Until relatively recently, the vast majority of human beings lived and died without ever seeing a city. The first city was probably founded no more than 5,500 years ago.But even 200

“It’s raining cats and dogs !”Although this phrase is not very common in England any more.it clearly shows how we don’t always say what we mean. One thing that is often frustrating for language learners is that they understand every word in a sentence and yet the meaning remains unclear like this sentence that actually means“it’s raining very heavily!” However,it’s not just idioms that cause difficulties for people learning English.

The British are often considered to be polite hut this Call he very confusing for non-native speakers,

We often don’t say what we are thinking—in fact we often say the opposite! Here’s an example that will hopefully explain what I mean:

“You should come round for tea!”

Is this a genuine invitation or is the person just being polite?sterc01ypically(典型地),British people are less open than people from other cultures,so we aren’t as quick to invite people into our homes. This phrase is one of those that we say hut ofte n don’t really mean,so when no further details are given, you can probably assume it was made in the name of politeness! But how does this compare to other countries?

When I lived in India.10ts of people would invite me into their homes hut I always assumed that they were just being polite.Of course,I was wrong. The invitations were almost always genuine, anti people expected me to visit them.1 was always surprised by how welcoming people were.In fact,T think T spent more time at other people’s houses than my own!

This summer, while working in Austria, one of nay flatmates(室友)made mc think about invitations again. She invited me to Join her and her boyfriend for a meal out.A1though touched by the invitation,I immediately assumed that she was just being pol ite so I told her that I didn’t want to intrude. She replied with·“If I didn’t want you to come,I wouldn’t have invited you in the first place!”That taught me politeness is culturally defined.

29.Generally speaking·the British people are__________.

A.go B.ignore it C.think it’s only polite D.think it’s a joke

As I write this I’nl sat on a bumpy(颠簸的)bus back to Santiago in Chile where I am currently working as a language assistant for the year.I’ve just s pent the weekend in a city 5 hours north of Santiago called La Sarena.During,my visit 1 was 1ucky enough to go and see the Flowering Desert,a natural phenomenon that occurs around every 5 years here in the Atacama Desert.

Following a particularly large amount of rainfall earlier in the year,a variety of flowers come into blossom between the months of September and November. There are in fact more than 200 species of flowers that can be found. As well as the plants, there is a big increase of species of insects, birds and 1izards(蜥蜴)in the area.

The Atacama Desert is usually one of the driest places on Earth. In fact,it’s officially the

driest desert and has soil similar to samples taken from Mars! However, the bloom is particularly impressive this year and this is due to the strong presence of El Nino, This is a band of warm water that occurs in the Pacific Ocean off the western coast of South America, changing the temperatures and increasing the rainfall in certain areas.

In order to catch a glimpse of this magnificent jewel of nature,l took a bus with some friends 2 hours north from La Serena to a town called Vallenar.According to the limited information 8vajlable online and in the guidebooks.this was the Flowering Desert’s most southern spot.We asked in the city hall what to do and very generously one of the women there offered to drive us to the area 10kms away. What we saw did not disappoint, and as expected it was even more astonishing than the pictures we had seen online. The vast rug(地毯)of colour spreading into the distance towards the contrasting green hills was simply splendid.A

real reminder of the beauty our planet can provide.

32.What is the author’s career?

A.Travel agent.B.College student.C.A language assistant.D.Professor.33.According to the passage.the flowers’ blossom is_________.

A.in spring B.between September and November

C.in summer D.between May and July

34.What do we know about the Atacama Desert in Paragraph 3?

A.Its soil is similar to samples taken from moon.

However, we can usually come across some phenomena in which people parked the shared bikes casually or destroy them on purpose. In fact, shared bikes bring people great convenience as they provide an effective solution to the “last mile” problem. More importa ntly, they are consistent with the idea that we should lead a low carbon life and make joint efforts to protect the environment. Therefore, shared bikes should be left in public for next users at the proper place rather than be possessed privately or destroyed deliberately. So here I would advocate raising our awareness of using shared bikes reasonably so that everyone can benefit from this public service. 1
