The famous American gorilla (大猩猩) expert Diane Fossey had a completely new way to study gorillas —she pretended (假装) to be one of them. She copied their actions and way of life — eating plants and getting down on her hands and knees to walk the way a gorilla does. It was a new relationship.

Diane Fossey was murdered in Rwanda in 1985 and her story was made into the popular film Gorillas in the Mist. It was a long way from King Kong, which is about a gorilla as a monster (a frightening animal), and helped to show a new idea: the real monster is man, while the gorilla is to be admired (仰慕；钦佩).

Today there are thought to be around 48,000 lowland gorillas and maybe 400 — 500 mountain gorillas in the wild. From the Congo in West Africa, to Rwanda and Uganda further east, they are endangered (put in a situation in which they could be harmed or damaged) by hunting and by the cutting down of their forest homes.

Some time ago, I found in my letterbox a little magazine from the World Wide Fund for Nature. It had two photos side by side. One was of a young gorilla. “This is a species (物种) of mammal (哺乳类动物),” said the words below it. “It is being destroyed by man. The Americans believe that anybody can become President of the United States. In a recent Hollywood comedy (喜剧), that is exactly what happens.

Dave Kovic, played by Kevin Kline, is a kind-hearted man who runs a business that finds people jobs. He leads a typical (典型的) American way of life, except for one thing — he looks exactly like the President, Bill Mitchell. In fact, the only thing that makes him different from the nation’s leader is that he is very nice!

The president has started using look-alikes during some public appearances. Dave is offered a chance to “serve his country” by becoming one. However, things go wrong. The President becomes very ill and Dave ends up acting as the President forever (永远).

Director (导演) Ivan Reitman, who made the popular and successful comedies like Twins, Ghostbusters and Legal Eagles, could have gone for easy laughs by making fun of the American government. Instead, Dave is an attractive (吸引人的) comedy about an ordinary (平凡的) man in extraordinary (非凡的) situations. Kevin Kline gives a double performance (表演) as Dave and the President, and Sigourney Weaver is at her best as his First Lady. The love story that develops between her role and Dave is a real classic (经典).

Think about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources (来源), as well as one of the oldest. Evidence shows that windmills (风车) began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power.

For many centuries, people used windmills to grind (磨碎) wheat into flour or pump (抽出) water from deep underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in remote areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by the 1940s when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were rarely used.

During the 1970s, people started becoming concerned about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity. People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would not last forever. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher costs. Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind.

Songs that make our hearts happy can make them stronger too, US researchers reported on Tuesday.

They found that when people listened to their favorite music, their blood vessels（血管）dilated in much the same way as when they are laughing, or taking blood medications.

“We have a pretty impressive effect,” said Dr Michael Miller, director of preventive cardiology（心脏病学）at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

“Blood vessel diameter improved,” he said. “The vessel opened up pretty significantly. You can see the vessels opening up with other activiti es such as exercise.” A similar effect is seen with drugs such as statins.

When blood vessels open up more, blood flows more smoothly and is less likely to form the clots（凝块）that cause heart attacks and strokes. “We are not saying to stop your statins or not to exercise but rather to add this to an overall program of heart health,” said Miller, who presented his findings to a meeting of the American Heart Association in New Orleans.

Miller's team tested 10 healthy, non-smoking men and women, who were told to bring their favorite music. They spent half an hour listening to the recordings and half an hour listening to music they said made them feel anxious while the researchers did some tests designed to show blood vessel function.

Compared to their normal baseline measurements, blood vessel diameter increased 26 percent on average when the volunteers heard their joyful music. Listening to music they disliked — in most cases in this group heavy metal — blood vessels narrowed by six percent, Miller said.

Mil ler said he came up with the idea after discovering that laughter caused blood to literally flow more smoothly. “I asked myself what other things make us feel really good, besides calories from dark chocolate of course. Music came to mind. . . . It makes m e feel really good,” he said.

Most of the volunteers chose country music but Miller said the style is not so important rather than what pleases each individual.

One day, my friend Jimmy told me a story. Farmer Joe was in his cart when he was hit by a truck．He decided his injuries from the accident were serious enough to take the trucking company (which caused the accident) to court. In China children are the centre of each family. All parents wish their children, especially senior high students, could go to top universities and have a bright future. So they always expect their children to make full use of their time to study. They don't allow them to watch TV, play the computer games or go out to play with their friends.
