3、Reading Comprehension

(1)、 Trees should only be pruned when there is a good and clear reason for doing so a nd, fortunately, the number of such reasons is sm all. Pruning involves the cutting away of overgrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by

the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tr ee to grow in its own way.

First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The obj ect may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of sm all side branches, which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pru ning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut out diseased or dead wood, or b ranches that are rubbing against each other and thus causing wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by rem oving branches that are blocking up the center and so preventi ng the free movement of air.

One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but it is a wound that will heal. Often there is a race between the healin g and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce that risk of death as far as possible. It is essential to make the area, which has been pruned, smooth and clean, for h ealing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint it with one of the substances available from garden shops produced e specially for this purpose. Pruning is usually done in winter, for then you can see the shape of the tree clearly without interference from the leaves and it is, too, very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is, of course, impossible to paint them pr operly.

1. Pruning may be done to ______.

A. make the tree grow taller

B. improve the shape of the tree

C. get rid of the small branches

D. make the small branches thicker

2. Trees become unhealthy if a gardener _____.

A. allows too many branches to grow in the middle

B. does not protect them from the wind

C. forces them to grow too quickly

D. damages som e of the small side branches

3. A special substance is painted on the tree ______.

A. to make a wound smooth

B. to prevent disease entering a wound

C. to cover a rough surface

D. to help a wound to dry

4. A good gardener prunes a tree ______.

A. at intervals throughout the year

B. as quickly as possible

C. occasionally when necessary

D. regularly every winter

5. What was the writer's purpose when writing this passage?

A. To give practical instructions for pruning a tree.

B. To give a general description of pruning.

C. To explain how trees develop diseases.

D. To discuss different methods of pruning.

(2)、 In every society it is necessary to have a general system of laws to ensure justice. Laws are designed to make certain that people's rights are protected and that people resp ect each other's rights. Sometimes, however, laws are passed which are specific to a time or situation. For example, a town in Indiana once passed a law making it illegal to shoot op en a can of food. Apparently, some gun-carrying citizens forgot their can openers and natu rally enough, used their guns to do the job. This disturbed other citizens, and endangered t heir lives, so a law was passed to prevent it.

Specific laws som etimes remain in existence long after the problem has disappeared. Th e laws then seem strange. For example, the Indiana law was no longer necessary when citi zens stopped carrying guns and using them as can openers. Since the law was no longer n eeded, what once made sense now seems like nonsense.

Sometimes laws designed to serve a good purpose were passed but somehow these bec ame mixed up in their wording. As a result, the laws don't make sense. In one state there i s a law which says that it is "illegal to move or to attempt to move a motor vehicle." Obvio usly, a massive traffic jam would occur if everyone suddenly obeyed that law. But no one d oes, of course, because the intention of the law was not to prevent owners from moving th eir own cars. It was to prevent people from moving (stealing) other people's cars.

It is often harder to repeal (废止)a law than to pass one, so many of these old laws remain in existence. Because they no longer fit the way people live or because the problem no longer exists, these laws are igno

red. Everyone understands that and life goes on. Thus, laws that once made very good sen se now seem like nonsense.

