I. Introduction to the book, “Daddy-Long-Legs:”

Written by Jean Webster in 1912, it tells the story of an orphan by the name of Jerusha Abbot. She spends her entire young life in an orphanage and works there in exchange of her “free” high school education until the day she is finally sent out to college by a generous trustee, whose name is kept unknown. Jerusha addresses him as “Laddy-Long-Legs” and is required to write him letters regularly so as to keep the trustee updated about her college studies and life.

II. Introduction of the author:

Alice Jane Chandler Webster, whose pen name is Jean, was born in New York in 1876 and died of childbirth fever at the age of 40 in 1916. Her mother was niece of Mark Twain, and her father ran a publishing business. Her education at schools inspired her to write fictional novels. One the most famous book is Daddy-Long-Legs, which receives popularity because of her witty style.

(D)Activities after the reading:

I. Letter Writing

(1) Write something that is familiar to you in your school life. Pretend that you are writing a letter to your pen pal in a foreign country. Remember to write him/her a letter every week so that you can tell him/her as much as possible.

(2) When writing the letter, pretend that she/he has written to you as well and you answer her/his letter. He/She may miss some letters and didn’t write back because of the mail delivery problem or some delay from unpredictable situations like typhoons. And you can tell him/her what your concern is when you didn’t receive her/his letters.

(3) Draw something cute or silly on your letter so that you can show your pen pal the

details of your life.

(4) (Options) Exchange your letters with your classmates and ask her/him to write back.

II. Writing a letter for Jerusha to accept Master Jervie’s proposal for marriage. (1)In pairs, write a letter for Jerusha to accept Master Jervie, that is,

Jerusha is the oldest orphan in the JOHN GRIER HOME. She has to do so much works to maintain her study in high school. But one day, her outstanding article draws attention of an orphanagetrustee. The rich man named himself John Smithdesires Jerusha can become a writerand promise that he will send her to college and afford her tuition and allowance. His only requirement is thatshe to write a letter to him once a month without any answer. Jerushaenters the college and starts to write letters to the t rustee. As she hasn’t seen him and only know he is very tall and has long legs, she calls him daddy long legs in the letters. She shares her college life and may thoughts with daddy long legs. Obviously, she treats him as her family. Though the daddy-long-legs never reply her letters, he is very concerned about her. Besides giving her money, he also sends her new dresses for the Christmas and invites her to his farm for summer holidays. Jerusha really appreciates him and values the opportunity to study in college. She works very hard and reads lots of books to improve her literary attainments. She is very positive to take part in many activities and try her best to blend into her classmates.She really enjoys her college life. One day, Jerusa meets her classmate’s uncle Master Jewie, who comes from a very rich family.They take part in same parties several times and spend summer holiday in the same farm.
