Passage 1

A group of people who share the same interests and way of life is called a society. Sociology is the science that examines human society. The term sociology is derived form the Latin word socio, which means “companion, union of people”.

Sociologists are interested in how a society began and how it grew. They also study the levels within a society. For example, the child is part of the family, the family is part of the neighborhood, and the neighborhood is part of the community. There are many different groups, and sociologists are interested in the effect that these groups have on people.

A Frenchman named August Comte made sociology a separate science in the 1830s. He suggested that a new science was necessary to study a society of people. A famous book, Principle of Sociology, was published by an Englishman, Herbert Spencer, in 1882. this book had an unprecedented effect on the science of sociology. In this book, Spence theorized that a society’s customs evolved, or grew, from very simple to more complicated and advanced. This theory shows the influence that Charles Darwin (who believed that man had evolved from very simple forms to the present human) had on Spencer.

Passage 2

Today, supermarkets are found in almost every large city in the world. But the first supermarket was opened only fifty years ago. It was opened in New York by a man named Michael Cullen.

A supermarket is different from other types of stores in several ways. In supermarkets, goods are placed on open shelves. The customers choose what they want and take them to the check-out counter. This means that fewer employees are required than in other stores.

The way products are displayed is another difference between supermarkets and many other types of stores. For example, in supermarkets, there is usually a display of small inexpensive items just in front of the check-out counter: candies, chocolate, magazines, cheap books and so on. Why are they there?

Most customers who go to a supermarkets buy from a shopping list. They know exactly what they need to buy. They shop according to a plan. By the time he or she reaches the check-out counter, the customer is feeling pleased and relaxed because the task of shopping is finished. In this happy mood, the customer sees an attractive display of inexpensive goods that were not on her shopping list. Now she feels like buying something just for her own pleasure and enjoyment. Many customers buy form these displays of products near the check-out counter, and this is exactly what the owner of the supermarket hopes they will do.

Another important fact in helping a customer choose what to buy, is where a product is placed on a shelf. A product that is placed at eyelevel on a shelf sells much better than one which is placed on a lower or higher shelf. A product which is easy to see sells best. Manufacturers pay a higher price to have their products placed at eye level on the shelves.

The comfort and convenience of shopping centers is another factor which makes them popular with customers. Large parking spaces are provided, and many supermarkets stay open until very late at night.

6According to the passage which statement is NOT true?

A ) Today supermarkets are found in almost every big city.

B) The first supermarket was opened only half a century ago.

D) A supermarket is different from other kinds of stores on tow ways.

A ) Supermarkets need more clerks than other stores.

B) In supermarkets goods are placed o n closed shelves.

C) the customers prefer supermarkets to other kinds of stores

D) the customers pay any clerk they meet for what they have bought in supermarkets.

8) A product that is placed ______ sells best.

A ) on a lower shelf B) on a higher shelf C) as high as one’s waist D) as high as one’s eyes

9)Why do you think shopping centers attract more customers than other kinds of

stores?

A)they have more kinds of goods.

B)They have few employees.

C)They display small inexpensive items in front of check-out counters.

D)They have large parking lots and they stay open until almost midnight

10)According to the way small inexpensive items are displayed we can infer than

the owner of a supermarket has a good knowledge of ___________.

A ) physiology

B ) psychology C) biology D) biophysics

Passage 1

The modern sailing ship was developed by a man who never went to sea. He was Prince Henry of Portugal, the younger son of the Portuguese king.

Prince Henry lived in the fifteenth century. As a boy he became devoted to the sea, and he dedicated himself to improving the design of ships and the methods of sailing them. In 1416, when he was twenty-two, Henry founded a school for mariners, to which he invited every one who could help him –Jewish astronomers, Italian and Spanish sailors, and Arab mathematicians and may makers who knew how to use the crude compass of the day and could improve it.

Henry’s goal was to design and equip vessels that would be capable of making long ocean voyages without having to hug the shore. The caravel carried more sails and was longer and slimmer than any ship then made, yet was tough enough to withstand gales at sea. Passage 2

In America Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. On that day we send our mothers a special Mother’s Day card, and perhaps some flowers or candy, to show our love and appreciation for all they have done for us. Although Mother’s Day is a relatively new holiday in America, more and more other countries are also setting aside a day to honor their mothers.

I want to tell you today how the idea of having a special day for mothers began. It all started over a hundred years ago with a woman named Anna may Jarvis.

Anna was born on May 1, 1864, just before the end of the Civil War and the assassination of President Lincoln. She was the daughter of a “minister”, which in American English means a church leader. She was a quiet girl who liked to study in school, but she liked everyone and was liked by everyone as well.

