The earthquake happened at 4:31 am on January 17th, 1994 in Los Angeles. I was suddenly woken up and thrown out of bed. Power was already out and the only way out was to step on broken glass and trip over broken bricks. I held my son and we managed to get out of the building from the sixth floor.

Though we made it outside alive, we were badly injured. We were bruised badly as this quake was a shallow one which is the worst type because it threw everything up and down. We looked as if we were physically beaten by someone. The ligaments(韧带) in my feet were torn from falling and my right foot swelled(肿胀) up to the thickness of my neck! I was so frightened then that I felt little pain until about 45 minutes later!

It was noisy outside and all people were in great fear. After the earthquake, it wasn’t until days and weeks later that people started going back home. We were afraid another one might come. For us, we went back inside after about a week. The whole apartment was in a big mess and we had to dig our way back inside.

Later we learnt from TV reports that the earthquake killed about 64 people that morning. It would have been worse if it happened just a bit later!

Though we had some earthquake insurance, we never fully recovered everything, but that was not what I really cared about, after the earthquake. The earthquake made me realize that life can change so quickly in a moment. I decided to live every day to the fullest after the earthquake. Now I treasure every day that I spend with my families.

21. The writer felt no great pain at first because ____________.

A. he didn’t get hurt until he was out

B. his right foot didn’t swell up at first.

C. he was too frightened to feel much pain

D. he was too worried about his son to feel much pain.

22. After the earthquake, people in the writer’s neighborhood ____________.

A. lived in another city for some time

B. didn’t dare to go back to their homes

C. were sure another earthquake would come

D. helped him dig his way back home

23. What is the passage mainly about?

A. The harm that earthquake can do to us.

B. Things to do after an earthquake happens.

C. The writer’s most unforgettable experience.

D. The writer’s experience in an earthquake.

Still looking for a destination for your weekend break? There are some places which are probably a mere walk away from your college.

King’s Art Centre

A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting artists on show anywhere. An exhibition of four local artists is to be held this weekend.

You could attend a class teaching you how to “learn from the masters” or get more creative with paint — free of charge.

The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee. The Botanic Garden(植物园)

The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University.

The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss.

Get to the display house to see Venus Flytrap, a plant that feeds on insects(昆虫) and other small animals.

The Garden is also a place for wildlife-lovers. Look for grass snakes in the lake.

A snake called “Hissing Sid” is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun. Byron’s Pool

Many stories surround Lord Byron’s time as a student of Cambridge University. Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of “mess and drunkenness”. However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I’m not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his ro oms. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village.

It is also said that sometimes Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron’s Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful paths around the fields. The cries of birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don’t trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf who reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool over a century after Byron.

24. As mentioned in the passage, there is a small charge for_________.

A. attending th e masters’ class

B. working with local artists

C. seeing an exhibition

D. learning life drawing

25. “Torch Aloe” and “Venus Flytrap” are ________.

A. impressive plants

B. common insects

C. rarely-seen snakes

D. wildlife-lovers

26. We can infer from the passage that Byron seemed _________.

A. to like walking

B. to fear pet bears

C. to be a heavy drinker

D. to finish university in 1805

27. The passage is written to introduce _______ to readers.

A. a way to become creative in art

B. some places for weekend break

C. the colorful life in the countryside

D. unknown stories of Cambridge University

C

Italy is one country where beauty is prized more than any other virtue(美德). That is, except in the small town of Piobbico, the self-called World Capital of Ugly People. The road sign at the edge of the town even warns visitors that they are entering the ugly zone. People who consider themselves ugly have been gathering in Piobbico since the 1960s. That’s when Ugly Club president Telesforo Lacobelli set up a dating agency for women who believed they were too ugly to attract husbands. Lacobelli believes that he is ugly himself because he has a short nose in a country where long or large noses have always been considered beautiful.

People from around the world travel to Piobbico to tell their sad stories of ugliness. During the annual Festival of the Ugly, which falls on the first Sunday of every September, hundreds of people get together in Piobbico’s town to elect the president of the Ugly Club. Lacobelli wins the election every year. The Ugly Club has over 20, 000 members. They carry ID cards that grade their ugliness from bearable(可容忍的) to extreme. A prize is awarded to Ugly Club members who qualify as extremely ugly.

The Ugly Club president insists that ugliness is a virtue. Since beautiful people get a lot of attention for their beauty alone, they have to work hard to prove their other virtues. Ugly people, on the other hand, are genuine and do not have to prove anything to anybody, according to Lacobelli.

Lacobelli is a spokesperson for ugly people everywhere. He believes that the uglier one is, the better life can be. Though the club enjoys making fun of beauty, especially beauty competitions, Lacobelli has a serious side as well. He believes that too many people suffer from financial and emotional pressures because they don’t meet society’s standards of beauty. The fact that beautiful people are more successful in their work is a problem that Lacobelli has tried to bring forward to the Italian public and government.

28. Piobbico is rather special because _________.

31. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. The Ugliest Person of the World.

B. The Ugly Capital of the World.

C. Festival of the Ugly.

Ever wonder why playgrounds only belong to children? When you reach your mid-twenties, you aren’t expected to enjoy yourself as freely as you would in your teenage years. Why is such enjoyment limited to a particular age group only? A major culprit is our society’s custom about achieving life’s goals and improving in a career path. But today, we’ll be turning our attention to a less-known reason –the absence of playing equipment(设备) for older generations.

The solution is easy and difficult at the same time. Easy, because the obvious way of correcting is to have playground equipment for adults placed in parks and

on playgrounds together with that for younger generations. And it is difficult because not many companies make such equipment and encouraging older people to visit such locations frequently is a hard task. Not many people would like to leave a few hours out of their already-busy routines to play. However, some companies have started installing(安装) equipment big and strong enough for average-sized adults.

Could gyms provide the service? It depends on how you plan to use the gym-space

for fun purposes. And mostly, they’re used to gain fitness(健康) only. And none of the time spent at the gym for this reason is considered to be enjoyable since it is not fun at all. When was the last time you saw somebody lifting 150 pounds with pleasure? Never.

But if you modernize gym and aim to provide activities other than fitness ones, then yes, gyms could be used for fun purposes. We’ve already seen examples including table tennis and badminton in gyms and they are all great ways to get new adults and older people to have fun on a regular basis like children.

32.Which of following can replace the underlined word “culprit” in Paragraph 1?

A. Cause

B. Concern

C. Disadvantage

D. Effect

33. From the second paragraph, we can know that ____________.

A. Children don’t want to share the playground with others.

B. Companies are unable to produce equipment for adults.

C. Playground equipment for adults shouldn’t be put together with the children’s.

D. Most adults are unwilling to play on the playground due to the full schedule.

34. Which of the following best describe the relation between the paragraphs?

A. ①

B. ①

C. ①

D. ①②③

②③④②③④④④

35. Which of the following statements will the author mostly agree to?

A.The government should provide playing equipment for adults.

B.The playground is supposed to belong to children only.

C.Gyms should be modernized to satisfy all age groups’ needs.

D.It is a waste of money to go to gyms on a regular basis.
