On the English Translation of Texts of Tai Chi Chuan

太极拳是中华武术中重要的拳种之一, 已经有三百多年的历史。一直以来其深厚的文化底蕴和独特的社会功效使太极拳备受关注,在全球化浪潮的推动下, 太极拳已走出国门传播到全世界的150 多个国家和地区。2008 年北京奥运会上, 太极拳作为表演项目,再一次向世界展示了其无穷的魅力。目前中国正通过各种

国际比赛向世界推广太极拳。英语作为一种世界广泛使用的语言显示着其强大的交际功能, 因此汉英翻译成为太极拳对外传播的重要组成部分,是弘扬传统文化, 让太极拳走向世界的重要途径本文拟从太极拳文本的翻

译研究入手, 探讨太极拳文本的汉英翻译问题。

1 太极拳及相关书籍介绍

太极拳, 因其拳理以古太极图所含哲理为基础而得名。太极拳名称最早的记载见于王宗岳的《太极拳论》。关于太极拳的起源问题争论不断 ,现在广泛认可的是武术史学家唐豪的观点 , 最早的太极拳传习之地在河南温县的陈家沟 , 创编人是陈王廷。在三百多年的流传和发展过程中太极拳出现了不同的流派 , 主要包括陈氏、杨氏、吴氏、武氏和孙氏太极拳等 , 每一派都有推手、套路和套路器械等。尽管各门派的姿势及动作有所差别 , 但其依据的基本原理却是相同的 , 各套路的构成、动作顺序和练习要点

也都有诸多相通之处。

部分,其中有些书是太极拳学者独立编写而成 , 而另一些则由政府相关部门组织领域内人员集体编写。从内容上看 , 太极拳类书

籍可以分为三大类。第一类以阐释太极拳概念和哲理为主 , 书中

又有训练方法的介绍 , 旨在为新手和高级研习者提供训练的全面指导和建议。 2 太极拳英译文本的现状

如前所述 , 太极拳是武术中的一个重要的拳种 , 而目前, 体育类书籍中 , 有关太极拳和武术的书占据相当大一

含有大量植根于中国文化土壤的观点 , 而这些观点对大多数中国文化知识欠缺的外国人来说异常陌生。第二类主要以具体套路为例介绍太极拳的训练方法及动作要领 ,这类书籍文字比较简单简洁 , 配有插图来展示每一个具体的动作。第三类既有理论的讲解

在武术书

籍的英译文本中, 都包含有太极拳方面的内容, 因此本部分涉及

的对象既包含武术书籍的英译本又包括太极拳书籍的英译

本。武术的英译开始于20世纪中后期,译者主要是旅

居海外的华人练

习者和教练。1963 年李小龙《功夫》英译版本问世,开

创了武术

类书籍在海外发行的先河。书中介绍了不同的武术流派,

阴阳哲理以及基本动作的训练方法等。1973年, 黄文山

的《太极拳基础》

出版,针对性地介绍了蕴含着丰富民族文化内涵的太极拳

, 同时

国外定期发行英文杂志向世界介绍武术和太极拳, 如

《太极》《八卦》《走进功夫》等。

为了中国人向世界传播太极拳, 同时帮助来到中国

的外国学习者深入了解太极拳, 中国大陆也有武术和太

极拳方面的英文译本或英汉对照文本。1986年, 中国武

术研究院组织编写了国内第

本英文版武术教材。1987 年中国武术协会编写了第一

本国际武术裁判员培训课程教材。1988 年第一部常用

武术词汇英汉对照词典问世。20世纪90年代,随着国

际武术联合会的成立和世

界武术锦标赛的成功举办, 大量武术和太极拳文本的英

文版开始发行。国际武术联合会推动了英文版《国际武

术联合会章程》和

国际武术竞赛规则》的出版发行。香港地区也出现了

中国功夫系列的英汉对照本等。进入21世纪, 随着东

西方文化交流的扩大,

有关太极拳的英文文本大量出现, 既有太极拳训练方法指导的阅读类书籍,如《外国人学打太极拳:英汉对照》(2001 年北京语言文化大学出版社出版), 《学打太极拳: 英汉对照》(2009 年北京

大学出版社出版 ), 又有适应高校双语教学需要的教材 , 如《太极拳教学与训练英汉双语教程》 (2009 年北京体育大学出版社出版) 。此外,2004 年为全面介绍中国的武术文化 , 外文出版社和英

国图书出版社公司联合出版了武术系列丛书的英文版本共 20 部 ,

包括李德印著《太极拳》的英文版。还有一些在国外出版发行的英文文本 , 如 Taijiquan-Chen taiji 38 Form and

Applications(2003 年 Tuttle

性, 这使太极拳翻译陷入一种相对混乱的局面 , 并在一定程度上引起了交流的障碍。于是 , 如何提供太极拳文本高质量的英译本或英文版本成了翻译研究者和武术专家学者研究的一个重点。

3 太极拳文本汉英翻译的难点及存在的问题

太极拳是一种有效的健身方式 , 拳理与中国的哲学 , 宗教医学和艺术紧密相连 , 是一种极具民族特色的传统活动形式。许多太极拳术语对土生土长的中国人来说很容易理解 , 而其在英语中的对应表达却很难找到或是只是字面上的对应 , 英文读者却很难

理解。由于翻译中存在这些困难以及译者本身素质的差异 , 太极出版)。
