Part Ⅲ Listening Comprehension

Section A

Directions:In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations and 2 long conversations. At the end of each conversation, one or more questions will be asked about what was said. Both the

conversation and the questions will be spoken only once. After each question there will be a

pause. During the pause, you must read the four choices marked A), B), C) and D), and decide

which is the best answer. Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single

line through the centre.

11. W: Here are two empty seats.

M: Don?t you think they are too close to the movie screen?

Q: Where does this conversation most probably take place?

12. W: We are having a party at our house on the weekend of the 30th. Would you like to join us?

M: That sounds like a lot of fun. But I?ll need to check my schedule first.

Q: What does the man imply?

13. M: My shoulder?s been hurting for a couple of weeks ever since I moved that heavy desk by

myself.

W: If it hasn?t gotten better by now, you should go and see a doctor.

Q: How long has the man?s problem lasted?

14. W: I?ve been calling David for the past half hour, but I kept getting a busy signal.

M: Well, if you don?t get him soon, we?ll just have to go to the concert without him.

Q: Why is the woman trying to call David?

15. W: The professor?s voice is so soft that I can?t hear the end of the sentence.

M: It?s because the traffic outside cancels the effect of the microphone.

Q: What seems to be bothering the woman?

16. W: Do we have enough time for the 7:40 train if we get off right away?

M: No, it?s too late. It?s impossible for us to get to the railway station in 20 minutes.

Q: What time is it now?

17. W: I think the hostess really made every effort to see that the guests got the food and drinks

they wanted.

M: Yes, but we would have had a better time at the party if we had known some of the other guests.

Q: What can we conclude from the conversation?

18. W: Look at those beautiful parrots over there. I think you can teach them to talk.

M: Yes, but look at the price tag on them. I?d rather have a pigeon instead.

Q: What can be inferred from the conversation?

Now you will hear two long conversations.

Conversation One

W: Look at those fur coats! They?re rather lovely, aren?t they?

M: Well, quite so.

W: Just feel this one. It?s all soft and silky and it?s got a fabulous sheen. It must be sealskin.

M: It?s not sealskin. It?s squirrel.

W: Sealskin or squirrel —I?m terrible about furs. I never know the difference. I think I?ll try it on.

Oh no, perhaps not, it?s pretty expensive. It is beautiful, though.

M: Of course it is. Squirrels are beautiful creatures.

W: Now, how about this one? It?s fairly reasonable compared to the others, and it has one of those huge collars that frame the face. I always think they?re very flattering. What sort of fur is it in your opinion?

M: Since it?s fairly cheap, it?s probably a sort of rabbit.

W: Well, anyway, I?ll try it on. Here, hold my handbag for a moment, will you? I?m terrified of losing it. It?s the crocodile one my daddy gave me for my birthday. It cost the absolute earth. The trouble is that it?s so heavy that I don?t use it very often. Now, how does that look? I think it looks gorgeous —just like something out of a thirties film, all sophisticated and glamorous.

What do you think?

M: I think it?s horrible. I can hardly bear to look at it, let alone touch it. Honey, I want to say if you must waste our money, why don?t you buy a fake fur?

W: But I never buy synthetics, you know that. They?re horrible.

M: You?re quite happy to ignore the suffering those poor creatures have gone through to provide you with a fur coat or a crocodile handbag. You don?t care, do you?

W: Really, you are quite impossible! I?m pretty sure you wouldn?t refuse a fur coat if someone offered you one. And anyway, what about those shoes you?re wearing? The leather for those must have come from some animal or other.

M: They?re not leather. They?re plastic.

Questions 19 to 22 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

19. What is the possible relationship of the two speakers?

20. Which one is NOT true about the squirrel fur coat?

21. What can be inferred about the woman?s attitude towards the fur coat?

22. Why does NOT the man wear leather shoes?

Conversation Two

M: How time flies! It?s pay day again!

W: Yes, it is! You?re an engineer, aren?t you?

M: yes, I am.

W: So you must be earning decently, don?t you?

M: Well, just average.

W: What?s your salary then, may I ask?

M: Sure. My monthly pay is $2,500. What about yours?

W: I?m paid weekly, and it?s around $700 per week.

M: That means you can get $2,800 a month, right? That?s quite a sum of money.

W: Yes, but my pay is on an hourly basis and it?s not too much according to more-than-8-hour a day.

M: Then you must be working overtime.

W: That?s right. I work 24 hours? overtime a week. And the overtime pay is usually more than the regular pay.

M: So overtime has a bearing on how much you may make in a job. Don?t you think so?

W: Definitely. And the degree of responsibility in a job also has a great deal to do with the salary.

M: Yes. And so are other factors such as experience and fringe benefits.

W: No doubt about that. But anyway I have to work hard to earn my money.

