答案:

How to Develop Critical Thinking Skills

According to Wikipedia, critical thinking generally refers to a higher-order of thinking that questions assumptions. It is a way of deciding whether a claim is true, false or even partly true and partly false. Also described as "thinking about thinking", critical thinking has become an important component in many professions. Despite that critical thinking ability is highly required in education, some students are always said to be less critical compared with their counterparts from a different educational background.

Two major factors may contribute to the lack of critical thinking skills of these students. To begin with, let us take China, Japan, and Korea as examples, there has formed a tradition that children could never be allowed to disobey their parents, teachers and authorities due to historical and political backgrounds. Additionally, the difference in education system could be another reason. Take the American way of teaching as an example, students in America are usually encouraged to discuss in groups and challenge each other, the tutors or even the authorities, in which critical thinking skills are gradually cultivated. However, in most Asian countries, students are just the passive recipients rather than active learners. Once they have grown up in such a restricted education system, it would be rather difficult to change the way they think.

Therefore, it is the primary concern for the students to increase the awareness of critical thinking. Besides, the education system should be reformed to get students fully involved in all inquiry processes like discussing, challenging the authorities and keeping asking why. Moreover, teachers'

exploration on how to develop students' critical thinking skills should be another focal point in the education system reform.

解析:

W: Hello, Mr. Hamilton. I heard that recently Wales conduct a campaign to fight for reduction of plastic bag use.

M: Yes. Plastic actually is a very useful resource, but the carrier bag is probably the product that gets the most criticism.

W: Is it because they are widely used?

M: Yes, and the plastic carrier bag gets blamed for lots of environmental problems.

W: Can you say something in detail about the environmental problems they caused?

M: Yes. Many of them end up in our seas and in our countryside. These plastic don't decay naturally very quickly. It can take up to 1,000 years.

W: That is awful.

M: And the statistics say UK shoppers use around 13,000 carrier bags in their lifetime. In Wales that amounts to around 480 million bags every year or 150 bags for every person.

W: Incredible! I never imagine it was that much.

M: So to try and cut that number, the Welsh government is introducing a compulsory tax of five pence for every bag that someone uses.

W: That is a brilliant idea. People may think twice when they plan to use the plastic bags.

M: And they might start re-using the old bags or recycling.

W: In this way, more plastic bags could be saved.

M: The government also wants people to think more about environmental issues and to change how they behave and that could lead to a cleaner and tidier Wales.

to care more about the environment.

答案:B

M: Hi, May, how about going swimming this weekend?

W: Oh, sorry, Rob, I don't know how to swim.

M: Really? I think swimming is a very popular activity in the UK and it is said that four in five adults in the UK are good swimmers.

W: You're right. Most people recognize that swimming is very important for safety and good for fitness. But maybe some people weren't introduced to the water early enough and they don't have the confidence to start swimming later in life. Just like me.

M: And in fact experts say that the best time to learn is when we're babies or children.

W: That makes sense. I think a lot of babies are natural swimmers, so it's good for them to be in the water from an early age.

M: As long as they've been supervised well.

W: Definitely! Babies as young as three months old can start swimming. But there are still many people like me who didn't start learning swimming in our childhood. What can those people do?

M: Ah, well there are a number of schemes to encourage people to swim. I know one called "Big Slash", which celebrates swimming and wants to get more people into the water, whether they're adults or children.

W: That sounds wonderful. Can you tell me more about this scheme?

M: They always arrange many swimming classes for adults and the coach will use some techniques to encourage adults to swim.

W: I am interested in it. Do you know how I can participate?

M: Well, this Saturday in Central Pool they will hold an orientation session for beginners. If you have time, you can go and have a look.

W: Oh, thanks a lot.

Technology experts, government officials, policy makers and engineers are meeting this week in Italy. They have gathered in Rome for the first Green Standards Week conference.

Italy's Ministry of Economic Development and the International Telecommunications Union organized the conference. The event calls attention to the need for information and communication technologies to fight climate change and to build greener, more environmentally-friendly economies. In recent years, the world has changed because so many people now use computers, mobile phones and other kinds of electronic devices. But the increasing use of information and communication technologies also has led to more pollution, especially carbon dioxide emissions. This is mostly because of the energy used to manufacture, transport and operate such equipment. Still, many experts say these technologies offer the best chance for reducing greenhouse gases.

The Global Information Society reported last year that information and communication technologies could help to cut total production of greenhouse gases by as much as 15 percent by 2020.

Alan Finlay, an expert in economy, says the effect of using information and communication technologies to build cleaner environments is far more powerful than their harmful effects.

He says when people are looking at greening with information technologies, they are looking at the impact of these technologies on the environment but also what these can be used in order to improve the impact of other industries on the environment. And these technologies can do more good in a sort of bigger context.

United Nations agencies are warning of food shortages next year in South Sudan. The Food and Agriculture Organization says the new country is likely to produce only half the food it needs this year. The Food and Agriculture Organization blames the situation on unpredictable rains, the return of thousands of refugees, and conflict.

In August, the Food and Agriculture Organization did a study called a rapid crop assessment. It estimated that farmers in South Sudan could produce, at most, 500,000 metric tons of food this year.

South Sudan became an independent nation in July after years of civil war with the Sudanese government in Khartoum. People in the south depended heavily on food aid during the war. Now they are trying to produce more of their own food.

