American kids are taking more tests than ever before, and they’re stressed out. Is help on the way? Just the sight of a test booklet makes some kids sweat. For others, it is a blank answer sheet. Then there are the dreaded words, “Take out your Number 2 pencil.” All these fill 10-year-old Chelsea Logo with fear. “I start to tap my pencil on the desk,” says the fifth grader from Toluca Lake Elementary, near Los Angeles, California. “Then I feel the butterflies in my stomach.”

Chelsea is not alone. In a recent survey by https://www.docsj.com/doc/325831886.html,, more than 70% of kids ages 9 to 13 said they worry about tests. It’s no wonder. Across the United States, public schools give more than 250 million standardized tests each year.

Why do kids have to take so many tests? The No Child Left Behind(NCLB) law requires that students in grades 3 through 8 be tested each year. The law’s goal is for all students to be at grade level by 2014. Students must pass the tests and meet other requirements or their schools may be shut down.

US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan wants to change NCLB. But that doesn’t mean he favors getting rid of tests. Duncan believes tests should be used mainly to evaluate kids’ strengths and weaknesses. Tests, Duncan says, should not be used to punish kids or their schools for failure. “The goal is to focus on great teaching and learning,” Duncan said.

Under NCLB, each state sets its own standards for students to meet. The result, Duncan says, is that states are making the tests easier. To fix this problem, 48 states are now working together to create common standards. “I want to set a high bar for kids,” Duncan says, “so they’ll be in great shape to achieve their dreams.”

Like them or not, tests are here to stay. So how can you handle test nerves? Schools are teaching students to relax through deep breathing and stretching. In Oakland, California, Principal Zarina Ahmad of Piedmont Avenue Elementary leads her students in a cheer to get them excited about learning.

“Kids are under high pressure,” says Ahmad. “There has to be time for kids to be kids. Still, we need tests to help us assess what students have yet to learn.”

56. According to the passage, the NCLB law ______.

A. is focusing on teaching methods in schools

B. is requiring schools to make the tests more difficult

C. is trying to make schools be responsible for students

D. aims to evaluate kids’ strengths and weaknesses by means of tests

57. We can learn from the passage that Arne Duncan ______.

A. is strongly against tests

B. suggests closing some schools

C. is concerned about students’ development

D. suggests each state set its own standard

58. We can learn from the last two paragraphs that ______.

A. it’s impossible to get rid of tests

B. schools have no good way to deal with students’ stress

C. tests help assess what students have to learn

D. schools are aware of students; stress caused by tests

Companies have been tracking our online behavior for almost as long as there’s been an Internet, often using our online footsteps whenever we search, browse or buy online. By monitoring the browsing and buying behavior of consumers who visit their websites, stores are able to better target online and e-mail promotions to what consumers are most likely to buy.

Tracking technology has advanced so much that almost all our web habits can be monitored. There are a large number of privacy concerns, and several privacy and consumer groups are urging Congress to enact laws on what data can and can’t be collected and for h ow long.

A survey of 1,000 consumers released last month by professors from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California-Berkeley found almost 70% were opposed to online behavioral tracking by advertisers, and even more were opposed after they were told how the tracking was done.

But the National Retail Federation says that whatever concerns shoppers may have, they’re not avoiding online shopping because of them. In a survey of 2,600 consumers released last week, NRF asked for the primary reasons why shoppers might not be increasing their online spending this year. Privacy concerns and worries about “online tracking” were named by only 0.1% of shoppers, the smallest factor. The cost of shipping, on the other hand, was the biggest concern, with almost 23% citing it.

Critics argue that people aren’t more worried because they don’t understand how sweeping the tracking can be, while industry officials argue those who worry often don’t recognize the benefits.

Victoria Thornton of Dayton, Ohio, s ays she appreciates getting ads based on what she’s searched for online, but she is concerned about “personal information being stored and rerouted.” Her mother feels even more strongly, she says, “The thought of something documenting and then anticipating(预期) my interests upsets me.”

Natoli, who has an eBay store, isn’t worried. She likes it when Ann Taylor and Victoria’s Secret suggest other things she might like to buy and has bought more from both stores. And the targeted promotions she gets from booksellers Barnes & Noble and Borders really can resonate(引起反响). She says one of them recently sent her an e-mail saying, “What’s the matter? Y ou don’t like books anymore?” It included an offer for $20 off her next purchase.

“So of course, I had to order,” she says, laughing.

