Madame Curie was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1867, when Poland was controlled by Russia. Her parents were teachers, and she learned at an early age the importance of education.

Her mother died when she was young, and when her father was caught because of teaching Polish, which had been made illegal(非法的) under the Russian government, she had to get a job. Years later she went to Paris to study physics and math. After graduation, she started the research on magnetism(磁力学).

For the research she wanted to do, she needed more space than her small lab. A friend introduced her to Pierre Curie, another young scientist, who had some extra room. Not only did Marie move her equipment into his lab, but also she and Pierre fell in love and got married. For the discovery of radium, Marie and Pierre won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903. Also for this work, she was given the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911.

During the first World War, Marie Curie knew that taking soldiers to a hospital when they needed operations was not always possible, so she designed the first moving X-ray machine and traveled with it along the front lines during the war.

On July 4th, 1934, Marie Curie died in Paris, killed by one of her own experiments. For her struggles, she received two Nobel Prizes —the first woman to win even one. Thanks to the knowledge she gained, thousands of lives have been saved.

Great knowledge, however, is often a two-edged sword. Without the work she did we might not have many modern cancer treatments, or atomic(原子的)clocks, or even the computers we use every day. But through her work with radioactivity she can also be considered as the mother of the atomic bomb.

56. Madame Curie’s father was arrested because _______.

A. he broke the law in Poland

B. he taught Russian in Poland

C. he went to Russia without permission

D. he taught Polish which was forbidden by Russia

57. During World War I, Madame Curie ______.

A. went to hospitals to treat wounded soldiers

B. invented the earliest moving X-ray machine

C. took a lot of soldiers to hospitals

D. traveled and made records of the wounded soldiers

58. From the passage we can infer that Madame Curie __________.

A. married Pierre for a larger lab

B. struggled for the two Nobel Prizes all her life

C. did some experiments which were harmful to her health

D. devoted her life to making inventions that would help soldiers

59. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph shows that Madame Curie __________.

A. could provide cancer treatments at that time

B. could make atomic bombs that brought danger

C. changed people’s lifestyles through her inventions

D. discovered something that had both advantages and disadvantages

Spring is a wonderful season to celebrate rebirth and new life. The long, cold winter is over. The weather is warmer and sunnier. The trees again have leaves and the flowers are blooming. The season represents hope, joy and beauty. At this time, many people think of this classical music piece —Spring, which shows happiness. Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi wrote it in 1700s.

However, not all songs about spring show happiness. This song written and sung by K.D. Lang is about dreaming of spring in cold dark places. She recorded I Dream of Spring in 2008.

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein wrote It Might as Well Be Spring for the movie State Fairin 1945. Frank Sinatra sings it. It is a feeling of restlessness or excitement brought on by the coming of spring. Richard Rodgers also wrote Spring Is Here, this time with Lorenz Hart. Ella Fitzgerald sings this song about feeling lonely during this season.

Frank Loesser wrote the sad song, Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year. Why has the season been delayed? Because the singer’s lover had l eft her. Sarah Vaughn released(发行)her version of the song in 1953.

By now you may be thinking, "Enough with the sad songs, already!" OK, then how about a cowboy song? Gene Autry was one of most famous singing cowboys of America. He recorded When It’s Springtime in the Rockies in 1937.

And finally, we’ll leave you with a sunny song called Up Jumped Spring. Freddie Hubbard wrote this jazz song in 1977 and Billy Taylor Trio performs it.

Your children’s teacher will be providing extra time for test preparation. This school year’s test will be held on January 8 and 9. The test preparation time is open to all students, and we strongly encourage your children to attend.

This year we are changing the time for our test preparation: it will be on Thursday mornings from 8:10 to 8:50. This helps children who ride the bus and cannot stay for the after-school period. It also helps avoid conflicts with after-school activities.

Danielle and Marina will be working with the recent new test takers 6 days on the following Thursdays: 15th, Nov.; 29th, Nov.; 6th, Dec.; 13th, Dec.; 20th, Dec. and 3rd, Jan.

