Mary Bickerdyke was born on July 19, 1817, in Knox County, Ohio. She was a woman who almost always disregarded the military rules of the army, running over anyone who stood in the way of her duties.

Fulfilling the duties of a nurse, she cared for the soldiers who she kindly called “her boys” under the command of Generals Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman. The soldiers, in turn, referred to her as “Mother Bickerdyke”.

Mary Bickerdyke’s husband died two years before the war. As a result, she needed to work. To support her two sons, she began practicing as a physician (医师) in Galesburg, Illinois. When the war began, a Union volunteer physician from Galesburg wrote home telling about the bad military conditions at Cairo, Illinois, where he was working. The citizens of Galesburg then collected more than five-hundred dollar s’ worth of medical supplies and selected Bickerdyke to deliver them to him. Once in Cairo, Illinois, she stayed on as a nurse, and through tireless work, re-organized the hospital and improved conditions. At the same time, she gained the respect of General Grant.

Recognizing her ability, Grant allowed Bickerdyke to go with his army down the Mississippi River. Along the way, she set up hospitals wherever they were needed. Later, she also traveled with General Sherman and his western armies.

By the war’s end, she had built three-hundred hospitals. To honor her, General Sherman requested that she ride at the head of his XV Corps in the Grand Review in Washington.

Dear Editor,

This is regarding the article “Should Bicyclists be Licensed to Ride?”

As a pedestrian (步行者) and bus rider, I own neither a car nor a bicycle, but I can’t pass on this one. Bicyclists don’t burn oil, don’t pollute the air, don’t put nearly as much wear and tear on roads as motorists do, and they don’t park on the streets. They don’t park across the sidewalks, forcing pedestrians into the street as drivers of motor vehicles do, either.

If bicyclists break the law, they should be given a punishment, of course, but what about motorists? Thousands of drivers are intentionally breaking the law every day in Seattle and getting away with it. The government should encourage people to stop depending so much on cars and use non-polluting transportation modes instead. Taxing bicyclists is probably not a good way to reach that objective.

I suppose the next step will be to license tricycles

Marjorie Rhodes

Dear Editor,

“Should Bicycles be Licensed to Ride?”deserves mention in another chapter of Gulliver’sTravels. In this proposed chapter, Gulliver lands on another island. Here the citizens do everything backward or in opposition to common sense. Wars are fought against secular (世俗的) states because of a fear of violent religious zealots (狂热者). Common acts of adults are declared illegal, but the use of force is considered the highest moral value. And when Gulliver meets the town leaders, he asks what their greatest concern is. Th ey say, “Oh, pollution and warming of the planet.” Gulliver asks, “What steps are you taking to mitigate those problems?”

The leaders nod with pride, “We’re going to put a tax on bicycle riding, the cleanest form of transportation available.”

Mark Hershey

65. Why does Marjorie Rhodes mention the article “Should Bicyclists be Licensed to Ride?” in her letter?

A. Because it has been written by her.

B. Because her letter is a response to the article.

C. Because she agrees with the opinion expressed in the article.

D. Because she wants to introduce it to others.

66. Marjorie Rhodes wants to tell us in her letter that .

A. motorists should not break the law on purpose

B. bikes also cause some transportation problems

C. the government should also license tricycles

D. people should be encouraged to ride bikes

67. The underlined word “mitigate” in the second letter probably means “________”.

A. reduce

B. increase

C. explain

D. consider

68. We can infer from the second letter that .

A. Gulliver is a friend of Mark Hershey

B. Mark Hershey has been traveling to many countries

C. Mark Hershey thinks a tax on bicycles is a backward move

D. the leaders on the island know they have made a wrong decision

The man whose name is John Darwin turned up in London on Saturday, March 1, 2008. Police said that they arrested him because his wife said he had drowned in an accident five and a half years ago. A doctor officially declared him dead. Police now plan to ask him where he has been during the last five and a half years.

His wife Anne yesterday told reporters she had believed her husband was dead and claimed on his life insurance policy in good faith. A couple named John and Anne were pictured on the company’s website with the company’s boss Mario Vilar, but Vilar said they had not used the surname Darwin. Darwin’s aunt, Margaret Burns, 80, told reporters the tru th may be known “if we wait a bit”. “What’s the point in making a guess when we don’t know? I’m as confused as anybody else about what happens next,”Burns told reporters. “Most of the family believe the trauma (创伤) of nearly drowning in the canoe was enou gh to make him lose his memory, but I’m not so sure. To be honest, I don’t believe he ever got his feet wet.”

Why do we need friends? Well, having friends may well keep you healthier and help you deal with stress better. Some studies show that people with close friends have a greater ability to fight disease than people who are lonely. But never take a friendship for granted. Like a good marriage, friendship needs care and patience. Here is something to remember to maintain a friendship: Make friendship the most important thing. Find the time to be with your friends even if it means letting the grass go unmov ed or the dishes unwashed for a while. When you can’t get together, use the phone to keep in touch.

Open up to close friends. Don’t be afraid to express your inner fears and disappointments. Listen to your friends when they have problems, but offer ad vice only when it’s wanted.

Have different friends for different activities, such as going to the movies, singing in a choir, or taking part in a bowling league.

Don’t wait for a friend to ask a favor. When a friend has the flu, offer to go to the store to buy some pills or drive his / her children to their after-school activities.

How to make new friends?

You can start a group, such as a discussion group on gardening or books. Place an ad in a community newspaper to find people.

Talk to strangers to find new friends. You should be cautious and use your common sense, of course. Conversations started in museums, laundry rooms, or bookstores can lead to firm friendships.

Enroll in an adult-education course. A classroom is a good place to meet others with similar interests.

73. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. How to make new friends.

B. Why do we need friends.

C. How to keep a friendship.

D. How to gain friends’ trust.

74. We can learn from the passage that .

A. we should not give advice to our friends anytime we want to

B. we should offer to help our friends even if they don’t need help at all

C. it’s impolite to have different activities with different groups of friends

D. people with friends can live longer than those who don’t have friends

75. According to the author, _______ are good places to find people sharing your interests.

A. libraries

B. markets

C. laundry rooms

D. classrooms

Dear Tom,

It’s great to receive your e-mail. Now I’d like to tell you something that took place in my school yesterday. In the afternoon we held a grown-up ceremony for our coming 18-year-old birthday. At first we made an oath that as grown-ups we should have a sense of duty for our society from now on. Then we showed our thanks to our parents who have gone through hardships to bring us up and teachers who have been educating us patiently. And our teachers also gave us cards expressing their good wishes to us. Finally we put on wonderful performances, including singing and dancing. We learned a lot from the activity. I think it’s very important for us. I will never forget the day in my life.

25.A。 39.A。根据... but it never seemed to make him less happy ... 45.A。 Don’t be surprised to see dozens of students throughout the museum, busy sketching the museum’s exhibits as well as the building. 根据running over anyone who stood in the way of her duties 的语境可知Bickerdyke总是“不理会”军队里的规定。68.C。
