Rising above the names

I was shopping in the supermarket when I heard a young voice.

"Mom, come here! There's this lady here my size!"

The mother rushed to her son; then she turned to me to apologize.

I smiled and told her, "It's okay." Then I talked to the boy, "Hi, I'm Darryl Kramer. How are you ?"

He studied me from head to toe, and asked, "Are you a little mommy?"

"Yes, I have a son," I answered.

"Why are you so little?" he asked.

"It's the way I was born," I said. "Some people are little. Some are tall. I'm just not going to grow any bigger. " After I answered his other questions, I shook the boy's hand and left.

My life as a little person is filled with stories like that. I enjoy talking to children and explaining why I 1ook different from their parents.

It takes only one glance to see my uniqueness. I stand three feet nine inches tall. I was born an a chondroplasia dwarf (侏儒). Despite this, I did all the things other kids did when I was growing up.

I didn't realize how short I was until I started school. Some kids picked on me, calling me names. Then I knew. I began to hate the first day of school each year. New students would always stare at me as I struggled to climb the school bus stairs.

But I learned to smile and accept the fact that I was going to be noticed my whole life.I decided to make my uniqueness an advantage rather than a disadvantage. What I lacked in height, I made up for in personality.

I'm 47 now, and the stares have not diminished as I've grown older. People are amazed when they see me driving. I try to keep a good attitude. When people are rude, I remind myself, "Look what else I have -- a great family, nice friends. "

It's the children's questions that make my life special. I enjoy answering their questions. My hope is that I will encourage them to accept their peers ( a person of the same age, class, position, etc. ), whatever size and shape they come in, and treat them with respect.

The crowd cheered as the young man walked across the stage to receive his award as the company's top producer. He looked over the audience and trembled, and there was a clear pause that brought a silence to the room. It took him a moment to control himself.

"The last three months hit me pretty hard," he began. "And I feel the need to share a piece of my story though I'm not sure why. A friend called me about his new marketing system, an outbound (发往外国的) fax(传真)service that could reach thousands of potential customers at very little cost. I checked it out, got excited and accepted it. After thousands of faxes, it seemed that what I did was illegal . I was punished a dollar for every one sent out.

"I failed to do proper research, and didn't pay attention to the details. Now I am heavily in debt. As some of you know, I recently move up here from down south. I stored my stuff (资料)in my old office, which I closed down. When I drove back to pick it all up, I found that everything except my computer and the clothes I brought with me was gone."

He continued, "I drive a sports car. I love that car. One day while driving it, I stepped on

the accelerator (油门), lost control at 85 miles an hour, and hit the guard rail. I damaged my car very badly."

"In three months, I got charged, lost everything I owned, and damaged my car. We all face challenges," he smiled. "I guess I wanted to share mine with you. Thanks for listening. " He left to a standing ovation (鼓掌).

Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it ? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power? Start writing.

By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic behind what you think, feel,or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your“explain power”.

Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many,if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep a journal (日志)of your ideas the next time you’re working on a big project, you’11 probably have more success.

Want to understand a topic? Write a book about it.That’s an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it,and you will understand it better. Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem---why you want to solve it,and why it is worth solving, and yo u’re half-way there.

Writers don’t always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help bring you to all understanding. Give it a try.

53.What would be the best title for the passage?

A. A Way on How to Write

B. Increase Your Brain Power Through Writing

C. Brain Power Helps Improve Your Writing

D. How to Start Your Writing

54.According to the passage, writing can help you a lot EXCEPT_________.

A. to increase your brain power

B. to improve the ability to remember

C. to develop your interest in study

D. to strengthen the understanding of a topic

55.If a writer writes something, it means that he or she_________.

A. has understood it very well

B. needs to understand it better

C. wants to remember it in his or her mind

D. is testing his or her new ideas

56.The underline d sentence “You’re half-way there” in the fourth paragraph means

that_________.