Besides the test preparation lectures on these days, teachers are already putting test preparation into their usual courses. We can help our students to be both skillful and whole-hearted readers and test takers —after all, we all know that the best test preparation is also a good reading and writing training.

What can you do at home? Again, the best and most effective test preparation for the ELA test is reading and more reading. The research is quite clear —students who do well in the tests are those who are good readers. Reading not only builds reading ability, it also helps build confidence. But do discourage your children from spending too much time on books that are too hard or even a bit too hard. Children best develop comprehension skills when they are reading books just right for them (too easy doesn’t hurt here either).

Finally, on Friday, December 7th, we will have a morning lecture on the ELA. Please pay attention!

64. The time for test preparation has been changed to ____.

66. Parents should _________ at home.

A. prepare good meals for their children

B. read more books with their children

C. ask their children not to spend too much time on reading

D. encourage their children to read more books fit for them

67. Why did the school encourage all the students to take part in the test preparation?

A. Test preparation is what they always do.

B. The students will learn what will be included in the final exam.

C. Test preparation helps students to be more interested in reading and confident.

D. The test is a long way off and there are better things to do.

Twelve years ago, a young traveler named Rhett Butler from San Francisco, California, visited the Sabah rainforest on Malaysian Borneo. In the rainforest, he watched a bird flying through the trees. The beautiful sight left quite an impression on him. But weeks later, back home, Rhett Butler got the news that trees in the area he visited had been cut down.

That experience led Rhett Butler to write a book about rainforests and threats to their existence(存在) . But he did not publish the book. Instead, in 1999, he created a website, using his research for the book. The site is https://www.docsj.com/doc/5018900507.html,. His purpose was to inform the public of tropical rainforests. But the subject quickly developed. As a former businessman, he became a respected writer of science and environmental stories.

The popularity of https://www.docsj.com/doc/5018900507.html, attracted advertisers. Small ads on the site pay for its operations. https://www.docsj.com/doc/5018900507.html, has grown and led to other sites, for example, https://www.docsj.com/doc/5018900507.html,, a site for children; https://www.docsj.com/doc/5018900507.html,, which is about the island that Rhett Butler called his favorite place.

To keep his website going, he travels around the world on several major trips each year. His working tools are a laptop computer, cameras and some diving equipment. He often calls on experts for information. For example, he interviewed Alison Jolly, a top expert on lemurs (狐猴). He interviewed Rodney Jackson, a biologist who established the Snow Leopard Conservancy.

Stories like these have made Mongabay a favorite place on the Internet for researchers, students and teachers. In April, https://www.docsj.com/doc/5018900507.html, named it one of the fifteen top climate and environment websites in the world.

A portable lung(便携式人工肺), which could help those with breathing problems lead a normal life, is being developed by scientists at Swansea University in the UK.

The portable lung works just like a lung in the body —getting oxygen (O2) into and carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the blood. Professor Bill John came up with the idea after his son died of lung disease. "It is important that we make something which will help people, who have to sit in a wheelchair with an oxygen bottle, walk around by themselves," he said.

It is said that this portable lung with the size of a glasses-case could give patients another choice apart from a lung transplant (移植). But scientists say it will be many years before it is put into use, even for a trial stage. Lung patients, who have seen how it would work, have welcomed the research.

According to the British Lung Foundation, one person in every seven in the UK is affected by lung disease —about 8 million people. Figures also show that on March 6th, 2009, there are 217 people on the waiting list for lung transplants. "Now that scientists are developing a portable artificial lung and have announced that in the long term the artificial lung could offer more choice to lung patients, gives great hope to those who suffer from lung diseases," one of the patients said.

Although the research has been welcomed by leading charities, they also say that they should highlight (强调) the length of time it will be before a portable lung comes into use.

Patient Elizabeth Spence from Swansea has refused the double lung transplant she needs but remains hopeful that one day the new "lung" could help her.