After she became an adult, Anna worked for a life insurance company in Philadephia, Pennsylvania- a city about halfway between new York City and Washington , D.C. Then, in 19065, just two weeks after Anna’s 42nd birthday, her mother died. It was the second Sunday in May.

In the months that followed, Anna began to change. No longer was she so gentle, so relaxed and easy-going. Instead she now had just one goal for her life-to have her mother and all other mothers honored throughout the whole world on the second Sunday of May.

After more than a year of careful planning, Anna arranged the first Mother’s Day church service, on May 10,1908, in Grafton, West Virginia. The next year Anna was able to get the city of Philadelphia, where she lived and worked, to proclaim the se cond Sunday of May as an official Mother’s Day—the first city to do so. After three more years, the state of West Virginia, where Anna’s mother had lived, made Mother’s Day a statewide observance –not a holiday in the normal sense, but still a day to remember what mothers have done for their children and society.

6 Which answer is right about Mother’s Day?

A in America, Mother’s Day is a holiday with a very long history.

B More and more countries are put aside their tradition of celebration Mother’s Day.

C In America, Mother’s Day is on the second Sunday in May.

D Throughout the world, mother’s Day is celebrated in the same day.

7 choose the right explanation of the word “observance” in the last paragraph.

A)remark made by people

B)action in accordance with custom

C)performance of certain tradition

D)notice paid widely

8 How ling in all had Anna spent to establish Mother’s Day in West Virginia?

A)from May 10, 1908 to May 10, 1911

B)for more than four years

C)for more than three years

D)for about three years

9 Choose the right understanding of this passage.

A)Anna was born just before the assassination of President Lincoln which

ended the Civil War.

B)Anna was a daughter of a minister which in English means a church

worker.

C)Anna’s mother’s death had done a little damage to her easy life.

D)The Mother’s Day celebrated in West Virginia is not a normal holiday,

but a day with special meaning.

10 According to the passage, what most probably happened in the paragraph following it?

A) The United States Congress proclaimed the Second in May as Mother’s Day forever in the United States.

B) Mother’s Day gradually became a commercial celebration.

C) Anna retired from her job with a fortune of over a hundred thousand dollars.

Lesson One: The Time Message Elwood N, Chapman 1 Time is tricky. It is difficult to control and easy to waste. When you look a head, you think you have more time than you need. For Example,at the beginning of a semester, you may feel that you have plenty of time on your hands, but toward the end of the term you may suddenly find that time is running out. You don't have enough time to cover all your duties (duty), so you get worried. What is the answer? Control! 2 Time is dangerous. If you don't control it, it will control you. I f you don't make it work fo r you, it will work against you. So you must become the master of time, not its servant. As a first-year college student, time management will be your number one Problem. 3 Time is valuable. Wasting time is a bad habit. It is like a drug. The more time you waste, the easier it is to go on wasting time. If seriously wish to get the most out of college, you must put the time message into practice. Message1. Control time from the beginning. 4 Time is today, not tomorrow or next week. Start your plan at the Beginning of the term. Message2. Get the notebook habit. 5 Go and buy a notebook today, Use it to plan your study time each day. Once a weekly study plan is prepared, follow the same pattern every week with small changes. Sunday is a good day to make the Plan for the following week.

Unit 1 1.My plan was to keep my ears open and my mouth shut and hope no one would notice I was a freshman. 2.Popularity was not so important: running with the crowd was no longer a law of survival. 3.This was my big chance to do my own thing, be my own woman — if I could get past my preoccupation with doing everything perfectly. Unit 3 1.Food to my countrymen is one of the ecstasies of life, to be thought about in advance; to be smothered with loving care throughout its preparation; and to have time lavished on it in the final pleasure of eating.

There is a widespread belief that people who get on in life may be successful not because they deserve it, but because of influential friends or the right background. Sometimes it may just be a comforting and harmless belief, while at the other extreme it can be very destructive. I once met a brilliant young engineer who worked in a chemical plant. Because of her knowledge and experience, she should have been promoted to Production Manager. Instead, the job went to a man who was totally unsuited for the post. Everyone knew that he only got it because he was politically acceptable to his superiors. This injustice demoralized the young engineer and many of her col leagues. Tt al so meant that the factory was much 1 ess efficient than i t could have been. All the same, we should not be pessimistic. More and more, the modern world depends on having people who are in the job because they are good enough, not just because their face fits. There is a story of a factory owner who sent for an engineer to see to a machine, which would not go. He examined it, then took out a hammer and tapped it, once. The machine started up immediately. When he presented his bill, the owner protested, "This can't be right! $100 just for tapping a machine with a hammer?z,The engineer wrote out a new bill: 〃For tapping a machine, $1; for knowing where to tap it, $99.〃 (1). It is believed that some people have succeeded in life because? A. they feel superior to others B. they are both influential and powerful c. they have some special advantages D.