A. you are already successful

B. there is a long way for you to go to reach your goal

C. you are left wondering what to do

D. you have been on the way to success

D

Do you always forget where you placed your keys or your purse? What was the name of the movie you saw last week? The major cause of your forgetfulness may be linked to what you store in your body, not in your short-term memory bank.

Tests continue to show that people with enough Vitamin B-2 do well in memory exams. The "B" could stand for "brain", if you're one of many with limited instant recall. And the number one source of that vitamin is sunflower seeds.

Even when you're sleeping or relaxing, your brain is still at work. Although it makes up just two percent of your total body weight, it uses up to 30 % of the calories you take in each day. For it to work properly, it must be fed. Even if you're not a breakfast eater, that meal is the best way to prepare your brain for the day. A quick and easy English muffin with peanut and butter in it, a glass of milk, and an orange, might be what your brain may be asking you the first thing in the morning when you feel your head is in a fog. Having sunflower seeds and fruit between meals adds more muscle to that hungry, demanding organ. Vitamin B-1 also helps the memory, and that is found in eggs, meats and nuts. In Chinese culture, walnuts (核桃) are known as the fruit for a long life because it is believed that they feed both the kidneys and the brain. And according to Chinese culture, if you keep those two important organs in good working order, you'll live longer.

However forgetful you are, just keep in mind the letter "B", which will help you to "bear in mind almost everything" even on those days when life's challenges are sending you in a billion directions.

57. The underlined word "muffin" in the third paragraph probably means_________.

A. menu

B. dinner

C. calorie

D. cookie

58. In the passage, Chinese culture is mentioned to____________.

A. support the idea of long life

B. show the importance of vitamin B-1

C. warn the readers of two organs

D. remind us of walnuts and sunflower seeds

59. What can we conclude from the passage?

A. What we eat seems more important than what we learn in terms of memory.

B. Two percent of our brain is still active when we are sleeping or relaxing.

C. It doesn't make much difference to our brain whether we have breakfast or not.

D. Life's challenges have no effect on our memory, if dealt with in a proper way.

60. The best title for the passage could be_______________.

A. Human of Memory Loss

B. Vitamin B-2 and Memory

C. Forgetful? But not Brain

D. Chinese Culture of Long Life

of goods, conducted by an officially approved auctioneer. He asks the crowd assembled in the auction-room to make offers, or "bids", for the various items on sale. He encourages buyers to bid higher figures, and finally names the highest bidder as the buyer of the good. This is called "knocking down" the goods, for the bidding

The ancient Roman probably invented sales by auction, and the English word comes from the Latin auction, meaning "increase". The Romans usually sold in this way the goods taken in war. In England in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, goods were often sold "by the candle", a short candle was lit by the auctioneer, and bids could be made while it stayed

qualities vary are sold by auction. Among these are coffee

skins, wool, tea, furs, silk and wines. Auction sales are also usual for land and property.

and where and when they can be viewed by potential buyers. If the advertisement cannot give full details, catalogues are printed, and each group of goods to be sold together called a "lot" is usually given a number. The auctioneer need not begin with LOT I and continue in the order of numbers, he may wait until he notices the fact that certain buyers are in the room

The auctioneer's services are paid for in the form of a percentage of the price the goods are sold for. The auctioneer therefore has a direct interest in pushing up the bidding as high as possible. He will not waste time by starting the bidding too low. He will also play on the opponents among his buyers and succeed in getting a high price by encouraging two business competitors to bid against each other.

One possible version:

May I have your attention, please?

My topic today is about copying other’s homework.

As we all know, some students copy other’s homework. On the one hand, we students have to do masses of homework both at home and at school. Sometimes we do have some problems, too hard to work out. On the other hand, lazy and uninterested in their lessons, some students copy others’ homework not only to finish the assignments but also please their teachers.

In a word, copying others’ homework is a bad habit. For one thing, it’s against the school rules. Being students, we should be honest and work hard. If we have difficulties, we can turn to teachers and classmates for help. For another, copying others’homework too often, we will lose the ability that can help us to think.