Questions 23 to 25 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

23. How often is the man paid?

24. How many hours does the woman have to work a day at least?

25. What is NOT connected with the salary?

Section B

Directions:In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a

question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D) .Then

mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. Passage One

He was one of the greatest scientists the world has ever known, yet if I had to convey the essence of Albert Einstein in a single word, I would choose simplicity. Perhaps an anecdote will help. Once, caught in a downpour, he took off his hat and held it under his coat. Asked why, he explained, with admirable logic, that the rain would damage the hat, but his hair would be none the worse for its wetting. This talent for going instinctively to the heart of a matter and his extraordinary feeling for beauty were the secret of his major scientific discoveries.

I first met Albert Einstein in 1935, at the famous Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He had been among the first to be invited to the Institute, and was offered carte blanche as to salary. To the director?s dismay, Einstein asked for an impossible sum: It was far too small. The director had to plead with him to accept a larger salary.

I was in awe of Einstein, and hesitated before approaching him about some ideas I had been working on. When I finally knocked on his door and as I began to explain my ideas, he asked me to write the equations on the blackboard so he could see how they developed. Then came the gentle request, “Please go slowly. I do not understand things quickly.”This was from Einstein! Without any affectation! From then on, all vestiges of fear were gone.

Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard.

26. How large salary could Einstein ask when he was in the Institute for Advanced Study in

Princeton?

27. Why did Einstein ask the writer to go slowly in the third story?

28. Which word in the passage can describe Einstein according to the three stories?

Passage Two

On Fathers?Day, a study in Britain found surprisingly that about three quarters of those questioned said they saw themselves more as a breadwinner than they did as a father, while a similar number picked “husband”. Other roles which many of them felt they occupied were “gardener”, “driver”, “repairman” and “chef”.

Simon Bird said, “It?s worrying so many fathers see their role as putting food on the table, rather than as a father figure.”

“They don?t want to feel distanced from their family, but long office hours and lengthy daily commutes means millions of dads miss valuable time with their kids.”

“They feel under pressure to provide a decent standard of living for their family, but doing so is

potentially damaging their relationship with their children.”

“It?s a difficult balancing act, but it?s important to spend time with children and partners at the weekend and anytime during the day.”

“Trying to eat dinner around the table three or four times a week, playing football at the park or hearing the kids read will all help family bonding.”

“T he reason we want children and partners to celebrate Father s? Day this Sunday is to show fathers they are appreciated and for everything they do.”

The study, carried out between the 9th and 11th June, asked dads to select what they felt that their main role was within their own family unit.

Questions 29 to 31 are based on the passage you have just heard.

29. How many percent of dads thought themselves as a father according to the study?

30. What?s Simon Bird?s attitude towards the result of the study?

31. Why should children and partners celebrate Fathers? Day?

Passage Three

Today is April 14, 2010. A 13-year-old American boy from California Jordan Romero told reporters in Kathmandu that he wanted to climb Mount Qomolangma and he had a modest ambition —to pick a small piece of rock from the top of the world as a memento and wear it in a necklace. “I will not sell it and I will not give it to anyone. It is something for myself to say …this is a rock from the summit?,” he said.

Romero has already climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa and Mount McKinley in Alaska. Romero?s father, Paul, a critical care paramedic, said the boy understood the risk of climbing the giant mountain and was ready to take on the climb.

If he succeeds, Romero will become the youngest climber to scale the 8,850 meters (29,035 feet) Everest summit. Currently, a 16-year-old Nepali boy, Temba Tsheri Sherpa, holds the record of being the world?s youngest climber of Mount Qomolangma.

But Romero said he was not after setting climbing records, and Mount Qomolangma which straddles Nepal-China border was part of his goal to climb the highest mountains on all seven continents.

“It is just a goal,” he said confidently. “If I don?t succeed, I am okay. I will try again.”

Questions 32 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

32. What is Romero?s desire to pick a small piece of rock from the top of Mount Qomolangma?

33. What can Romero?s father do?

34. Who is the world?s youngest climber of Mount Qomolangma currently?

35. What?s Romero?s final goal?

Section C

Directions: In this section, you will hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. When the passage is read for the second time,

you are required to fill in the blanks numbered from 36 to 43 with the exact words you have just

heard. For blanks numbered from 44 to 46 you are required to fill in the missing information.

For these blanks, you can either use the exact words you have just heard or write down the main

points in you own words. Finally, when the passage is read for the third time, you should check

what you have written.

In honor of the World Cup, the Britain?s most luxurious bus stop has been given a

football-themed makeover. Kitted out with a sofa, cushions, a TV, a phone and flowers, the shelter attracts thousands of tourists every year —and even boasts a hot snacks stand. Its latest design follows a Valentine?s Day love-nest look and a winter wonderland theme.

