Passage A

My First Car & My First Date

My first car was a blue Chevy. It was only three years old when I bought it, and I was so proud driving it around, looking to see who was looking at me. That car is what gave me a chance with Karen. For a long time, I liked Karen. But I could only say “hi” to her because of my shyness. My car seemed to give me courage, so I asked her to go to the drive-in with me. She said yes! It was my first date.

When the big night arrived, I was nervous. Very! I dressed carefully, checking and rechecking my wallet to make sure I had my money. Finally, I picked up Karen and we headed for the drive-in. That night seemed to be perfect. Karen wore a blue dress that almost went with my car. Her hair blew in the wind as we drove through the streets. I felt confident. This dating stuff is a piece of cake, I thought, as we pulled into our place at the drive-in. Slowly the sky darkened and soon the movie began.

By the middle of the movie, “I'm thirsty,”Karen said suddenly. "I'll get us something!" I said. I walked through the dark rows of cars. I bought Cokes and popcorn and M&M's, and then turned to head back to my car.

And that's when I realized I had no idea where my car was! A sea of cars surrounded me. In the dark, they all looked alike. I couldn't even remember which direction I'd come from! So I began walking around looking for a blue Chevy. Then ...could it be? Yes! I headed to the car, hoping the Cokes weren't too warm or the popcorn too cold for Karen's liking. I opened the door-- only to discover I didn't know the people in the car.

Finally, after looking for my car in the dark so long that I ate the popcorn myself and drank both Cokes, I found the car. Karen glanced over at me, her eyes icy. "Where's my drink?" she asked. I showed her the M&M's. "This is all they had." I sat into my seat, and we watched the rest of the movie in silence. (Actually, it was almost the end.)

I never went to with Karen again, although one time she did ask to borrow my car. (I said no) And the next time I took a date to the drive-in. I took an extra pack of

M&M's with me and dropped them all the way, so I could find my way back.

The Car of the Future

It is a cold winter morning but your car is waiting for you, warm and comfortable, at exactly the temperature you like. You open the door by pressing your finger against the lock and your car greets you with a friendly "Hi, how are you?" You sit down and the computer reminds you of your schedule. You start the car. You now have a joystick, steering-by-wire, and braking-by-wire. The old mechanical parts of the past are gone.

As you back out of your driveway, warning sensors warn you about objects and pedestrians in your way. Using voice commands you to program your route, check your emails and dictate answers, ask for local and international news, look up phone numbers and play music.

The car also looks after your health. Sensors in your seat and armrest tell you your weight and blood pressure, while sensors in the dashboard notice if you are drowsy and vibrate the joystick to wake you.

Many of the old worries associates with driving are gone. Traffic jams won't happen any more because your car automatically avoids crowed roads. Collision avoidance sensors prevent accidents. Speeding tickets are also a thing of the past- sensors pick up signals from traffic signs and automatically adjust your speed or stop your car. And breaking down is no longer a problem. Your car diagnoses any potential faults or worn parts and warns you and the service station, the spare parts are already waiting for you.

Your car can even park itself. Just stop at any parking space (your car knows, of course, if parking is permitted here) and operate the automatic parking system. The car scans the size and shape of the available space and then reverses in.

It is impossible to say that any one man invented the automobile. Many individuals living and working in different countries and at different times contributed to its development. Many of the discoveries that went into the creation of the automobile were small in themselves. But together they were important. Here are two examples.
