Reading-Pre-reading

Bionic boots are high-tech boots that can help you reach running speeds comparable to professional athletes like Usain Bolt. The extremely light boots are just like springs inspired by the Achilles tendon (跟腱) of ostriches (鸵鸟) or Kangaroos, lending the wearer more force while running, with a spring in their stride(大步;步幅).

The boots are invented by Keahi Seymour, who has always been fascinated by the effortless run of ostriches (鸵鸟), the fastest running birds on the planet, with a top speed of 45mph. He has been working on this kind of shoes for several years, producing dozens of prototypes (模型) in the process.

“The bionic boots may be the transportation in the future,” he explain ed. “They are meant to make a man run faster, inspired by the fast land animals. The boots are made up of a carbon fiber composite exoskeleton (外骨骼), and also aircraft-grade aluminum. So the lightest materials were applied to providing the most efficient fo rm of transportation.”

Seymour recently showed the capabilities (能力) of his latest version of bionic

boots at the Maker Faire in New York. They can help anyone reach speeds of up to25mph, which is the same speed as a slowly moving car. In comparison, Usain Bolt, the world's fastest man, has clocked a top speed of 27.44mph.

Not just watching a film ...

RealCine — virtual①reality②for everyone

This presentation③will give you some information about RealCine: how it works, why it is better than a film, and how it can be used in other ways. The RealCine experience will amaze④you, and you will agree that this is an extraordinary technology that deserves to be developed further⑤.

The technology behind RealCine is virtual reality (VR). Unlike a film, where a passive audience watches and hears what is happening on a screen⑥, RealCine puts you into the action and connects with your senses of sight, hearing, smell and touch in an active way. Imagine that a VR user⑦‘goes’ sightseeing⑧ in the Himalayas. Not only will he or she feel every step of climbing Mount Qomolangma, but the user will also experience⑨the cold, smells, sights and sounds of the surrounding environment; he or she will enjoy a feeling of happiness⑩and a sense of achievement ? upon reaching the top?.

RealCine works by making the users feel that they are really in a new world —a world that does not exist except in a computer program. To achieve this, special VR headsets? are designed to allow the users to see in 3-D? and hear the sound all around them. The movements of the headset indicate the direction in which the user wants to go. The user also wea rs special gloves so he or she can ‘touch’ the people and objects that he or she sees. To add to? the virtual world of RealCine, the headsets even have small openings that give out smells? to match the environment. Both the headsets and the gloves are connected to? a computer network? in the VR studio?.

In scientific studies it has been shown that VR can be a good treatment for people who have social? problems. In one case○21, a teenager who was afraid of talking and playing with his schoolmates was treated with VR. In the world created by RealCine○22,

An argument has been put forward○26 that some users will be disappointed by

When you actually think that humans evolved from apes, it's very clear just how different we actually look from our ancient ancestors. Even compared to the earliest Homo sapiens (智人), we look much, much different.

So, it would be foolish of us to assume that the human species is all done evolving and that humans will look the way they do now forever!

Artist Nickolay Lamm partnered with a Dr.Alan Kwan, a computational geneticist, to come up with an idea of what humans could look like 20,000, 60,000, and 100,000

years in the future. They put their heads together and came up with some (literally) eye-popping digital renderings.

Dr.Kwan based his ideas about the humans of the future's looks by predicting what their living environments might be like, and researching how humans have evolved over the last 500 to 700 years. He believes that humans might have a larger forehead because our foreheads are currently much bigger than they were in the 1300s; why wouldn't they keep growing?

The two also came up with the idea that humans will have enormous eyes because they will be traveling in the darkness of spare much more. If humans of the future are spending much more time in darkness, their eyes would have to evolve to be larger to be more sensitive to light and see better.

Along with larger eyes and foreheads, Dr. Kwan and Lamm believe general size of human heads will increase as their brains become larger, and that their skin tone will be darker to protect them against UV rays.

But these predictions are just predictions. There is a large chance that their predictions won't end up being correct at all, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't think about what our future family members will look like.

What do you think humans will look like in the future? Will we have claws? Will we be living in outer space? Let us know what you think the future holds for the human species!