The makeovers began after a local resident put a sofa and table inside the bus stop, but over the years extra facilities have been added, including a computer and a microwave. They are for decorative purposes only as the shelter had no electricity. In winter, fairy lights, powered by a generator, give it a festive glow.

Every year, 614 residents of the island will band together to decorate their stop. The tiny community?s Millennium celebration was held there.

Themes have ranged from outer space to colors. And this year, it pays homage to the World Cup.

Over the years, the shelter had picked up quite a reputation and now has its own website. The bus shelter even has its own visitor books.

大学英语四级模拟题四 Part One Reading Comprehension (2’×10 = 20’) Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Air pollution can spread from city to city. It even spreads from one country to another. Some northern European countries have had “black snow”from pollutants that have traveled through the air from other countries and have fallen with the snow. So air pollution is really a global problem. Air pollution can kill babies, older people, and those who have respiratory(呼吸的)diseases. As found in cities, air pollution increases the risks of certain lung diseases. Air pollution can cause both airplane and car accidents because it cuts down visibility (能见度). There are other possible health dangers from air pollution that we don’t know much about. For example, scientists are trying to find out whether chemicals that reach us from the air may cause changes in our cells. These changes might cause babies to be born with serious birth defects. Scientists are trying to learn how all the many chemicals are apt(易于的)to take into our bodies from air, water, food, and even medicines act together to affect our health and the way our bodies work. That is another reason why it is so important to begin to control pollution now instead of waiting until we learn all the answers. Air pollution costs us a lot of money. It corrodes(腐蚀)our buildings. It damages farm crops and forests. It has a destructive effect on our works of art. The cost of all this damage to our government is great. It would be much more worthwhile, both for us and for the government, to spend our tax dollars on air pollution control. 1. Air pollution may lead to airplane accidents because . A. it may cause pilots to be ill B. engines may fail from the air-borne dirt C. visibility is reduced D. it brings a lot of black snow 2. Scientists are trying to find a link between pollution and . A. intelligence levels B. birth problems C. man’s behavior D. the nervous system 3. Scientists have not yet determined . A. all of the effects of pollution on the human body B. how pollution can be controlled successfully C. when the atmosphere first became polluted D. how some snow becomes black 4. The author suggests that before air pollution becomes more serious, . A. factories will be forced to stop operating B. buildings should be protected C. the earth will begin to grow colder D. more money should be spent to solve the problem 5. We can conclude that . A. civilization may be ruined if pollution is not controlled B. pollution is more serious in Europe than it is in America C. most people do not know that pollution is a serious problem D. we should learn all the answers before we begin to control pollution Passage Two Stiletto heels could be banned from the workplace because of health and safety reasons, according to British Trade Union bosses. The Trade Union Congress, predominantly male, has proposed a motion arguing that high heels are disrespectful to women while they also contribute to long term injuries. They propose instead that women wear “sensible shoes”with an inch heel limit in an attempt to avoid future foot and back pain as well as injuries. The motion is due to be debated at next month’s conference. The motion states: “Congress believes high heels may look glamorous on the Hollywood catwalks but are completely in appropriate for the day-to-day working environment. Feet bear the burden of daily life, and for many workers prolonged standing, badly fitted footwear, and in particular high heels can be a hazard. Around two million days a year are lost through sickness as a result of lower limb disorders. Wearing high heels can cause long-term foot problems and also serious foot, knee and back pain and damaged joints. Many employers in the retail sector force women workers to wear high heels as part of their dress code. More must be done to raise awareness of this problem so that women workers and their feet are protected.” Nadline Dorries, the Tory Member of Parliament, however criticized the motion and said the extra height heels give women can help them when in the workplace. “I’m 5ft 3in and need every inch of my Christian Louboutin heels to look my male colleagues in the eye,”she said. “If high heels were banned in Westminster, no one would be able to find me. The Trade Union leaders need to get real, stop using obvious sexist tactics by discussing women’s

Colleges taking another look at value of merit-based aid Good grades and high tests scores still matter—a lot—to many colleges as they award financial aid. But with low-income students projected to make up an ever-larger share of the college-bound population in coming years, some schools are re-examining whether that aid, typically known as “merit aid”, is the most effective use of precious institutional dollars. George Washington University in Washington, D.C., for example, said last week that it would cut the value of its average merit scholarships by about one-third and reduce the number of recipients(接受者), pouring the savings, about $2.5 million, into need-based aid. Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., made a similar decision three years ago. Now, Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., says it will phase out merit scholarships altogether. During that time, it rose in US News & World Repor t’s ranking of the best liberal arts colleges, from 25 to 17. Merit aid, which benefited about 75 students a year, or about 4% of its student body, at a cost of about $ 1 million a year, “served us well,”Inzer says, but “to be
