Many years ago, when we were a young couple with two small children, aged 2 and 4, we were practically penniless. My in-laws lived from hand to mouth, so we didn’t

There was so much that I can’t remember it all, but it was everything we needed to fix a wonderful dinner—everything except potatoes.

A little while later I remembered that I hadn’t taken the trash to barrel. By now it was dark, so I had to turn on the yard light— and that’s when I spotted a small bag of potatoes on the porch.

That dinner was the best I can remember.

We won’t able to thank our donators, though, because we never found out who had been so generous in helping a struggling young family. Whoever it was, we are forever grateful.

One of the latest trends(趋势) in American childcare is Chinese au pairs. Au Pair in Stamford, for example, has got increasing numbers of requests for Chinese au pairs from zero to around 4,000 since 2004. And that‘s true all across the country.

“I thought it would be very useful for him to learn Chinese at an early age,” Joseph Stocke, the managing director of a company, says of his 2-year-old son. “I would at least like to give him the chance to use the language in the future.” After only six months of being cared for by a 25-year-old woman from China, the boy can already understand basic Chinese daily expressions, his dad says.

Li Drake, a Chinese native raising two children in Minnesota with an American husband, had another reason for looking for an au pair from China: She didn‘t want her children to miss out on their roots. “Because I am Chinese, my husband and I wanted the children to keep exposed to(接触) the language and culture.” she says.

“Staying with a native speaker is bet ter for children than simply sitting in a classroom,” says Suzanne Flynn, a professor in language education of Children. “But parents must understand that just one year with au pair is unlikely to produce wonders. Complete mastery demands continued learnin g until the age of 10 or 12.”

The popularity of au pairs from china has been strengthened by the increasing numbers of American parents who want their children to learn Chinese. It is expected that American demand for au pairs will continue to rise in the next few years.

Biophysicist Hugh Herr was a climbing talent. He would spend summers with his family from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in distant destinations across the United States, including Alaska and the Rockies. From a very young age, Herr rapidly progressed to climbing steeper and steeper mountains.

When he was seventeen years old, Herr set out with a partner to climb Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. The highest peak in the northeastern United States, the mountain is famous for changeable and extreme weather.

Their intention was to take a route that included an 800-foot ice wall. But Herr and his climbing partner became lost near the top during a snowstorm and what was meant a single day turned into a four-day painful experience. They both suffered frostbite during negative twenty-degree weather. After their eventual rescue and months of effort by a medical team, both of Herr’s legs were cut off below the knee.

“When I was first fit with prostheses(假肢), about two months after the surgery, I was just shocked at how simple they were,” Herr said. “Basically, sticks if you would. I just said to myself, ‘You’re kidding me. This can’t be all that exists.’ But it was true. That was in 1982.”

Not discouraged by the initial assessment（最初的评估） that he would never climb mountains again, Herr started making new prostheses in a machine shop. He said that two weeks after being fit with traditional prostheses, he was rock climbing again. This time he was equipped with prostheses of his own design.

The same energy he brought to rock faces, Herr brought to the laboratory. In MIT’s Media Lab, Herr continues to push the boundaries of prosthetics（修复学）. His aim is twofold: to assist people with disabilities and to strengthen human capabilities, all with bionics(仿生学).

Justin Pratt, a certified prosthetist of the Osser Academy, said these kinds of motorized prosthetics are “of the future.”

“Bionics is pretty much the way it [prosthetics] is progressing,” he said, pointing out that bionics is becoming more attainable, Herr lifts his pant leg to show the w orld’s first bionic foot and calf system, which is sold by his startup company, called BiOM. It’s a complex device of shiny metal, wires and machinery.

I'd like to share with you my progresses in study in these three years. To be honest, I was not so good at my study when I came to high school， often feel tired out and at loss. Sometimes, I am even on the point of giving up. Therefore, my change happened when my teachers and my classmates as well as came to encourage me one day in Senior Two. It was their encouragement and my own thinking which resulted in my achievements in study finally.