When you feel disappointed, you should know it is natural and normal, and everyone will experience it to some extent in their life. Sometimes life deals us a difficult hand, and events and trials arise that we have no control over. Other times it is our own actions themselves that cause our trials. Regardless of the nature of our trials, disappointment is part of life's journey and how we deal with it will largely determine the quality of our life. Here are some steps to help us to make our journey more enjoyable.

Firstly, redefine our rules. It is assumed that everyone has an internal “rule” in their mind. If our internal rules are too perfect, then they will discourage us greatly. For example, if we have a rule that says we need to be perfect, it is likely that we will spend a large amount of time feeling sad and disappointed. So when we feel disappointed, it is wise to review and redefine our rules. Want an example of an encouraging rule? Try this one: I am happy and I am successful since I have made my greatest efforts.

Secondly, remind ourselves now and then of the reasons why we are seeking the very goal. As a matter of fact, there are many cases where we have forgotten our original purposes along the way. So it is of great help to remember the reasons why

we are committed to a path in the first place when we feel down. By revisiting those reasons, we will likely renew our commitment and not get hung up on the disappointment of the moment.

Thirdly, think about our larger vision and recommit to it. Disappointment is merely a setback on what will eventually be a great and inspiring journey. So when we have those momentary setbacks, it is helpful to think about our larger vision and recommit to it. In our larger vision, therefore, a disappointment is a very valuable experience, which serves as a good educator and makes us more able to meet the challenges of the future.

Finally, reset and have a new start. Resetting and starting anew prevents us from abandoning ourselves to self-pity and forces us to get up and move forward. Don't live in the past. Take what the past has taught us and keep moving. Wake up the very next day as if our whole life is ahead of us and we have the chance to start fresh. Nothing that happened in the past can stop us from creating the life that we have always desired or from accomplishing the goals that we are seeking.

Unit 16 Stories Warm-up Tapescript 1 It was a dark and foggy night. We drove and drove. At midnight, just as we thought we were lost, we saw a light behind some trees. As we got nearer, we could see a house. It looked abandoned. We knocked on the heavy door. It opened slowly. A tall man dressed entirely in black stood there. “Good evening,” he said in a slow, deep voice. “I've been expecting you.” 2 We were travelling through deep space at the speed of light. Suddenly, the spaceship slowed down and immediately the system came into view – a bright star with twenty or more planets. One of these would be our new home, five light years from our own planet. 3 One of my earliest memories is of my father running along the beach with our dog, Tess. I must have been about three years old. I remember the dog jumping up on me and knocking me over into the water. 4 The man lay on the ground next to a white truck. There was no doubt. He was dead. I quickly looked in the pockets of his jacket – some money, a handkerchief and a theatre ticket with a Chicago phone number written on it. Three murders in three weeks and the victims all killed in the same way.

A Couch Potato Forty-three-year-old Brian Blakey from Birmingham is sitting on his sofa and telling me about his perfect day. When I wake up I don't get up immediately. I turn on the television and watch the children's programmes and old movies until about half-past ten. Then I get up, go downstairs and switch on the TV in the living room. For lunch, I have biscuits and a glass of milk, and I watch the news. In the afternoon, I often watch another old film – they're showing some good ones at the moment. In the evenings, I often watch TV series or sport and the news again. I like the main news at six o'clock. At nine thirty, if there is a good play on BBC 2, I switch over and watch it. Then at night, I watch more films and I usually switch off the TV at about two o'clock. I never watch TV all night. I watch TV for sixteen or seventeen hours a day. I also do some exercise every day. I take Tina, the dog, for a walk every afternoon. I don't go far, of course. I walk to the wall outside my house. I always take my portable TV and I sit on the stone wall while the dog walks round in a circle. Of course, I couldn't live this lifestyle without a good wife. She's not here now because she's working, but she always makes my meals. We haven't got much money, you know, but we're happy. Sit down and watch TV. Here's the remote control. You've got the world at your feet. And in your hand. Great! A Workaholic Thirty-six-year-old Bob Black is sitting at his desk and working his way through his paperwork. I normally wake up about five minutes before my alarm clock goes off. As soon as I hear my alarm clock, I jump out of my bed. It takes me less than fifteen minutes to wash, get changed, have breakfast, leave home and get on a bus. I am always the first person to get to the office. The mornings are always very busy and the afternoons are even busier! Meetings and phone calls take up a large part of the day. Every minute
