Generally speaking, government regulations normally ban anything from smoking in public places to parking in certain zones. But officials in the Brazilian town of Biritiba Mirim, 70km (45miles) east of Sao Paulo, have gone far beyond that. They plan to prohibit residents from dying early because the local cemetery(墓地) has reached full capacity. There’s no more room to bury the dead, they can’t be cremated(火化) and laws forbid a new cemetery. So the mayor has proposed a strange solution: outlaw death. Mayor Roberto Pereira says the bill is meant as a protest against federal regulations that prohibit new or expanded cemeteries in preservation areas. “They have not taken local demands into consideration”,he claims. A 2019 decree(法令) by Brazil’s National Environment Council forbids burial grounds in protected areas. Mr. Pereira wants to build a new cemetery, but the project has been stopped because 98% of Biritiba Mirim is considered as a preservation area. Biritiba Mirim,a town of 28,000 inhabitants, not only wants to prohibit residents from passing away. The bill also calls on people to take care of their health in order to avoid death. “I haven’t got a job,nor am I healthy. And now th ey say I can’t die. That’s ridiculous,” Amarido do Prado,an unemployed resident said. The city council is expected to vote on the regulation next week. “Of course the bill is laughable, illegal, and will never be approved,” said Gilson Soares de Campos,an assistant of the mayor. “But can you think of a better resolution to persuade the government to change the environmental decree that is prohibiting us from building a new cemetery?” The bill states that “offenders will be held responsible for their acts.” However,it does not say what the punishment will be. 4. What is the bill to be proposed by the officials in Biritiba Mirim? A. Ban on building a new cemetery. B. Ban on parking in certain zones. C. Forbidding buried grounds in preservation. D. Prohibiting residents from dying early. 5. What can we infer from the phrase “have gone far beyond that” in the first paragraph? A. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have made these regulations. B. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have been to many places around the world. C. The bill to be proposed by officials in Biritiba Mirim is much too unexpected. D. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have built too many cemeteries in their town. 6. What’s the attitude of the mayor of Biritiba Mirim towards the federal regulations? A. He gives strong backing to them. B. He objects to them. C. He remains silent about them. D. He asks the residents for advice on them. 7. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

E Plants are flowering faster than scientists predicted(预测)in reaction to climate change, which could have long damaging effects on food chains and ecosystems. Global warming is having a great effect on hundreds of plant and animal species around the world, changing some living patterns, scientists say. Increased carbon dioxide(CO2)in the air from burning coal and oil can have an effect on how plants produce oxygen, while higher temperatures and changeable rainfall patterns can change their patterns of growth. X kb 1. c m “Predicting species' reaction to climate change is a major challenge in ecology,” said the researches of several U.S. universities. They said plants had been the key object of study because their reaction to climate change could have an effect on food chains and ecosystem services. Nature website, uses the findings from plant life cycle studies The study, published on theand experiments across four continents and 1,634 species. It found that some experiments had underestimated(低估)the speed of flowering by 8.5 times and leafing by 4 times. “Across all species, the experiments under-predicted the speed of the advance — for both leafing and flowering — that results from temperature increases,” the study said. The design of future experiments may need to be improved to better predict how plants will react to climate change, it said. Plants are necessary for life on the Earth. They are the base of the food chain, using photosynthesis (光合作用)to produce sugar from carbon dioxide and water. They let out oxygen which is needed by nearly every organism on the planet. Scientists believe the world's average temperature has risen by about 0.8℃ since 1900, and nearly 0.2℃every ten years since 1979. So far, efforts to cut emissions(排放)of planet-warming greenhouse gases are not seen as enough to prevent the Earth heating up beyond 2℃ this century — a point scientists say will bring the danger of a changeable climate in which weather extremes are common, leading to drought, floods, crop failures and rising sea levels. 57. What is the key information the author wants to give in Paragraph 1? A. Plants' reaction to weather could have damaging effects on ecosystem. B. The increasing speed of flowering is beyond scientists' expectation. C. Climate change leads to the change of food production patterns. D. Food chains have been seriously damaged because of weather. Nature website that ______. 58. We can learn from the study published on the A. plants' flowering is 8.5 times faster than leafing B. there are 1,634 plant species on the four continents C. scientists should improve the design of the experiments D. the experiments failed to predict how plants react to climate change

Eighteen years ago,Terry Grahl, was pregnant with her fourth child. “Money was very tight.” Terry recalls. So when her mom called to ask if she'd like to go shopping at the local fabric( 布料)store for the coming Christmas, she couldn't say no because she knew she badly needed some fabrics to make new clothes for her children. “1 remember walking around, gazing at all this beautiful fabric, wondering whether there is anything cheap that I could afford. And I could still get some money left to buy Christmas gifts for my family.” Well,Terry’s mom must have known what Terry was thinking. Smiling kindly, she whispered to Terry,“You pick any fabrics you like. It’s your Christmas gift from me.” Terry’s eyes were filled with tears as the cart began to overflow with many fabrics, but not because Terry was planning on making herself a pretty dress or a pair of curtains for the kitchen. Rather,Terry’s mom's kindness had inspired some holiday gift ideas in Terry, and it didn’t take long for Terry to figure out what she was going to do with all that fabric. “I was going to make my first quilt.” She explains. “Every night I would work on this queen-size quilt. With every stitch(一针),I thought about all that my mom had done for me over the course of my childhood, during which we were always battling homelessness, but Mom somehow managed to fill our lives with love and make everything okay.” On Christmas day, five days after her baby girl was born,Terry handed her mom a gift box. Inside was the quilt she had sewn, from the fabric her mother had given her as a gift. 1. What do we know about Terry eighteen years ago? A. Terry made a living by making clothes. B. Terry had a bad relationship with her mom. C. Terry and her family lived a hard life at that time. D. Terry often went shopping at the local fabric store. 2. Which of the following words best describes her mom? A. Strict. B. Critical C. Faithful. D. Generous. 3. What made Terry change her idea about Christmas gift? A. The value of the fabric. B. The responsibility for her family. C. The memory of her childhood. D. The endless love from her mother. 4. What is the best title for the text? A. A Christmas Day B. The First Quilt C. Colorful Fabrics D. Hard Childhood B Forget losing weight or saving money—we suggest one simple task to add to your list of inspiring New Year’s decisions: read a book. Trust us,and your brain will thank you. Not only does reading increase the amount of daily pleasure in your life, but it could also delay dementia (痴呆) and even help you live longer. But still, picking the perfect novel isn’t easy. Thankfully,Business Insider asked a Harvard professor to recommend the one book he thinks every student should read in 2019—and we suggest adding it to your list, too. (No time for all the books on your list? Here’s a shortcut: Read the endings to some of the world’s most famous books, instead.) Steven Pinker,Professor of Psychology at Harvard, recommends The Internationalists by legal scholars Hathaway and Shapiro. The book makes a surprising claim that the Kellogg-Briand Paris Peace Pact (条约) of 1928,which declared war illegal, has caused a steady drop in war throughout history. “But in their fascinating and evidence-rich book, they make a lifelike case,” Pinker said. “And like The Clash of Civilizations and The End of History, the book presents a sweeping vision (视野) of the international scene, making sense of many developments in the news and recent history.” Other professors at Harvard recommended classics like Anna Karenina by Tolstoy,as well as Just Mercy by Stevenson,The Theory of Moral Sentiments by Adam Smith, and Robot-Proof by Joseph Aoun. So,go ahead and give (at least) one of these books a read in 2019! And while you’re at it,you should add the following 20 books you really should have read by now to your list, too… 1. Why does the author say “Forget losing weight or saving money”?
