Castle Dale is a small town in central Utah. My grandpa’s farm is a few miles to the north. I grew up there. Milking a cow, feeding the chickens and cutting firewood were daily routines. Grandpa had me carrying a broom to do snow cleaning when it was actually taller than I was. This was the work kids like me learned to do at a young age.

I was tall, very tall at a really young age. My unusual height caused people to look, ask questions, laugh, tease, and sometimes even challenge me to fight. I was teased cruelly as a kid. When I was in junior high school, I realized something else that helped me cope. Most teasing came from one of two places—people who were either jealous or ignorant (愚昧). I couldn’t change the way they were, but I could change the way I felt. I was not going to feel bad because of their ignorance or jealousy. It wasn’t worth it. Realizing this didn’t stop them, or change the fact that these comments hurt. It did, however, give me a way to understand these people and deal with their treatment in a way that was okay for me.

These things still happen today. It will probably happen the rest of my life. I will always be 7 feet, 6 inches (2.29 meters) tall. I wouldn’t change that for anything. People will always look because it is not every day that you see someone that tall. I learned that at a young age and I now try to teach my own children that they are unique and they matter. That is the message I give to you. Regardless of your race, religion, background, or circumstances ... Being different is okay.

When Duke University refused to accept Siobhan O’Dell, 17, by sending her a rejection letter, she refused to take it quietly.

The teenager, from North Carolina, had applied to the famous college in her home state, but in March she was sent a letter telling her she had failed. Mirroring the standard format of college rejection letters, she wrote back:“Dear Duke University, thank you for the rejection letter of March 26, 2015. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me admission into the fall 2015 freshman class at Duke.”

Her conclusion reads: "Therefore I will be attending Duke University’s 2015 freshmen class. I look forward to seeing you then."

Speaking to a newspaper about the letter, Siobhan said: “They sent me a typical college rejection letter saying this year they had an outstanding pool of applicants... blah, blah, blah. It made me realize how much power universities have over students. High School graduates labor over applications, stress over waiting, and sometimes cry over the answer. Then that’s it.”

“The college has all the power. But what if that wasn’t it? What if we got to treat the college like they treated us? I wanted to give them a taste of their own medicine.”

Officials at Duke were unmoved by the teenager’s courage and obvious intelligence. Energy drinks can cause heart problems in healthy teenagers, scientists fear. Researchers are urging doctors, parents and teachers to monitor children’s drinking more closely because marketing them as relieving tiredness and providing physical and mental power ignores major concerns.

Dr Fabian Sanchis-Gomar, of Octubre Hospital, Madrid, and his colleagues said the drinks that have gained popularity among 10 to 19-year-olds can trigger sudden heart attacks in young, apparently healthy people.

Previous experiments has shown energy drinks high in caffeine (咖啡因) change the way the heart beats and could increase the risk of potentially deadly heart rhythm problems. In healthy adults who consumed the drinks, the left ventricle—which pumps blood around the body—was contracting harder, and still doing so an hour later.

Energy drinks often contain high amounts of labeled caffeine but can also contain “masked” caffeine in the form of guarana, for example, which comes from a Brazilian plant and is identical to caffeine found in coffee beans.Although caffeine is widely used and generally regarded as safe, serious harmful effects have been reported, especially when consumed in larger amount, said the researchers.

“It is important for physicians to understand the lack of regulation in caffeine content and other ingredients of these high energy drinks and their harms. And parents and children should be educated about the risks and the potential development of anxiety and fears coming with drinking large amounts of energy drinks.”

Dr Sanchis-Gomar’s team’s advice was that one can (250 mL) of an energy drink a day is safe for most healthy adolescents, but consumption before or during sports practice should be avoided.