Separation from the north was peaceful when it came. But since then South Sudan has faced tribe conflict and rebel violence in several areas. And many refugees have returned from the north, adding to the population.

And in some places, armed conflict interfered with clearing the land and planting the seeds. Farmers also had to deal with high fuel prices, labor problems, stolen cattle and disputes over grasslands and water sources.

Although South Sudan has a good supply of fertile land, but only four percent is farmed. It is estimated that 1.2 million people in South Sudan will face major food shortages this year. Last year, the number was 970,000.

C) Half of the population. D) 4% of the population.

A) During the civil war, the South Sudan mainly depended on food aid. √

B) South Sudan has many fertile lands so they could

conquer food shortage in a short period.

C) There was a severe fight between the South Sudan and

Sudanese government before the separation.

D) The Food and Agriculture Organization will give South

Sudan some help to get through this tough period.

答案:A

(People in the south depended heavily on food aid during the war)。 (Separation from the north was peaceful when it came),因此选项C也不正确;文中并未提到粮农组织是否会给南苏丹帮助,因此,选项D也不准确,所以选A。

"Virtually everyone agrees that a person's weight has an impact on the chances for a long and healthy life," the report says. "More than nine in ten believe that weight has an impact on attractiveness, either a little or a lot." Ninety percent of Americans know that most of their peers are overweight, but just 40 percent believe themselves to be too fat, according to a study published on Tuesday.

Government statistics show that more than 60 percent of the US population is overweight, and half is obese, meaning they are at serious risk of health effects from their weight.

But the Pew Research Center telephone survey of more than 2,000 adults found that many people overestimate how tall they are and underestimate how much they weigh—and thus do not rate themselves as overweight, even when they are. The survey finds that most Americans, including those who say they are overweight, agree that personal behavior—rather than genetic disposition or marketing by food companies—is the main reason why people are

2017年6月大学英语六级考试真题及答案解析(第一套) Part I Writing (30 minutes) Directions: Suppose you are asked to give advice on whether to attend a vocational college or a university, write an essay to state your opinion. You are required to write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words. Whether to Attend a Vocational College or a University? It’s an undisputable truth that virtually all high school graduates will encounter the choices between a vocational college and a university. And when it comes to this question, students’ ideas are not cut from the same cloth. In point of which to choose and what to be taken into consideration, my advices are as follow. In the first place, we should be conscious of the fact that both of the two choices have its own superiorities. For instance, a vocational college specializes in cultivating human resources with practical capabilities; while a university serves as the cradle of academic researchers in different fields. Then it does follow that high school graduates should have a clear picture of themselves. That is to say, they should know their merits and demerits and their choices must give play to their strengths whilst circumvent weaknesses. In addition, interest is the best teacher and it’s also the premise of learning on one’s own initiative. Thus interest must be taken into account because it can not only decide how far one can reach academically and professionally but also how happy and fulfilled one will be. In brief, all above just goes to show that there really is no one-size-fits-all answer for the question. The key lies in a clear cognition, accurate self-positioning and the interest of oneself. Only then can every one find a right path that works best for us. Part II Listening Comprehension (30 minutes) Section A Directions: In this section, you will hear two long conversations.

48. By promoting “body activism,” University of Texas psychologists aim to prevent ________. What is surprising is the method psychologists at the University of Texas have come up with to keep girls from developing eating disorders. Their main weapon against super skinny (role) models: a brand of civil disobedience dubbed “body activism.”

A novel way of making computer memories, using bacteria FOR half a century,the(1)__________of progress in the computer industry has been to do more with less.Moore's law famously observes that the number of transistors which can be crammed into a given space(2)__________ every 18 months. The amount of data that can be stored has grown at a similar rate. Yet as(3)__________ get smaller, making them gets harder and more expensive. On May 10th Paul Otellini, the boss of Intel,a big American chipmaker, put the price of a new chip factory at around $10 billion. Happily for those that lack Intel's resources, there may be a cheaper option—namely to mimic Mother Nature, who has been building tiny(4)__________,in the form of living cells and their components, for billions of years, and has thus got rather good at it. A paper published in Small,a nanotechnology journal, sets out the latest example of the(5)__________. In it,a group of researchers led by Sarah Staniland at the University of Leeds,in Britain, describe using naturally occurring proteins to make arrays of tiny magnets, similar to those employed to store information in disk drives. The researchers took their(6)__________ from Magnetospirillum magneticum,a bacterium that is sensitive to the Earth's magnetic field thanks to the presence within its cells of flecks of magnetite,a form of iron oxide. Previous work has isolated the protein that makes these miniature compasses. Using genetic engineering, the team managed to persuade a different bacterium—Escherichia coli,a ubiquitous critter that is a workhorse of biotechnology—to(7)__________ this protein in bulk. Next, they imprinted a block of gold with a microscopic chessboard pattern of chemicals. Half the squares contained anchoring points for the protein. The other half were left untreated as controls. They then dipped the gold into a solution containing the protein, allowing it to bind to the treated squares, and dunked the whole lot into a heated(8)__________ of iron salts. After that, they examined the results with an electron microscope. Sure enough, groups of magnetite grains had materialised on the treated squares, shepherded into place by the bacterial protein. In principle, each of these magnetic domains could store the one or the zero of a bit of information, according to how it was polarised.