72. We learn from the passage that the "portable lung"____.

A. is in a trial stage at present

B. is used in lung transplants

C. is as large as an oxygen bottle

D. copies the function of a real lung

73. According to the passage, in the UK _______.

A. people welcome all medical research

B. medical scientists are more creative

C. there are about 56 million people in total

D. people with lung diseases support lung transplants

74. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. The portable lung was once on display.

B. The portable lung was created by Professor Bill John’s son.

C. Leading charities are against research into portable lungs.

D. 217 people have benefited from research into portable lungs.

75. According to the passage, the author_________.

A. supports the research

B. argues against the research

C. persuades people to use the portable lung

D. introduces the portable lung in a fair way

It sounds reasonable to do it this way. It took much time to do this. It makes us excited to think about that. Such questions are to be avoided. What he said proved to be true. He seems to be ill. She is a very nice person to work with. ①表目的常用in order to, so as to,等结构但so as to只能放在主句之后。 Check your homework so as to avoid mistakes. She goes home (in order) to see her grandmother every week. ②表结果常用only to do, enough to do, too…to do等句型,不定式短语作结果状语具有 “意料之外”之意。 He is too excited to speak anything.

Unit 5 ELIAS` STORY My name is Elias.I am a poor black worker in South Africa. The time when I first met Nelson Mandela was a very difficult period of my life.I was twelve years old. It was in 1952 and Mandela was the black lawyer to whom I went for advice. He offered guidance to poor black people on their legal problems. He was generous with his time, for which I was grateful. I needed his help because I had very little education.I began school at six. The school where I studied for only two years was three kilometers away.I had to leave because my family could not continue to pay the school fees and the bus fare. I could not read or write well. After trying hard,I got a job in a gold mine. However, this was a time when one had got to have a passbook to live in Johannesburg.Sadly I did not have it because I was not born there, and I worried about whether I would become out of work. The day when Nelson Mandela helped me was one of my happiest. He told me how to get the correct papers so I could stay in Johannesburg.I became more hopeful about my future.I never forgot how kind Mandela was. When he organized the ANC Youth League, I joined it as soon as I could. He said:"The last thirty years have seen the greatest number of laws stopping our rights and progress, until today we have reached a stage where we have almost no rights at all.” It was the truth.Black people could not vote or choose their leaders. They could not get the jobs they wanted. The parts of town in which they had to live were decided by white people. The places outside the towns where they were sent to live were the poorest parts of South Africa. No one could grow food there .In fact as Nelson Mandela said:“…we were put into a position in which we had either to accept we were less important or fight the government. We chose to attack the laws.We first broke the law in a way which was peaceful; when this was not allowed…only then did we decide to answer violence with violence.…… As a matter of fact, I do not like violence…but in 1963 I helped him blow up some government buildings. It was very dangerous because if I was caught I could be put in prison. But I was happy to help because I knew it would help us achieve our dream of making black and white people equal. JOHN SNOW DEFEATS “KING CHOLERA John Snow was a famous doctor in London—so expert, indeed, that he attended Queen Victoria as her personal physician. But he became inspired when he thought about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly disease of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousands of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted to face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never be controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera killed people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person died. 斯洛对霍乱致人死地的两种推测都很感兴趣。一种看法是霍乱病毒在空气中繁殖着,像一股危险的气体到处漂浮,直到找到病毒的受害者为止。第二种看法是人们在吃饭的时候把这种病毒引入体内的。病从胃里发作而迅速殃及全身,患者就会很快地死去。 John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed evidence. So when another outbreak hit London in 1845, he was ready to begin his enquiry. As the disease spread quickly through poor neighborhoods, he began to gather information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why. 斯洛推测第二种说法是正确的,但他需要证据。因此,在1854 年伦敦再次暴发霍乱的时候,约翰·斯洛着手准备对此进行调研。当霍乱在贫民区迅速蔓延的时候,约翰·斯洛就开始收集资料。他发现特别在两条街道上霍乱流行的很严重,在10 天之内就死去了500 多人。他决心要查明原因。 First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had lived. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the deaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16,37, 38 and 40) . He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he made further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water from the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. He immediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle from the pump so that it could not be used. Soon
