so that English learners can deal with the idioms better with these strategies. Research purposes, contents(materials and discussion) and methods:

Research purposes

This paper aims to help English learners gain a better understanding of idioms and acquire some basic skills of idioms translation. Therefore, English learners can improve their idioms translation skills and know how to use these skills into practice. Contents

Idioms are considered as the essence of English language. It reflects common,similar and specific features of different languages and cultures. The acquisition of idioms is crucial for a successful mastery of English Translation of idioms. It means not only translation of linguistic signs but also that of cultural elements.The theme has made a study on the strategies of English idiom translation. It illustrates the literal translation approach,the free translation approach,and the literal—plus—free translation approach.Learning how to use idioms is a difficult but by no means impossible task. An idiom is different from other literal expressions in that you could not guess its meaning just by understanding all the words in it. Because of their characteristics, learning idioms requires both rote-learning and analytical skills. The text has designed 3 main strategies to help English learners learn idioms. The thesis has explained the strategies in detail, and taken relevant examples to explicit the methods of English idioms vividly.

Methods

At first, the author makes an extensive reading of the concerned theses and documents from the internet and library; then, the author has inspected the current

situation of English idioms translation in China and illustrate why this thesis tends to discuss the strategies of English idioms translation. After the research is done, the author will introduce some of the representative theories in this field put forward by experts in the recent years. Then the author will focus on the strategies of English idioms translation. Next the author will manage to list 3 main methods to deal with the idioms which happen in our daily study and life. With the combination of some idioms translation theories, the author sets forth a series of ways of improving the idioms translation skills.
