Interview

So what have they taught you at college about interviews? Some courses get to town on it, others do very little. Y ou may get conflicting advice. Only one thing is certain: the key to success is preparation.

There follow some useful suggestions from a teacher training course co-ordinator, a head of department and a head-teacher. As they appear to be in complete harmony with one another despite never having met, we may take their advice seriously.

Oxford Brookes University's approach to the business of application and interview focuses on research and rehearsal. Training course co-ordinator Brenda Stevens speaks of the value of getting students "to deconstruct the advertisement, see what they can offer to that school, and that situation, and then write the letter, do their CVs and criticize each other's." Finally, they role-play interviewer and interviewee.

This is sterling stuff, and Brookes students spend a couple of weeks on it. "The better prepared students won't be thrown by nerves on the day," says Ms Stevens. "They'll have their strategies and questions worked out." She also says, a trifle disconcertingly (令人困惑的), “the better the student, the worse the interviewee.” She believes the most capable students are less able to put themselves forward. Even if this were true, says Ms Stevens, you must still make your own case.

Beware of informality, she advises. One aspirant (有抱负的) teacher, now a head of department at a smart secondary school, failed his first job interview because he took his jacket off while waiting for his appointment. It was hot and everyone in the staff-room was in shirtsleeves but at the end of the day they criticized his casual attitude, which they had deduced from the fact that he took his jacket off in the staff-room, even though he put it back on for the interview.

Incidentally, men really do have to wear a suit to the interview and women really cannot wear jeans, even if men never wear the suit again and women teach most days in jeans. Panels respond instantly to these indicators. But beware: It will not please them any better if you are too smart.

Find out about the people who will talk to you. In the early meetings they are likely to be heads of departments or heads of year. Often they may be concerned with pastoral matters. It makes sense to know their priorities and let them hear the things about you that they want to hear.

During preliminary meetings you may be seen in groups with two or three other applicants and you must demonstrate that you know your stuff without putting your companions down. The interviewers will be watching how you work with a team.

But remember the warning about informality: However friendly and co-operative the other participants are, do not give way to the idea that you are there just to be friends.

Routine questions can be rehearsed, but "don't go on too long," advises the department head. They may well ask: "What have been your worst/best moments when teaching?", or want you to "talk about some good teaching you have done". The experts agree you should recognize your weaknesses and offer a strategy for overcoming them. "I know I've got to work on classroom management—I would hope for some help," perhaps. No one expects a new teacher to know it all, but they hope for an objective appraisal of capabilities. || Be warned against inexpert questioning. Y ou may be asked questions in such a way that it seems impossible to present your best features. Some questions may be plain silly, asked perhaps by people on the panel who are from outside the situation. Do not be thrown, have ways of

circumnavigating (绕过) it, and never, ever let them see that you think they have said something foolish.

Y ou will almost certainly be asked how you see the future and it is important to have a good answer prepared. Some people are put off by being asked what they expect to be doing in five or ten years' time. On your preliminary visit, says the department head, be sure to give them a bit of an interview of your own, to see the direction the department is going and what you could contribute to it.

The head-teacher offers his thoughts in a nine-point plan. Iron the application form! Then it stands out from everyone else's, which have been folded and battered in the post. It gives an initial impression which may get your application to the top of the pile. Ensure that your application is tailored to the particular school. Make the head feel you are writing directly to him or her. Put yourself at ease before you meet the interviewing panel: If you are nervous, you will talk too quickly. Before you enter the room remember that the people are human beings too; take away the mystique of their roles. Listen. There is a danger of not hearing accurately what is being said. Make eye contact with the speakers, and with everyone in the room. Allow your warmth and humanity to be seen. A sense of humor is very important.

Have a portfolio (公事包) of your work that can link theory to practice. Many schools want you to show work. For a primary appointment, give examples from the range of the curriculum, not just art. (For this reason, taking pictures on your teaching practice is important.) Prepare yourself in case you are asked to give a talk. Have prompt cards ready, and don't waffle (胡乱地说).

Y our speech must be clear and articulate, with correct grammar. This is important: They want to hear you and they want to hear how well you can communicate with children. Believe in yourself and have confidence.

Some of the people asking the questions don't know much about what you do. Be ready to help them.

Thus armed, you should have no difficulty at all. Good luck and keep your jacket on! Exercises

Y ou should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.

Passage One

Questions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage:

Each time you step into those faded old Jeans, you put on a piece of history. The world’s favorite trousers are now over a hundred years old, and here’s how they started out.

The first Jeans were made in 1850, in the California gold rush. A man named Levi Strauss realized that the gold-diggers’normal trousers weren’t strong enough for the work they had to do and were wearing out quickly. Strauss had some strong canvas, which he was going to make into tents and wagon covers to sell to the workers. Instead, he made some trousers out of it and these became the first Jeans. They were brown and called the waist-high overall.