59. We can learn from the two surveys that ______.

A. most consumers disliked being tracked by advertisers

B. few advertisers knew how online tracking was done

C. online spending has increased by 0.1% this year

D. the cost of shipping has dropped by 23% this year

60. The underlined word “them” in paragraph 4 refers to ______.

A. professors

B. advertisers

C. concerns

D. shoppers

61. It can be inferred from the passage that “An Taylor” is ______.

A. an online store

B. a friend of Nat oli’s

C. a bookseller

D. an advertiser

62. What is the subject discussed in the passage?

A. Online searching habits.

B. Online behavioral tracking.

C. The future of online stores.

D. Advantages of online advertising.

C

It spins. It grows. It’s a huge, floating “garbage patch”, sometimes referred to as the “eighth continent”.

Located in the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii and measuring roughly twice the size of Texas, this strange mass is home to hundreds of species of sea life and is constantly expanding. Without an official title, it is known as “The Great Pacific Garbage patch”. The island consists almost entirely of man-made trash. It currently weighs approximately 3.5 million tons, 80 percent of which is plastic.

The air move ment is further trapping the garbage. “With the winds blowing in, it’s the perfect environment for trapping,” according to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle.

The garbage is doing what could be irreparable(不可弥补的) harm to sea life, the water it’s in, and eventually humans.

Though plastic can break down into smaller and smaller pieces over time, its original molecular composition won’t change. The result is a great amount of fine plastic sand that looks like f ood. Unfortunately, that cannot be digested, so sea birds or fish can eventually starve to death with a stomach full of plastic, for the plastic sand in a creature’s body contains poisonous chemicals.

According to Chris Parry of the California Coastal Commission, regrettably little can be done about the patch. “Cleaning it up isn’t an option…it’s just going to get bigger as our dependence on plastics continues,” said Parry. “The long-term solution is to decrease plastic production at home and change our consumption habits.”

Cleaning up the patch will likely cost billions of dollars and, as a matter of fact, be more difficult than vacuuming(用真空吸尘器清扫) every inch of the United States. So far, no country has come up with a solution, possibly because no nation wishes to claim responsibility.

63. Which of the following is TRUE about the “eighth continent”?

A. It’s a floating home to lots of wildlife.

B. Eighty percent of it is covered with garbage.

C. It’s an island rising from the bottom of the Pacific.

D. It’s smaller than California but larger than Hawaii.

64. According to paragraph 5, sea birds on the garbage patch may die because ______.

A. the plastic in their body is poisonous

B. they are hunted by humans

C. they drink water polluted by plastic

D. they can’t find food

65. To solve the problem, Chris Parry suggests that we ______.

A. break down plastic

B. use something else in place of plastic

C. clean up the patch

D. call for all the nations to claim responsibility

66. We can learn from the passage that ______.

A. the garbage patch causes no harm to humans currently

B. no effective measures have been taken to get rid of the garbage patch

C. the garbage patch stays the same size in the past several years

D. dealing with the garbage patch is virtually easy

D

Comrades, I don’t think I shall be with you for many months longer, and before I die, I feel it my duty to pass on to you such wisdom as I have acquired. I have had a long life, I have had much time for thought as I lay alone in my stall(牲畜棚), and I think I may say I understand the nature of life on this earth as well as any animal now living. It is about this that I wish to speak to you.

What is the nature of this life of ours? Let us face it: our lives are miserable, laborious, and short. We are born, we are given just so much food as will keep the breath in our bodies, and those of us who are capable of it are forced to work to the last atom of our strength; and the very instant that our usefulness has come to an end we are killed with cruelty. No animal in England knows the meaning of happiness after he is a year old. No animal in England is free.

But is this simply part of the order of nature? Is it because this land of ours is so poor? No, comrades, a thousand times no! The soil of England is rich, its climate is good, and it is capable of affording food in abundance to an enormously greater number of animals. This single farm of ours would support a dozen horses, twenty cows, hundreds of sheep --- and all of them living in a comfort and a dignity that are now almost beyond our imagination. Why then do we continue in this miserable condition? That’s because nearly the whole of the produce of our labour is stolen from us by human beings. There, comrades, is the answer to all our problems it is summed up in a single word --- man. Man is the only real enemy we have. Remove man from the scene, and the root cause of hunger and overwork is abolished for ever.

Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, and he cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits. He sets them to work, he gives back to them the bare minimum that will prevent them from starving, and the rest he keeps for himself. Y ou cows that I see before me, how many thousands of gallons of milk have you given during this last year? And what has happened to that milk which should have been breeding up calves? Every drop of it has gone down the throats of our enemies. And you hens, how many eggs have you laid in this last year, and how many of those eggs ever hatched into chickens?

The rest have all gone to the market to bring in money for Jones and his men. And you, Clover, where are those four baby horses you bore, who should have been the support and pleasure of your old age? Each was sold at a year old --- you will never see one of them again.

