In 1995，Oseola McCarty gave a present of $150 000 to the University of Southern Mississippi. She wanted to help poor students. It was a very generous thing to do. But her friends and neighbors were surprised. McCarty was a good woman. She went to church. She was always friendly and helpful. But everyone in her town knew that McCarty was not rich. How did a poor 86-year-old woman have so much money? Oseola McCarty was born in 1918 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She had to leave school when she was eight years old to help her family. She took a job washing clothes. She earned only a few dollars a day. Oseola washed the clothes by hand. Then she hung the clothes to dry. She did this for nearly 80 years. In the 1960s, she bought an automatic washer and dryer. But she gave them away. She did not think they got the clothes clean enough! There is nothing worse than the sound of someone snoring (打呼噜) if you are trying to fall asleep. Maybe people laugh at you about the noise you make in your sleep. Snoring isn’t just noisy. Sometimes it is a sign of a serious medical problem that should be treated by a doctor.

Snoring can happen to anyone, young or old. Snoring happens when a person can’t move air freely through his or her nose and mouth during sleep. People usually find out they snore from the people who live with them. Kids may find out they snore from a brother or sister or from a friend who sleeps over. Snoring keeps other people awake and probably doesn’t let the snoring person get top quality rest, either.

People with this disorder often wake up with bad headaches and feel exhausted all day long. They may be very sleepy and have difficulty staying awake while having a conversation or even while driving. Kids affected by snoring may be angry easily and have difficulty concentrating, especially in school and with homework.

According to the government survey, there are hundreds of anti-snoring devices on the market. However, they may only work because they keep you awake. Other solutions include blocking the top of the bed up a few inches, changing sleeping positions and not eating a heavy meal or not drinking alcohol before bedtime. These kinds of “cures” may work only for someone who snores sometimes and lightly, or they may not work at all. If you can’t stop snoring or the snoring becomes heavy, it’s a good idea to see a doctor. Some people need to lose weight or change their diets to stop snoring. Sometimes medicines, or even surgeries are necessary.