UNIT 1 2、Indeed, we might feel as if we are suddenly awash in friends. Yet right before our eyes, we're also changing the way we conduct relationships. Face-to-face chatting is giving way to texting and messaging; people even prefer these electronic exchanges to, for instance, simply talking on a phone.Smaller circles of friends are being partially eclipsed by Facebook acquaintances routinely numbered in the hundreds. Amid these smaller trends, growing research suggests we could be entering a period of crisis for the entire concept of friendship. Where is all this leading modern-day society? Perhaps to a dark place, one where electronic stimuli slowly replace the joys of human contact. 8、No single person is at fault, of course. The pressures on friendship today are broad. They arise from the demands of work, say, or a general busyness that means we have less quality time for others. How many individuals would say that friendship is the most important thing in their lives, only to move thousands of miles across the continent to take up a better-paid job? 9、Of course, we learn how to make friends — or not — in our most formative years, as children. Recent studies on childhood, and how the contemporary life of the child affects friendships, are illuminating. Again, the general mood is one of concern, and a central conclusion often reached relates to a lack of what is called "unstructured time." 10、Structured time results from the way an average day is parceled up for our kids — time for school, time for homework, time for music practice, even time for play. Yet too often today, no period is left unstructured. After all, who these days lets his child just wander off down the street? But that is precisely the kind of fallow time so vital for deeper friendships. It's then that we simply "hang out," with no tasks, no

●Global Reading ?Structural Analysis of the Text This text is a piece of narrative writing, in which the author tells about her experience during the first year at university, which at first seems to be very awkward but turns out to be on the right track at last. In the text, three incidents are narrated by the author: 1) the first is about her going into the wrong classroom; 2) the second is about her falling down in the cafeteria; 3) the last is about her witnessing the same embarrassing fall happening to someone admired by her. Despite the differences between these three incidents, they actually revolve around one theme: The growth of the author, who is able to draw lessons from the mistakes she has made and finally succeeds in adjusting herself to the college life. ?Rhetorical Features of the Text Detailed descriptions of events are everywhere to be seen in this text, which is a dominant feature of narrative writing. Since the description of an event will involve a lot of movements or actions, compound sentences and compound-complex sentences have been used frequently in the text. For examples: I first began to wonder what I was doing on a college campus anyway when my parents drove off, leaving me standing pitifully in a parking lot, wanting nothing more than to find my way safely to my dorm room. (Paragraph 1) I settled into my chair and tried to assume the scientific pose of a biology major, bending slightly forward, tensing my arms in preparation for furious note-taking, and cursing under my breath. (Paragraph 5) ●Detailed Reading ?Questions 1. Why did the author have the impression that “everyone on campus was watching me”? (Paragraph 1) →The author, being over-sensitive, was uneasy with her identity as a freshman. She thought a new student would attract others’ attention, as what she did or said was liable to be too na?ve to be right. That feeling is a typical symptom of lacking in self-confidence. 2. Why did the author exclaim “What confidence, what reserve, what muscles!” when she saw the football player? (Paragraph 2) →College life was a new experience to the author. That she marveled at the real football player showed her excitement about her new life. And more importantly, her response revealed her admiration of an image which was almost exactly the opposite of her own. This admiration would later become the motivation of her change. 3. How many questions are used in Paragraphs 3, 4 and 5? Why does the author raise these

Unit 1 Changes in the Way We Live Mr. Doherty Builds His Dream Life Jim Doherty

Li Ming was a chemistry major, a charmer noted for his easygoing and humorous temperament. However, his English was so poor that he always barely got by. The teacher admonished him that his poor English would be an impediment to scholarship. What’s more, she showed her trump card: if Li Ming did not work hard. She would flunk him. He was also told that he should not learn English merely for the sake of his diploma. otherwise, even after graduation from university, he would still be semiliterate. Although Li Ming did not lose his composure, he was well aware that he had to settle down to work and follow through because his academic life was at stake. Linda, my good friend, has received good education and is both beautiful and elegant. She was not proposed to even when she was well over thirty. The reason is that she, as a career –oriented woman, is devoted to her work. Navigating between home and the company, she had hardly any time to socialize with people of the opposite sex. Her parents were gripped by anxiety at the thought of their daughter still remaining single at such an age. They did not know what to do and even consulted with some sociologists. But the situation began to change last month, when the headquarters of the company transferred Linda to the training department. On the new post, Linda met a man who tugged on her heartstrings for the first time.