The trousers sold well, and Strauss began looking around for ways of making them even tougher. He found a material that was better than canvas— a durable cotton that was manufactured only in the south of France. In a town called Nimes, the material was denim—the name coming from the French for from “Nimes”. Strauss ordered boat loads of this material and, to keep the color consistent, had it all dyed indigo blue. The trousers became known as blue denims or blue jeans (the word jean is thought to come from Genoa. Italian sailors from the port of Genoa wore trousers similar to jeans, on the big trading ships). In the early days cowboys, farmers, miners and timber Jacks—all people associated with hard work—wore jeans. But there were a few design problems with the early styles—as cowboys discovered to their cost. When they

crouched too close to the camp fire, the rivet (the metal button strengthening the jeans at the bottom of the fly) got too hot and became very uncomfortable. Levi didn’t take much notice of the cowboys complaints until the 1940s, when a company official crouched too close to a camp fire and experienced the problem first-hand. The crotch rivet was soon removed.

In the fifties and sixties, jeans represented rebellion. Film stars like James Dean, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe wore them, as did pop stars like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Fashions changed in the seventies and jeans became flared—tight at the hip and wide at the bottom. They were very, very tight—if you could get the zip up while standing up, they weren’t tight enough. Y ou had to lie down on the bed to do them up; for a really skin-tight fit, people would lie in a bath in their jeans and wait for them to shrink!

As the trousers became more and more successful, other jeans manufacturers started up—such as Wrengler, Pepe and Lee.

But jeans have had their opponents, in some countries—such as the old Soviet Union—jeans became a prized status symbol of the West. They suggested that a Soviet citizen had either traveled abroad or had contacts in the West. So the authorities discouraged the wearing of jeans. And in Japan, a consumers’association adamantly refused to sell one manufacturer’s fashionable ripped jeans because it felt these were interior and defective product!

Passage T wo

Questions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage:

While drunken driving may be on the decline, traffic safety experts remain baffled over how to

cope with another alcohol related hazard: drunken pedestrians. Pedestrians struck and killed by cars often are extremely drunk. In fact, they are intoxicated more frequently—and with higher blood alcohol levels—than drunken drivers who are killed in accidents. V arious studies have shown forty percent of adult pedestrians involved in fatal crashes have a blood alcohol level of at least 0.10—which by law in most states signifies intoxication—compared to only 25 percent of drivers in deadly accidents, according to recent federal data. Some types of pedestrian accidents have been declining nationally, especially those involving children, but the number of adult pedestrians who are drunk when killed in traffic has remained relatively steady at 2,500 a year. The total number of pedestrians killed annually in U.S. traffic accidents is at least 7,000 or one of every seven highway fatalities.

“We’re dealing here, we think, with a very severe drinking problem that leads to a severe highway safety problem,”said Richard Blomberg, president of Dunlap and Associates Inc. in Norwalk, Conn.

Blomberg, whose consulting company found a very high rate of alcohol involvement in a controlled study of pedestrian accidents in New Orleans, was among several researchers who spoke on the topic at the annual meeting of the Research Council’s Transportation Research Board (TRB) in Washington in January. Pedestrian accidents have not received enough attention in the past, according to Kay Colpitts, who chairs the board’s committee on pedestrians. Few methods exist to monitor walking habits, she said, and researchers have been mystified about how to prevent mishaps.

Studies have revealed some of the causes, which range from a lack of adult supervision for many children involved in accidents to long delays in traffic signals that may encourage jaywalking, speakers said at the meeting. The most challenging problem, however, is alcohol. Some researchers suspect that part of the problem, ironically, may be former drunken drivers whose licenses were suspended or revoked and who now are walking. Other researchers, emphasizing the larger societal problem of alcohol abuse in general, say many drunken pedestrians, are impoverished alcoholics who often face lonely deaths—and not only on highways.

62. The title of the passage would be_________.

A. Traffic Safety

B. Drunken Drivers

C. Drunken Pedestrian Accidents

D. A Severe Highway Safety Problem

63. What is the most serious problem among the causes of walkers’ accidents?

A. Long delays in traffic signals that may make people cross streets without paying attention

to traffic roles.

B. Alcohol.

C.A lack of adult keeping eyes on many children involved in accidents.

D. Dormer drunken drivers whose licenses are not allowed to use for a time.

64. According to recent federal data, drunken drivers in deadly accidents ________.

A. are 15 percent less than drunken adult walkers

B. are 2,500 a year

C. are at least 7,000 in U.S. traffic accidents

D. make up one seventh of highway fatalities

65. It can be inferred from the passage that pedestrian accidents have remained relatively high

because________.

A. walk accidents have not received enough attention in the past

B. few methods exist to confine walking habits

C. researchers find it difficult to work out ways to prevent unlucky accidents

D. all of the above

66. The passage was most probably written by a specialist in_________.

A. town planning

B. social history

C. traffic system

D. traffic safety
