Disposable chopsticks, also called hygienic chopsticks and convenient chopsticks, are popular in china because people think they are clean and convenient. But it’s a fact that chopsticks do harm to people’s he alth and their convenience do harm to the envi ronment. And it’s time to let disposable chopsticks go extinct.
Sure, most of you say, we know disposable chopsticks are bed for environment and not very clean. But we cannot see their bed aspect which so matter with us; we don’t see dirty things on them and they’re so convent. Why would we reject disposable chopsticks? I had the same question when I started work on this speech. But as a result of my research, I’m convinced that the use of disposable chopsticks is a costly problem and that we can get along just fine without them. Today, I hope to convince you of the same thing.
The place to begin is by noting that disposable chopsticks cause problems for environment and for people’s health.
Disposable chopsticks are huge waste of forest resource. According to the information of State Forestry Administration, there are 45billion of disposable chopsticks used every year in china which cost about 2.5 million adult trees. If you can’t image the waste of far place, let’s see our school, TJFASU. According to my research, the Muslin restaurant of our school use about 200 pairs of disposable chopsticks every day, which 0.3 Yuan per pair, that is to say, they will cost 2,190 Yuan every year and there are 17 restaurants of similar size of Muslin in our school which may spend 37,230 Yuan every year on them . Image how huge waste the disposable chopsticks have been doing. Worse more, disposable chopsticks are not hygienic and they do harm to our health. Let’s see the disposable chopsticks production process reported by Dazhong Net. After being machined into chopsticks, they are not white and good enough to sell so they always are fumigated by sulphur which will release noxious sulphur dioxide, corrode respiratory mucous membrane and lead to respiratory disease when they are used; or they will be bleached by hydrogen peroxide which is high corrosive to your mouth, esophagus, even your stomach and intestine. After being “beautified”, disposable chopsticks will be spread on the floor to get dry. Just as you can see in the picture, people can walk on them and the mill is like a rubbish dump. Many disposable chopsticks are made in Southeast Asia. It will take about a month to transport them to china by freighter without external packing. In the month, mouse and cockroaches crawl and excrete up them but probably not bite or eat them because they know the chopsticks fumigated by sulphur, bleached by hydrogen peroxide does not taste good. There is one other thing that deserves special mention: in the production process, disposable chopsticks never been disinfected or rinse even they have been “beautified” by sulphur and hydrogen
peroxide. So there are a lot of germs in them and people call “monkey germs” according to their shape. Look at the picture; those are “monkey germs” in a disposable chopstick magnified 50 times. When the disposable chopsticks are fumigated by sulphur, bleached by hydrogen peroxide, the residual sulphur and hydrogen are left on those “monkeys’ ” eyes and noses and when people use chopsticks, the residue will b e released to do harm for people’s health.
We can now see the magnitude of the problem with disposable chopsticks. Fortunately, it is a problem that can be easily solved—do not use them. We can take a pair of our own clean, healthy chopsticks when we have a meal outside. They are cheap, easy to carry and no harm for the environment or for our health.
In conclusion, disposable chopsticks create problems for environment and for people’s health. And that matter s to everybody. By rejecting disposable chopsticks, the problems created by them could be eliminated without upsetting the economy. So, everyone, for our home earth, for our beloved green trees, and for our health, reject the disposable chopsticks from now on!
