I always figured that comedians were the best kind of people to hang around with as a kid. They tell funny stories. make joke after joke. and happiness seems never to leave them. But time goes on. and we come to see these same people as clowns on the outside. but crying a river in the inside. Comedy from these people comes from

a deer pain and sadness in their lives. or out of a deep-seated anger they have at the world around them.

Look at Richard Pryor, need I say more? Richard seemed to have everything. For Superman Ⅲ . He ended up getting more money than Christopher Reeve did. Yet he said while he was in his forties that the last truly happy moment he remembered in his life was when he was jumping around in the dirt while pretending to be a cowboy at the age of 10. This guy set himself on fire, and he played that for laugh while performing live at the Sunni Strip! Comedy was his constant weapon against pain. and he never held anything back.

The movie Funny People understand very well this gloomy field many comedians have to survive in. It stars Adam Sandler as George Simmons. a famous comedian in the movie. Simmons has it all: a beautiful mansion overlooking the sea. a swimming pool. great cars. and so on. But in his eyes. we see that he is a sad man who has come to truly look down upon himself for what he has become. All the wealth he has collected only serves to separate him from the rest of the world and it makes him defensive when around total strangers who cannot see him as a normal person. But now. he hears from his doctor that he has a terminal disease and has only months left to live. Simmons reacts to this news as if someone took away his blood in the heart. and it makes him clearly see just how much he hates his life. So now he has to make every minute count. Then come a series of funny stories.

Comedy is just life as it is. isn't it?

32. What can we infer about “comedians” according to the text?

A. Comedians like to get along with kids.

B. Comedians' life is full of jokes.

C. Comedians often use their sad experience.

D. Comedians often cry in their daily life.

33. When was the happiest moment for Richard Pryor?

A. When he played the part of Supernwn Ⅲ.

B. When he got more money than Christopher Reeve.

C. When he pretended to be a cowboy in the childhood.

D. When he performed live at the Sunset Strip.

34. Why was George Simmons unhappy?

A. He had no friends at all.

B. He spent too much on his house.

C. He wasn't accepted by the outside world.

D. He was hated by all the strangers around.

35. By saying "Comedy is just life as it is. isn't it?". the author means

A. life like comedy will make you happy

B. comedy comes from the sadness in real life

C. there is no happiness at all in real life

D. life is full of comedy in reality

The house is still as I walk downstairs while my husband and three kids sleep peacefully. Usually I go for a long run, but today I choose my favorite exercise DVD insanity. Sweat pours down my face and into my eyes. My heart races as I face my body to finish each movement. As I near the end of the exercise, I feel extremely tired, but a smile is of my face. It’s not a smile because the DVD is over, but a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit. Some people enjoy shopping, smoking, food, work, or even chocolate. But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town. Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite o f their grandmother’s chocolate cake. They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my “no thank you,” or by my choice to have a salad. Over the years, I have learned it’s okay to just say “no.” I shouldn’t feel sorry for refusing food that I don’t want to eat. So what drives me to roll out of bed at 5:00 a.m.? What gives me the reason to just say no to ice cream? Commitment. A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily anxiety, increases self –confidence and energy, extends life and above all improve my body shape. This is the point where a smile appears on my face as I look at myself in the mirror or try on my favorite pair of jeans that now fit just right. It’s through commitment and sweat that I can make a difference within myself inside and out. 1.Why is there a smile on the author’s face in the morning? A. Because she sees her family sleeping peacefully. B. Because she finishes her favorite exercise C. Because she enjoys the interesting DVD D. Because she feels a sense of achievement 2. What does the underlined word “commitment” in the last paragraph mean? A. Good health B. Firm belief C.A strong power D.A regular habit 3. What can we learn about the author from the text? A. She acts in a strange way B. She wants to look different from others C. She aims to develop a good body shape

Here are the garden products to avoid: Cocoa mulch Some gardeners like to use cocoa shell mulch in their gardens but, just like chocolate, cocoa shell mulch contains theobromine (可可碱), which is poisonous to dogs. This means that cocoa shell mulch can be potentially deadly if consumed in large quantities. If you own a dog I’d strongly advise that you avoid using Cocoa mulch in your garden. Compost Despite being an eco-friendly garden feature, compost can be highly dangerous for animal. As organic matter decomposes, it releases mycotoxins (霉菌素), which are poisonous to wildlife. Consumption of mycotoxins can cause panting, vomiting (呕吐), seizures and even death in dogs. If you do use compost in your garden, make sure it is securely fenced off so that your pet cannot access it. Weed killer The chemicals contained in weed killers can be irritants to animals and, in some cases, even poisonous. Some weed killers contain harmful substances, such as borax and arsenic, which can potentially be fatal to pets. If you are unsure whether a weed killer is safe to use in a garden that your pet uses, you should always seek the manufacturer’s advice first, or ask a vet (兽医).