1. According to the passage, laws are designed for the purpose of ____________.

A. protecting people's rights

B. making people respect each other

C. preventing gun-carrying

D. punishing criminals

2. The word "job " in paragraph 1 refers to ___________.

A. working

B. shooting

C. preventing gun-carrying

D. disturbing others

3. The author used the Indiana law as an example to explain _________.

A. how some laws are passed and changed

B. how people in Indiana open cans

C. why some laws may seem strange

D. why people in Indiana no longer use their guns

4. What's the problem with the law concerning motor vehicles?

A. It leads to traffic jams.

B. It is not clearly written.

C. It is not designed to serve a good purpose.

D. It has been out of date.

5. We can conclude from the passage that ___________.

A. a law system is necessary for every society

B. some laws that don't make sense may also get passed

C. it is more difficult to change the old law than pass a new one

D. some laws may seem strange as time passes

大学英语四级模拟题四 Part One Reading Comprehension (2’×10 = 20’) Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Air pollution can spread from city to city. It even spreads from one country to another. Some northern European countries have had “black snow”from pollutants that have traveled through the air from other countries and have fallen with the snow. So air pollution is really a global problem. Air pollution can kill babies, older people, and those who have respiratory(呼吸的)diseases. As found in cities, air pollution increases the risks of certain lung diseases. Air pollution can cause both airplane and car accidents because it cuts down visibility (能见度). There are other possible health dangers from air pollution that we don’t know much about. For example, scientists are trying to find out whether chemicals that reach us from the air may cause changes in our cells. These changes might cause babies to be born with serious birth defects. Scientists are trying to learn how all the many chemicals are apt(易于的)to take into our bodies from air, water, food, and even medicines act together to affect our health and the way our bodies work. That is another reason why it is so important to begin to control pollution now instead of waiting until we learn all the answers. Air pollution costs us a lot of money. It corrodes(腐蚀)our buildings. It damages farm crops and forests. It has a destructive effect on our works of art. The cost of all this damage to our government is great. It would be much more worthwhile, both for us and for the government, to spend our tax dollars on air pollution control. 1. Air pollution may lead to airplane accidents because . A. it may cause pilots to be ill B. engines may fail from the air-borne dirt C. visibility is reduced D. it brings a lot of black snow 2. Scientists are trying to find a link between pollution and . A. intelligence levels B. birth problems C. man’s behavior D. the nervous system 3. Scientists have not yet determined . A. all of the effects of pollution on the human body B. how pollution can be controlled successfully C. when the atmosphere first became polluted D. how some snow becomes black 4. The author suggests that before air pollution becomes more serious, . A. factories will be forced to stop operating B. buildings should be protected C. the earth will begin to grow colder D. more money should be spent to solve the problem 5. We can conclude that . A. civilization may be ruined if pollution is not controlled B. pollution is more serious in Europe than it is in America C. most people do not know that pollution is a serious problem D. we should learn all the answers before we begin to control pollution Passage Two Stiletto heels could be banned from the workplace because of health and safety reasons, according to British Trade Union bosses. The Trade Union Congress, predominantly male, has proposed a motion arguing that high heels are disrespectful to women while they also contribute to long term injuries. They propose instead that women wear “sensible shoes”with an inch heel limit in an attempt to avoid future foot and back pain as well as injuries. The motion is due to be debated at next month’s conference. The motion states: “Congress believes high heels may look glamorous on the Hollywood catwalks but are completely in appropriate for the day-to-day working environment. Feet bear the burden of daily life, and for many workers prolonged standing, badly fitted footwear, and in particular high heels can be a hazard. Around two million days a year are lost through sickness as a result of lower limb disorders. Wearing high heels can cause long-term foot problems and also serious foot, knee and back pain and damaged joints. Many employers in the retail sector force women workers to wear high heels as part of their dress code. More must be done to raise awareness of this problem so that women workers and their feet are protected.” Nadline Dorries, the Tory Member of Parliament, however criticized the motion and said the extra height heels give women can help them when in the workplace. “I’m 5ft 3in and need every inch of my Christian Louboutin heels to look my male colleagues in the eye,”she said. “If high heels were banned in Westminster, no one would be able to find me. The Trade Union leaders need to get real, stop using obvious sexist tactics by discussing women’s

大学英语期末考试写作必背范文

Is It Better to Buy or Rent? The price of housing has kept increasing in recent years, which causes a big headache for people living in cities. A lot of people cannot afford to own a real estate property, so they choose to rent instead of buying an apartment. This group of people does not want to bear burden of mortgage so that they opt for a practical solution. Renting an apartment makes them have a place to stay and thus they can focus on work as well as personal life. Some other people, however, believe that an apartment owned by themselves makes them feel safe and relieved, so they are willing to sacrifice some other aspects of life to borrow money from the bank to buy an apartment. As far as I am concerned, to buy or to rent is all about it will be better to rent first and wait for the good timing when the price is going down to buy. Topic 2: On Job Hopping It seems that nowadays, very few young people are willing to stay in a job position for long, let alone for the whole life. They change jobs constantly. This results from several factors. Firstly, young people like fresh things, and it is easy for them to be fed up with old routine work. So when they stay in a position for a while, the excitement will fade out. They are quite realistic and not willing to waste time in a job they are not interested in. Thirdly, some young people are not satisfied with current salary, believing they deserve better pay. In my opinion, constant job hopping will not benefit young people in their career development. Every job has its own merits and young people can certainly learn something from it as long as they are patient and wise enough. Every job experience is valuable down the career path and young people shall be able to make the most of it. Topic 3: Online Social Network Modern people will be no stranger to online social network. Facebook, Renren and Kaixin001 are probably the most populous networks among Chinese netizen. In these networks, people interact with each other, be it a stranger or a friend, and have a lot of fun in the virtual world. This phenomenon could be a result of the fast development of the Internet and people's great interest of the virtual world. I think it is a very good new platform for people to keep in touch. But it should not be overused. Firstly, some people are addicted to it, which makes them want to get online 24 hours a day. When people spend too much time on one thing, they will naturally have not enough time for study and for work. Secondly, online social network change people's behavior of interacting with others. In virtual world, you just click the mouse and type in words instead of having a face-to-face talk. This will not benefit people's long term friendship, and even harm their interpersonal relationships in real world.