And even the miserable lives we lead are not allowed to reach their natural span. For myself I am one of the lucky ones. I am twelve years old and have had over four hundred children. Such is the natural life of a pig. But no animal escapes the cruel life in the end.

Only get rid of man, and the produce of our labour would be our own. Almost overnight we could become rich and free.

67. According to the speech, the life an animal leads is that of ______.

A. comfort and happiness

B. challenge and adventure

C. fantasy and dream

D. misery and slavery

68. The animal that made the speech was a ______.

A. pig

B. horse

C. cow

D. cock

69. Which of the following is NOT true about the speaker?

A. The speaker is wise and learned.

B. Jones is the owner of the speaker.

C. The speaker can avoid being killed by man.

D. No animal in England has access to freedom.

70. The purpose of the speech is to ______.

A. seek to improve relations between the animals

B. abolish the order of nature

C. call on animals to fight for the overthrow of the human race

D. pass on to animals the knowledge of food producing

Shared habits of happy people

Happy people all share happy habits. It’s as simple as that. The happiest people I know share these obvious habits. If you’re looking to expand your general happiness, you may consider adopting these in your o wn life.

People may take an active role in their local city council, join a social club supporting causes they believe in, or find passion in their careers. In each case, the physiological outcome is the same. They engage in something they strongly believe in. This engagement brings happiness and meaning into their lives.

A happy life is a life shared with friends and family. The stronger the personal relationships are and the higher the frequency of interaction is, the happier a person will be.

Quite often people concentrate too much on negative outcomes and leave no time to reflect positively on their successes. It’s natural for a person to want to correct undesirable circumstances and focus closely on doing so, but it is important to reflect mindfully on the good while striving diligently to correct the bad. A continuous general awareness of your daily successes can have a noticeably positive effect on your overall emotional happiness.

The power of endings is quite remarkable. The end of any experience has a great impact on a person’s overall perception(看法) of the experience as a whole. Think about reading a well-written novel. Now imagine the ending is really poor. Even if the story was appealing until the ending, would you still be happy recommending the novel to a friend? People always remember the ending. If the ending is happy, the

experience creates happiness. Always tie loose ends, leave things on a good note, and create happy endings in your life whenever possible.

Everyone possesses unique personal strengths. We all have different talents and skill sets. Emotional happiness comes naturally to those who use their strengths to get things done. The state of completion always creates a sense of achievement. If the achievement is based on your own personal ability to get the job done, the physiological rewards are priceless.

The best things in life are free. They come in the form of simple pleasures and they appear right in front of you at previous locations and arbitrary times. They are governed by Mother Nature and situational circumstances and captured by mindful awareness. It’s all about taking a moment to notice the orange and pink sunset reflecting off the pond water as you hold hands with someone you love. Noticing these moments and taking part in them regularly will bring unplanned bursts of happiness into your life.

One possible version:

There are so many Apple fans in China, and it seems a fashion. As is shown in the picture, when iPad2 was first released, thousands of them crowded to get one.

However, iPad2, which costs thousands of dollars, is nothing but a tool for surfing the Internet and entertaining. Apple fans around me use iPad2 to play games only. They have spent so much money on such a device to idle away their time. It surely isn’t worth the money.

There are many reports about young people, especially university students, who take great efforts, and even lifelong costs, to obtain an Apple product of their own as a fashion. I’m not against people going aft er fashions. But we should be aware whether the fashion is of any value, or worth our efforts and even sufferings. What’s more, fashions sometimes change so quickly that immediately we catch them, we are left behind.

As a young man, I believe it makes far more sense to find pleasure in pursuing something meaningful.

advice“建议,忠告”;question“问题,询问”;offer“提议,好意”;idea“主意,想法”。 22.【答案】B 【解析】分析句子成分可知此句为定语从句,各先行词people代入定语从句后为:people urgently needed clean water,medicine and shelter to survive,可知先行词在从句中作主语,所以排除C项;what不能引导定语从句,故排除D项;因为先行词为“人”,所以排除A项。 这句话和There is little doubt一致,little“几乎没有”是否定词,遵循前否后肯的原则,反意问句用is there?故选A。 26.【答案】D 【解析】A项run off with表示“与某人私奔,偷走”;B项run up against表示“遭遇(困难)”;C项run out of表示“用完,耗尽”;D项run away with表示“躲开,躲避,回避(责任等)”;根据句意,D项与题意相符。

D篇的句子猜题中"a book must be the ax for the frozen sea inside us", 运用了明喻和暗喻的写作手法等,以致学生感觉难度大、耗时多。
